Marching in the Columbus Day Parade in NYC

- Join Rossella Rago, Patrick O'Boyle and John M. Viola, co-hosts of "The Italian American Podcast", as they march their way down Manhattan's Fifth Avenue in New York City's Annual Columbus Day Parade!
In this episode, they'll examine the history of Columbus Day, from its roots as a day free from the fingerprints of America’s recently vanquished British forbearers, to its eventual role as the celebration of Italian American pride that it has become. And, they'll explore why a holiday that was celebrated for centuries without controversy has, in recent years, become a hot-button issue that hits at the heart of Italian identity in America. As some communities opt to re-examine the legacy of the holiday’s namesake navigator, Italian Americans across the nation find themselves on both sides of a conversation about a figure clouded in historical mystery… and a holiday that is, for many, more about a chance to celebrate the the accomplishments of the 25 million Americans of Italian descent.
"Greetings From Italian America " is presented as a joint project of The Italian American Podcast and The Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA), one of the nation's most important organizations for Americans of Italian descent.
Each month, we'll explore the people, places, and peculiarities of the Italian side of America, bringing the heart of the Italian American experience to 25 million Italian Americans, and to the wider world... delivering history, discussion, examination, and connections with smarts, heart, and a lot of laughs!

Greetings to all Italians 🇮🇹🇸🇦
Bravo! Great piece on why we need to protect this holiday.
Proud to be Italian-American!🇮🇹🇺🇸💪
I am proud to be Sicilian and Italian. Grazie Benjamin Harrison who must have had Italian blood.
Proud to be Italian, and much love to my Italian brothers and sisters! Viva Italia 🇮🇹🇮🇹
GRAZIE!
George Washington Thomas Jefferson and most of the founders of America owned slaves ; so what do you do wipe out their historical memory and accomplishments? This controversy over Columbus Day in your country is political correctness gone mad! It is always a mistake to judge history from a modern perspective! Viva l’ Italia!
You HAVE to be from Southern Italy....you guys just loooove Columbus even though he is not and never will be one of your people....let's put the BS aside....Columbus wouldn't have anything in common with you if he was alive today...He was Northern Italian, Genoese by birth and had NOTHING TO DO with you Southern Italians. Worship Al Capone or John Gotti...your people...Viva LEGA NORD!

Archimede , Pirandello, Antonello Da Messina ecc....
Please lets not be ashamed of who we are and of colombus because some loons want to attack us. Dont be scared
Great story and delivery. Columbus Day needs to be preserved for all the reasons that you have beautifully described. Great to see so many happy faces enjoying life!
Grazie! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful job! Amazing!
We are a Great People
we sure are!
Sì
Great job!!!!
We were here at the beginning and we will be here forever! Lunga vita agli Italiani!
Thanks for watching!
@Trinity M Lies propogated by, among others, the Ku Klux Klan who like you were also anti-Italian. And you can't tell me they had the interests of native Americans in mind. The "biological warfare, rape, and violence" as you phrase it in order to "wipe out tribes and put them in bondage" has been debunked time and time again. You're a little late to the party Trinity. Pick up a book written in the last 10 years to learn the true story of Columbus' voyages. His own diaries and diaries by his contemporaries (some of whom were not exactly his friends) disprove all of those outdated lies. Stop allowing popular media narratives to shape your beliefs, and stop being a mouthpiece for regurgitating their lies.
Bellissimo! Keep the spirit and the celebration, Italians! Defend your culture and heritage! If other groups can do it, we can also. Much of what he is accused of is not true. And one of our biggest enemies is the Democratic Party.
Those who are woke are our enemies.
Move over for George Floyd day and transvestite flags. Unbelievable
Well done
What a great day that was!
What a good video! Informative!
Beautiful
Italians are great 😊
Perfect explanation
I don’t think anyone would be opposed to an Italian American Heritage Day because that’s what Columbus Day already is and that’s worth celebrating. The only controversy is about celebrating the man himself and his legacy, which isn’t important by comparison.
There are many who agree with that stance! Thanks for watching and engaging this important issue!
Under it all there is anti Italian racism. Way could not the day be called Amerigo Vespucci? The Anglos wanted to get rid of a holiday for us. Is October Italian Heritage Month? It is also Hispanic Heritage Month. With the way things are going it probably is also Trans Drag Queen Month.
@@lucianomezzetta4332 Under it all is Italian American assimilation, where now I don’t think most of us even know why our relatives came to the US and left Italy, much less why one of the big reasons was because we got the short end of the stick of Italian unification. Now we’re just “white Italian Americans”, instead of Napolitans or Genovese.
But that obscures the recent history of why even our recent ancestors would laugh at the idea that, say, a common Calabrese or Sicilian should be honoring an elite Genovese, like Columbus. Nationalism in both the US and Italy makes us oblivious to how why Southern Italy very much had a beef with the elite in the north for generations.
