    Some interesting things about the Round Goby-they're actually preyed upon by smallmouth bass and the Lake Erie Watersnake, which has been removed from the federally threatened and endangered species list, perhaps because about 90% of it's diet consists of gobies and they can make a comeback

      Just about all the fish in Lake Michigan have added gobies to their diet as well, other than king salmon which still prefer the alewives. Best bait to use

      Mary the problem with goby is they can eat fish their size or bigger. Amd they are very aggressive and eat anything and everything and never get full. Theyvwhupe out whole nests of eggs and fry or juvenile fish. Which can whipe fish species out

      Also they feed on Zebra Mussels which is also invasive but actually helped clean the the dirty lakes and increased the population of other fishes and plants

    • @yollon2550
      @yollon2550 10 місяців тому +1

      Same with the Zander (european walleye) population in river Rhine. There are more of them than in the last decades as they feed on the gobys and their fry is moving in open water quickly and they should benefit eels as they don t reproduce in the river but the ocean. Still these gobys suck to every other fish. They are good bait but you are only allowed to use them on the waters where you caught them and dead. Deep fried goby is tasty but after hearing they can spread diseases I will fry them extra crunchy from now on 😂

    The worst invasive species we had in Cyprus and southern Greece, is Lagocephalus sceleratus, the Silver-cheeked Toadfish, which is a pufferfish species closely related to the fugu pufferfish. They came to the Mediterranean the same way the lionfish did, and have caused massive damage.

    • @yamanmustafa7574

      I'm in Cyprus. At least the lionfish is edible and provides an incentive to spear. Puffer fish are such a nuisance people try to avoid them altogether.

    In the Columbia river basin where I live, we have problems with invasive smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish and walleye. They eat the fry of native salmon and steelhead, and are part of the reason for decreasing runs of our native salmonids. This has effects that goes well beyond the rivers where they live, because salmon are important for transporting nutrients from the ocean to the lands around the salmon spawning grounds, often high in the mountains. This is in addition to the importance of salmon to the culture her in the pacific northwest. I try to do my civic duty by catching as many of these invasive fish as I can, but anglers just can't keep up with them.

It was still kicking after being casted out 25-30m. When we had to go I released it but it floated up to the surface... Job well done? I guess?

    Yeah here in the Netherlands the Round Goby is a big problem. In like the last 10-15 years they have become a pretty dominant species out of nowhere. When you go fishing for small fish in streams or rivers here, you will now most likely catch them in large numbers, while the number of native small fish are decreasing.
    We also have a problem with invasive sweet water lopsters. We pretty much didn't have any of thosd either 15 years ago, and yet now they are pretty common. No clue what the impact if those are though. All i know is that they get out of the water some times, and at least then they aren't dominant. Cats play with them and kill them, while i guess some bird species prey on them.

    It's interesting to watch videos of divers hunting lionfish, they gather in massive flocks underwater and even after fish are skewered by a diver the others barely react at even if the target was literally right next to them. They just float there and let themselves be picked off, it shows how out of control they are because they don't view anything as a threat

    The silver carp is just 1 of 4 invasive carp in the USA that are causing alot of harm to ecosystems. The big head carp, a close relative to the silver carp but can grow much larger is also highly invasive in the us. The black carp and grass carp are also invasive but seem to not get as much coverage.
    Also depending on what state you are in silver and bighead carp are either media blackout or they are front page. In Wisconsin where I am from there are only warning signs and poor pictures in fishing regulations books. When a fisherman asks for any information (like myself) I was ignored by people at the state administration level. 😒 in other states you can find out where, when and how many were netted or fished out by an individual or organization.

      They would be but their family has already been introduced in Europe and the damage has already been done. The thing is that carassius lives where pretty much nothing else is able to survive so it isn't as bad as it could have been. Sometimes you even get to see wild carassius that has interbred with goldfish which is pretty cool.

    • @julienfridt8204
      @julienfridt8204 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, the goldfish and its wild form the prussian carp are invasive in many parts of the earth, the former in most part of the world, the latter was introduced by anglers or fishkeepers into all parts of europe and also must recently into canada. the reason those two fish are such a widespread pest is that they dont need males of thier own species to reproduce, they have the ability of gynognesis, which basically means thier eggs have to be fertilized by any other cyprinid, anything from a minnow to another species of carp will do, they just have to find other fish of the carp family and spawn to lay thier eggs at the same time and place as them. the resulting young from those fertilized eggs are an exact clone of the female that laid the eggs. If you catch either a goldfish or a prussian carp in the wild *kill it!* they can be a massive threat to all native fish

    • @Hazel-the-Amazon
      @Hazel-the-Amazon 3 роки тому +4

      Alewives aren't native to the great lakes though. The alwewives pretty munch almost killed the great lakes. Because Nothing ate them but lake trout. Which was almost wiped out in the 50s because of over fishing. So they had to bring in salmon, and that didn't do any thing. If any thing. The goby has actually helped the great lakes. Every thing eats them, there is more smaller species of fish, and what fish are caught for sport. Are a lot bigger then 30 years ago.

    As some one who lives who fishes, and lives in the great lakes area of the states. It seems like the goby actually has helped more then harmed the lakes. Every thing eats it, the fish people catch are bigger then ever, and some spices are now less prayed on. Not saying everything is perfect, but going from a body of water that was over fished for 200 years, to what experts are saying is now a very healthy fish population. They can't be doing a whole lot of damage right now.

      For most of the world the common carp is a big issue but in the us they've become a staple and I think its pretty good

    In many parts of the US, the silver carp is the ultimate spear/bowfishing target! In Virginia you can even hunt fish with fire arms...

    There are 1000s of sub species of fish in lakes and rivers around the globe and often go extinct before even acknowledged as a species as a kid we had a mud eal living in a pool on the family farm id never seen anything else like it and it could go into the mud during droughts and stay alive .we would never kill them because the numbers were always low.when we sold the farm to some greenies we thought they would be safe.But no the pool they lived in was ripped up and concrete over to put a storm trap on an pipe that went under the road I asked the owners about them .we never saw them they said .I asked did you go there with a spot light at night when they came out no didn't think of that.

    In Germany, the gobys (I think 3 or 4 species in total) got into the Rhine by ship and exploded in population initially
    But after about 2 years they seemed to become part of the food chain and became less prevalent, with the gobys actually benefitting some predatory fishes populations
    But im not sure how this is going to change the ecosystems in the long run

    Aren't Mory Eels able to eat Lion Fish? I know that doesn't help too much against their spread, but just wondering.

      Very closely related. The sizes stated for the Nile Perch are actually those for a barramundi. The Nile Perch has been reported as getting as long as 10 feet or 3 metres. From memory the family containing Nile Perch and Barramundi only has about 4 members.
