    In this video I play using only two fingers in my left hand like the jazz guitar legend Django Reinhardt! The song I play is the classic jazz standard "Autumn Leaves". Arranged for fingerstyle guitar by Lucas Brar.
    Django Reinhardt was born 1910 and died 1953. He left a jazz legacy that to this day is unsurpassed. Together with violinist Stéphane Grappelli he would form the famous "Quintet of the Hot Club of France" group, creating a completely new style of jazz that was to be known as "Gypsy Jazz" or "Jazz Manouche". Django has influenced countless guitarist such as Charlie Byrd, Wes Montgomery, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel & Chet Atkins to mention a few. Great modern day guitarists who play Gypsy Jazz you should check out: Joscho Stephans, Bireli Lagrene & Adrien Moignard.

It's almost as if Lucas has dedicated his life to practice waaay more than 99 per cent of all guitarists out there. But yeah, it's not the amount fingers, it's about knowing what to with them.

    So... there's a few corrections to be made here, though i definitely agree he was the greatest jazz guitarist to ever live (and one of the best guitarists of any style), as well as the very first iconic Guitar Hero.
    Django was not illiterate, though his literacy was very basic (there is a letter from him to Stephane Grappelli during the USA tour with Duke Ellington) in 1946 that shows that very clearly. Later in life, he was very aware of musical theory, and though he wasn't proficient in musical notation, he was composing a very sophisticated Mass with the help of friends.
    Last but not least he didn't play only with 2 fingers, though he had very limited use of the burned fingers. He usually employed them to pin down the lower strings in certain chord shapes he favored for chord soloing, for instance.
    (I've been researching the life and legacy of Django for the last 22 years and I am currently the administrator of the tribute page to him on Facebook).

    Lucas I have the same disability as Django with only the first 2 fingers available. This gave me a ton of inspiration after having to relearn the guitar all over again since my accident in 1971. It's much harder for follow Django due to the quality of film and the quick changing chords, etc. This really helped me immensely. Thanks a bunch!

    My first guitar teacher told me the story of Django back in the 90s. I was into thrash metal and punk. He told me to go to the library and check out his recordings. Best lesson ever. Django made me rethink a lot of what I thought I knew. Made me look at the guitar and how I played differently. He is the ultimate guitar player of all time! You did good man. Really puts things into perspective for those of us with 4 fingers.... and what our potential actually could be.

I've always wanted to play, but no one would teach me because #1- I'm left handed, and #2- the index finger and thumb on my right hand are non-functional due to an injury I suffered when I was 8, I am now 55, and after watching this video, I KNOW there has to be a way, that it IS possible, and I'm going to find it and learn. You can pluck the strings perfectly fine, and you can play like Django with your fretting hand. Even f you don’t develop the level of dexterity that other players have, you’ll be able to do something different. You’ll be forced to play differently, and you’ll probably play differently than any other guitarists, so that even if you can’t do what they can, you have something different.

Also they ruined that symbolism anyway, you still hear the guitar riffs during meaningful moments while playing as Abby, which has nothing to do with her. Last of Us 2 was a great game in all respects except its writing direction, which was simply so terrible everything else great was harder to enjoy because of it. Credit to the writers and artists who still put all the effort in anyway, may their effort stand as testament to getting executives out of art and entertainment.

    As a result, he also developed a unique hand placement that allowed him to use his thumb for a lot of bass notes. This can be the next level evolution for this video!

    Thanks. Never seen that picture before. Gave lessons to a guy who was badly burned in a hot water accident and he lost his fingers on his left fretboard hand. The guy was a left hander and playing a right hand guitar. I switched his guitar round with a new nut and bridge and off he went to better than he was before. He had enough on his left hand to hold a plectrum. So to all you young guitarists out there put an elastic band on your last 2 fingers and wear the shoes of a legend.

      Here's what's amazing: according to biographies I've read, until the accident, he played banjo. He took up the guitar *after* the accident. So this is how he learned.

    • @leonardhudson3810
      @leonardhudson3810 4 роки тому +1

      What I read is that he was a violinist before the accident and found it hard to articulate lines in a phrase that were on the same string. He needed a fretted instrument for articulation.

      @@leonardhudson3810 I've heard recordings of him on the banjo but forgot he started on violin. Of course, once he teamed up with Stephane Grappelli, there was no point playing violin anymore.

    • @JonnyRobels
      @JonnyRobels 4 роки тому

      @@joeldcanfield_spinhead There are 2 or 3 recordings from 1942 in Belgium, were he plays violin. And there is a recording , also from war-time, were he plays a bass-solo, using a bow, so it's a little bit like violin. It was "Japanese Sandman" with an orchestra. It's amazing, because it really sounds like a typical Django solo on guitar!

    My friend who's a year younger than me and hasn't been in jazz class yet and he is so obsessed with van Halen and thinks that he is the best guitarist to ever walk the earth. And since he knows how to play eruption he thinks he's better than everyone else even though he doesn't know basic chord forming. He's gonna be dead in jazz this year.

    • @ihave_noidea
      @ihave_noidea 4 роки тому +3

      He'll adapt or just say fuck it and ignore the 7 and 9 chords like i did my first year of jazz band. Its laziness if he doesnt eventually learn it. I hate jazz but enjoyed the challenge it presented, just tell him to view it like that.

      @@seanbrennan5192 Lol i was worried for him but since he started being a jerk I stopped helping him, and helping him was basically bringing him to the band room in our free hour and trying to teach him something, but instead him just playing a bunch of riffs from songs in the 70s-90s. He didn't even play the full song he'd play like one part and repeat it until I said I was leaving if he didn't stop. I'd much rather be working on some jazz stuff than dealing with his problems.
