Great review. We rented one for a weekend to get a true feel for ownership as I was hyped on this and wanted to sell my spouse on it...but we realized we really needed power seats and mirrors tied to profiles so they'd adjust automatically every time we get in. I know that's not a deal breaker for everyone but we're a 2-driver 1-car household and are always changing who's driving so both of us needing to adjust all the seat positionings each time we got in after the other person was driving made us feel like we were in an '04 Camry and got annoying after just 2 days. The Mach-E GT was just as fun to drive and the power memory seats worked perfectly, plus had a frunk which we use regularly and much more range, so we went with that. The fun driving of the Hyundai couldnt overcome some of the lack of practicality for our needs. If Hyundai added this in a future model year we'd come back to consider it.
Ha! I actually prefer the manual seats of our Chevy Volt since my wife is so petite, it would take time for the seat to motor into place. With the manual version it's super fast.
2025 Kia EV6 GT will share the same 641 hp motor, battery, fake transmission, brakes and suspension with Ioniq 5N. But, it will be tuned as a GT car, not as a track weapon. It will have more convenience features such as power seats, memory seats, power moonroof and will be tuned with softer suspension setting. So, if you want more wife-friendly version of Ioniq 5N, EV6 GT could be a good choice.

I wonder if you could stretch out the range a bit with a nice set of Hankook's EV tires? It's been a few months since Tom filmed this, I wonder what he ended up getting?
@ CPO Taycan 4S would be the nicest looking car in the neighborhood. The 5N would blend in with all the other Ioniq 5s in Seattle. Personally, I’d fret about getting door dings or hitting a pothole in the Porsche and would have to spring for all the aftersales upcharges that Porsche offers.
I think a much better choice with the 3 performance. Much cheaper, faster, WAY longer range, compatible with the super charger network. I have a Y LR and love it. Enjoy!
I dont know Tom, If you get an N you may be having so much fun you may stop producing videos 😊 Another excellent video as always. Wondering about the sound system? Happy and healthy 2025.
Hi Tom, let me take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025. Thanks for your reviews and hopefully you get your 200k followers. Cheers from a nice and warm New Zealand Ton.
Thanks for this one Tom, another interesting choice. When you reviewed features, it occurred to me that at some point, I would love a deep dive on V2L systems and who does it best. We're thinking V2L will be a must-have in our next. We'd use it especially for our off- grid cabin, on the list with max cargo room, an ability to drive down 300m of trail, and good snow ability. So far all i can think of is R1T and maybe the Taycan Cross, neither of which i can afford.
Have you considered a used F-150 Lightning? The XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trims can be configured with a 9.6KW V2L. I'm seeing 1-owner trucks selling between $40-45K.
@joemcdonough7509 Thanks, I have, and there are a few around here. I'm waiting for something smaller, but they're on the right track. Next generation, if there are next generations, should start to really hit the sweet spot. I'm thinking of an electric wagon from Volvo / Polestar with AWD and clearance, and V2L, would be my sweet spot for size and ability.
I could replace my Polestar 2 Performance with this. My heart wants it, but it has the same limited range, which is the primary real world issue I have with my current car.
You mean, 0.3s MORE not less with simulated shifts? In any case, paddles and simulated engine noise are immediate turn-offs. Also, why anyone would need 600 hp? The Golf Mk1/Mk2 design language is nice though.
If. only the 5N had slightly more of what the 5 Limited offers - head-up display, power seats (for sharing the car with another driver)... A mild grumble about "Driven" reviews - the videos are almost entirely on suburban or rural roads, except for the wild track scenes in this one. Many viewers drive in urban traffic, where "0 to 60" is an aspiration, or maybe a myth. It would be helpful to have a sense of how a vehicle feels in the conditions we face regularly.
I contacted Hyundai a couple days before posting this. The 5 N is built in South Korea and sticks with CCS for the foreseeable future. No word on when it makes the switch.
I am a big EV person. Hyundai/Kia have been off my list because of quality problems I have had with their products previously. Beyond that the range of the N just is not good enough. I get that it is performance but 220 where most EVs charge to 80% (176) of plus the winter reduction of range means this would be hard to live with. Mid $60k in our area. Fun toy but I could not justify the limitations as a primary car especially at that price.
