Q: How do I recycled mixed recyclables like a glass jar with a metal lid?
A: Separate the lid from the jar. Make sure the jar is clean, dry and empty. Put the lid in soup can if possible to ensure that gets recycled (lids are too small to be recycled on their own).
Q: Can I recycle the glass from a candle? If so, does all the wax need to be cleaned out?
A: Cleaning glass candle containers is really hard, we have tried and tried. If you can't get the glass completely clean, please DO NOT recycle it.
Q: Can I put paper/cardboard in my curbside compost/Green Organics container?
A: No, we prefer the paper and cardboard in the recycling container. The Green Organics container is strictly for yard waste currently.
Q: Can I recycle my kids' broken toys?
A: Usually you cannot. Oftentimes toys are made of combinations of different plastics and materials, making it difficult or impossible to recycle. If you'd like a more detailed answer, email us a photo of the toy you are wanting to recycle.
Q: Is the Zero Waste team still giving recycling presentations?
A: The Zero Waste team is exploring all options for creative and responsible ways to engage with the public. If you are a teacher or someone who would like to receive a presentation, please reach out to [e-mail] and we'd be more than happy to figure something out!
Q: Are plastic straws recyclable?
A: No, no kinds of straws are recyclable?
Q: Is it true that your recycling equipment has a hard time identifying black plastic?
A: Yes, this is true. However, it does not mean black plastic isn't recyclable. Some is, some isn't. For example, a black styrofoam takeout container is not recyclable in Phoenix. For a full list of what is accepted in Phoenix, visit phoenix.gov/recycle.