Two of our friends have IONIQ 5s. Several recalls later, they couldn't get rid of them fast enough after the lease was over. You don't buy these EV cars. You lease them.
I've seen this happened in the motorcycle industry. Zero makes good performance EV motorcycles but they do not sell well. Enthusiast markets are mostly traditionalists whose ideas are not easily swayed.
Just what the average “boy racer needs” more speed, faster acceleration and the ability to do burnouts! We have a problem here in Nebraska with groups of young people gathering doing burnouts and attacking interlopers. Sheriff deputies helped mitigate the problem by arresting them and confiscating their cars. I’ll be looking for a good deal from the impound lot!
@@DrivenCarReviews Agree! I have no problem with a “track based car” I’ve owned three BMWs sedans, three BMW SUVs and four Porsches including a Carrera 4. By the way just saw an ad in today’s WSJ for the Ionic 5 N. It depicts the car in a thunderstorm as a kite. So Tom if you get one hold on to the string!😄
Wider and bigger tires, more downforce, wider wheelarches, higher weight (12% stiffer body, different suspension) and steering and I think the more powerful motors need more power
Great videos as always, Tom, but in my humble opinion life is already quite harsh so I prefer cars which give me extremely comfortable ride instead of harsh ride. So my eyes are set on EV/Plug-In Hybrids such as the Genesis GV70 or the possible GV80 Plug-in Hybrids. Regular Ioniq 5 is fine but I am not a fan of the look.
Itˋs faster than an Urus and has the same space inside. Golf R is much smaller. I own a Golf R and a 5N, the 5N is much more fun to drive and it’s faster.
@ The headroom in the Ioniq 5 N is much more than a Urus. Came close to buying a new N. Think I’ll look for a used one. Seems like they’re depreciate a good deal. What do you like best about yours?
@@WFO. What I like best is how the 5N rotates in bends, which I would never have thought possible with its weight. Then the subsequent outward acceleration with a primal force in which the rear breaks away in a playful but still controllable manner. The overall balance is insane. The shift mode feels better than in the Golf R (even if my statement sounds crazy) I can also take it to the Nordschleife and drive 2 laps in a row, which no other electric car can do. And the great thing is that at the touch of a button you have a quiet, comfortable family car in which everyone feels at home. If I were you, I would buy it used or lease it. I leased one through my company for 480€/month(~500$). Just go for a test drive
@ You should be an automotive journalist. That was an excellent description of the car. I’ll reach out to the GM of the local dealership about lease deals. Merry Christmas to you. I’ll follow up with what the prices are here in Northern Virginia.
@@WFO. 🤣 Others can do that better, I'm just a car enthusiast. I even forgot to emphasize the great steering wheel (10/10) and the very good bucket seats (9/10) I'm very curious to see what you come up with and what your impressions are. Please let me know. Merry Christmas
Actually, my wife is the one who talked ME into buying one. She knew that I was interested but didn't want to spend the money on one, but she goaded me into doing it. The nice part is that unlike the Focus RS that I traded in for it, it's a comfortable car for her to drive. Although even with all the toys turned off, she's still too nervous to drive it!
Right? It's amazingly docile for what it can do. Impressive machine. My wife (NOT a car person) drove it without knowing it's a high performance car and she liked it (I wanted her to experience a 5). Her only real complaint is she thought it looked "too sporty". She didn't even mind the seats.
We don’t have the option for Chinese EVs in the US thanks to import tariffs. I am curious, how do their reputations for reliability compare to cars from S Korea or Japan?
@ Because it has comparable performance, Is 10k+ cheaper, has better tech, vastly better charging network….etc Let’s talk vehicle specs, performance and cost and keep the Elon love or hate out of the equation…
@@DrivenCarReviews I have not driven the Hyundai, but have driven the current Y. I enjoyed driving the MYP more than my wife’s 2020 Macan S. I am personally waiting for the Juniper Y…
@@davidy932 I get it it, the YP is less expensive (especially since it's eligible for the fed tac credit). In my opinion the 5N offers a lot more for the enthusiast, even beyond the "shifts and sounds". For some, it's worth the extra cost. It can be adjusted every which way from Sunday (tech Tesla doesn't offer BTW), has traditional controls that don't smack of cost cutting and, if my experience with a M3P is any indication, a significantly better ride quality for everyday use. And the Hyundai (as popular as it is in Seattle) won't be seen 20 times on the way to Safeway. The SC network is opening up to everyone so there's that. Specs are specs and those don't tell the whole story. I see the YP as a good value but my opinion is the 5N is more soul satisfying.
I will never buy a Hyundai again. Nothing but trouble. We had a Sonata years ago. Junk. Our friends Hyundai Santa Fe's paint is slowly peeling off. We've seen quite a few that do this. No thanks.
I think this "car" (it's not an SUV since has less ground clearance than a 2025 bmw 540i xDrive) is overrated. Modern Chinese EV cars are faster, more technological and cheaper.
I love your car reviews. I always find them interesting, even if I'm not interested in the car. That said, this review? So sorry, but you just made me a disbeliever. This is a TERRIBLE car. It certainly has the power, yes, but unless you drive it in a straight line and hope that there are no bumps on the road, that power gets you nowhere. The suspension is terrible, I have seldom felt more unsafe in a car. Everything in it feels cheap. It's terrible. I don't know how you could even mention it in the same sentence as the absolutely excellent Porsche Taycan. Granted, they are not comparable when it comes to price, but even if you are looking for something cheaper than a Porsche, this would be a terrible choice. I drive more than 2000 kilometres through Europe with this car this year and I hated every single one of it. Even it's sister car from Kia is better. But please, if it's in your budget, get the Porsche. Or get the new electric Macan.
This is a great comment. Thanks for taking the time. I'm curious how much you went through the menu to tune the car and change its character. Also, what's your gold standard is in automobiles for comparison? Both Martin and I felt it was firm but certainly docile enough for everyday driving when everything was detuned. Even my non-car loving spouse had no issue with the ride quality. As I said, it does have more of a utilitarian cabin compared to the standard 5s but not sure I'd characterize it as cheap. I believe the driving dynamics are quite similar to the Taycan when everything is dialed in right. Bang for the buck (or Euro) it's a great driver's car. But for those with the cash, the Taycan is a lovely thing.
Seems like a cool car but range is terrible and EVs still feel like disposable consumables to me and i think resell values prove this. Will an EV last 10 years and 115k miles like my Honda Accord?
@jimmyh6601 you say that, but parts still need to be serviced. Motortrend has a long term EV and we're shocked by how much the service fee was. I forgot which EV they had, but moral here is just because you have an EV, doesn't mean running costs are 0
@@gladdy02 Depends on the brand. Some have "checks" at intervals just to give the dealers some business. For the Chevy Bolt I had, the first scheduled maintenance was a coolant change at 150K miles. But no O2 sensors to replace, rusted exhaust, oil changes, etc. But brake pads last much longer, and there will always be some suspension work if you live with bad roads. Otherwise an EV will last far longer than anyone will want to keep one before upgrading for the latest tech.
There are plenty of people with 100K + on their EVs. And yeah, they do require maintenance but the pack are holding up well. Durability and longevity shouldn't be an issue.
Or just like ICE vehicles, you could keep it 15 years and suck all the value out of it. Not everyone needs the "new shiny thing" every 3 years, which is how you get burned on any devaluing purchase.
$67K for 220 miles? 😂 Rather get a Model 3 Performance for $10K cheaper, 80 more miles and a faster 0-60. Plus the 3 has platinum plate underneath protecting the battery, if you run over anything. Hyundai doesn’t have it.
@@onehorsepowerand when you run over something, or scrap the bottom you’re looking at a battery replacement cost of $60K (Canadian). Even if the battery isn’t damaged. This story has been reported time and time again, because Hyundai doesn’t protect underneath with platinum plate like Tesla does.
We have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra with 90K miles that is still on its original brakes. Nothing but oil changes, new tires and wipers and a new battery in 14 years. We haven't even done a tune up.😂. I also have a 2020 Kia Optima SX, that hasn't even been taken back to the dealer once for anything. It's sad I couldn't use my 5 year bumper to bumper warranty for anything that expires in January. So far my experience has been light years ahead of the Acuras, Infiniti's and Toyotas I've owned.

I wonder if you could stretch out the range a bit with a nice set of Hankook's EV tires? It's been a few months since Tom filmed this, I wonder what he ended up getting?
Yeah, it was in the can for much longer than usual. But I have not pulled the trigger yet. Life keeps getting in the way.
@@anthonyc8499 I don't worry too much about my cars, even my expensive ELR. I will avoid obvious tight parking spots and such though.
Would love to buy one of these used in a year or two.
Do you have info if the Keichi Tsuchiya DK Edition 5N will be sold in North America ?
In the US? Doubtful.
Awesome car. Wanted one but bought a Highland 3P instead.
I think a much better choice with the 3 performance. Much cheaper, faster, WAY longer range, compatible with the super charger network. I have a Y LR and love it. Enjoy!
Yeah I need at least 300 mi range to get to my local ski resort but I really wanted the N 🤷♂️
If you don't care about the fake shifts, is a Kia EV6 GT a better buy?
As you know Lamborghini is working on 5N at HQ. For future ev Lamborghini.😊😊😊😮😮😮
I dont know Tom, If you get an N you may be having so much fun you may stop producing videos 😊
Another excellent video as always. Wondering about the sound system?
Happy and healthy 2025.
You know, that's a distinct possibility. I deserve some fun time. The Bose system was pretty good, better than usual.
Waiting for a revision with memory seats so it can be a shared car
Hi Tom, let me take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025. Thanks for your reviews and hopefully you get your 200k followers.
Cheers from a nice and warm New Zealand
Ton.
Merry Christmas to you as well! And thanks for the support.
A great idea but not my thing. I do different topics every once in a while and find those video get 0 views. Don't like wasting my time.
@DrivenCarReviews fair enough! I hate your answer but fair enough. :)
@@joemcdonough7509 Nope. I'm lukewarm on that vehicle for my lifestyle. Too large for Seattle driving.
Thank you for the great review! Do you know how much of the N tech is going to carry over to the 2025 EV6 GT
I suspect a lot, if not all of it. But that's just a guess, no details yet.
Great review of a great vehicle, looks like an awesome fun road trip car.
I thought the 2025s came native with the NACS charging ports?
I contacted Hyundai a couple days before posting this. The 5 N is built in South Korea and sticks with CCS for the foreseeable future. No word on when it makes the switch.
@@DrivenCarReviews Thanks! Strange because the 2025 Kia EV6 GT is advertised with NACS native, but its cousin not just yet.
@@rodulfol Yup. And it could change in a month or two. But for now Hyundai isn't saying anything.
Tom, love your vids. But that garage of yours is.......dank.
It's not a garage. It's the Bat Cave.
This is simply amazing for me, thank you
HUD available?
@@witsendcottage595 I have a HUD in my EV6 GT, which is similarly positioned in the lineup as the N. I would assume it also has one.
Pretty sure it's not available in NA.
Those wheels are beautiful! They almost look too thin, but I'll bet they are OK.
Hyndai and Kia needs to do more in every market how to keep cars on the road. And never try to trade or sell one...
i was missing your video. seemed like UA-cam didn't pushed the previous video in my feed. now i got 2 of them to watch. good Christmas bonus
Merry Christmas!
@@DrivenCarReviews and to you too. Have a good celebration Tom
Sit tight Tom. The 6N is just around the corner.
When I see a vehicle (EV or ICE) with fake engine sounds, I look in another direction.
And what do you see?
Just what the average “boy racer needs” more speed, faster acceleration and the ability to do burnouts! We have a problem here in Nebraska with groups of young people gathering doing burnouts and attacking interlopers. Sheriff deputies helped mitigate the problem by arresting them and confiscating their cars. I’ll be looking for a good deal from the impound lot!
Sounds like poor parenting to me.
@@DrivenCarReviews
Agree!
Fantastic car! But do you know why the 5N consumes much more (20-25%) electricity in economy mode than its "civil" version, plain Ioniq 5 AWD?
Wider and bigger tires, more downforce, wider wheelarches, higher weight (12% stiffer body, different suspension) and steering and I think the more powerful motors need more power
Great videos as always, Tom, but in my humble opinion life is already quite harsh so I prefer cars which give me extremely comfortable ride instead of harsh ride. So my eyes are set on EV/Plug-In Hybrids such as the Genesis GV70 or the possible GV80 Plug-in Hybrids. Regular Ioniq 5 is fine but I am not a fan of the look.
That's why there are different cars. I find the standard 5 too soft (Martin agreed). And yeah, the 5s design is polarizing. Viva la difference!
Golf R? More like a Urus.
The shift mode feels better than in the Golf R (even if my statement sounds crazy)
I can also take it to the Nordschleife and drive 2 laps in a row, which no other electric car can do.
I even forgot to emphasize the great steering wheel (10/10) and the very good bucket seats (9/10)
I'm very curious to see what you come up with and what your impressions are.
@@DrivenCarReviews Looks like a typical late 1970s - early 1980s Euro hatch. Some may say, Golf Mk1/Mk2. Others may say, Lancia Delta.
Everything is a crossover these days. 😒
@@rustlesee that's true, but this is the least crossover of so-called crossovers
Wait for the IONIQ 6 N rumored for this spring.
Here in most parts of Asia the S Korean cars are last choice for EVs as the Chinese cars are better and cheaper and more choices.
We don’t have the option for Chinese EVs in the US thanks to import tariffs. I am curious, how do their reputations for reliability compare to cars from S Korea or Japan?
Less than 200 miles real world rage? No thanks. Don’t care how fast it is…
What value? It's 45K 😂
buy a hummer ev suv is the best
Sounds like a fun car Tom. Couldn’t help but notice that there was no mention of Tesla, specifically the Model Y Performance….
Why mention it?
Personally, I don't think the Y is in the same league.
@ Because it has comparable performance, Is 10k+ cheaper, has better tech, vastly better charging network….etc
Let’s talk vehicle specs, performance and cost and keep the Elon love or hate out of the equation…
No thanks.
Is that one of your favorite cars? KEEP it. Not interested
Easily, far less to go wrong!
Just make sure you lease it.
Or just like ICE vehicles, you could keep it 15 years and suck all the value out of it. Not everyone needs the "new shiny thing" every 3 years, which is how you get burned on any devaluing purchase.
Politics aside, if one wanted a frugal EV option today, and a long road trip was on the menu, a CPO Tesla is really the only logical choice.
It's not.
$67K for 220 miles? 😂 Rather get a Model 3 Performance for $10K cheaper, 80 more miles and a faster 0-60. Plus the 3 has platinum plate underneath protecting the battery, if you run over anything. Hyundai doesn’t have it.
Model 3 is not a hatchback and is uglier inside. Also, its suspension is too harsh.
Be my guest. For the driver this car was intended for, a model 3 isn't really an alternative.
@@TinLeadHammernope. They fixed it with the updated Highlander model.

Can I just get notifications for the EXTRAORDINARILY RARE occasions when you review something OTHER than "a sports car" or "a sports car wannabe?" Geez, that is ALL you have been reviewing over most of the past year or two. Or three. Or four. Yes, you just exhibit dripping HATRED against SUV and crossover vehicles that provide comfortable rides, room for passengers and cargo, and ease of entry and exit for people with less than youthful mobility, but FOR ONCE IN YOUR CAREER, could you consider that MOST PEOPLE DON'T "PLAY" WITH CARS -- they use them for useful things, instead of PLAYING WITH TOY CARS. I'm screaming at you, because I'm so frustrated about this. No, no, no, no, no, no, I will NOT watch another Ioniq 5 N video!! Can we get a "Driven Car Reviews FOR GROWN UPS With Tom Voelk" channel?
I feel no need to defend myself but Mini Cooper, Mazda CX-50 and 3, Chevy Equinox EV, Toyota Camry, Kia Carnival and Sorento plus Hyundai Tucson Hybrid are all vehicles I've done in the last quarter. Hatred against SUVs? Nope. I've actually defended them as being far more practical than sedans and that I understand why they're more practical than sedans. My reviews are far more pragmatic than most. I'm not perfect but I'm totally about real world use. Merry Christmas Tom!
Actually if you look at the recent car reviews the overwhelming number have been everyday drivers. Including several SUVs. But you do you.
