In this video I play using only two fingers in my left hand like the jazz guitar legend Django Reinhardt! The song I play is the classic jazz standard "Autumn Leaves". Arranged for fingerstyle guitar by Lucas Brar.
Django Reinhardt was born 1910 and died 1953. He left a jazz legacy that to this day is unsurpassed. Together with violinist Stéphane Grappelli he would form the famous "Quintet of the Hot Club of France" group, creating a completely new style of jazz that was to be known as "Gypsy Jazz" or "Jazz Manouche". Django has influenced countless guitarist such as Charlie Byrd, Wes Montgomery, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel & Chet Atkins to mention a few. Great modern day guitarists who play Gypsy Jazz you should check out: Joscho Stephans, Bireli Lagrene & Adrien Moignard.

Wow that was a very HANDY joke to remember
Well you stole that one from Brushy one string.
Imagine this guy with 2 fingers is better than most guitarrists with the whole hand. Impressive.
This is the advantage that understanding music theory gives you
@@Tin0unoduetre Well also understanding literally every guitar technique and having fast and accurate fingers might have something to with it. It's almost as if Lucas has dedicated his life to practice waaay more than 99 per cent of all guitarists out there. But yeah, it's not the amount fingers, it's about knowing what to with them.

@@Tin0unoduetre Did Django know much music theory? Thought he just played a ton til it sounded good. How do you learn theory while illiterate?
@@Etat7 music theory is basically just scales and intervals its not super complex. Just playing you learn basic music theory like what intervals sound good (a perfect 5th for instance or C to G). And what sounds bad like a minor second (C to C#).
So... there's a few corrections to be made here, though i definitely agree he was the greatest jazz guitarist to ever live (and one of the best guitarists of any style), as well as the very first iconic Guitar Hero.
Django was not illiterate, though his literacy was very basic (there is a letter from him to Stephane Grappelli during the USA tour with Duke Ellington) in 1946 that shows that very clearly. Later in life, he was very aware of musical theory, and though he wasn't proficient in musical notation, he was composing a very sophisticated Mass with the help of friends.
Last but not least he didn't play only with 2 fingers, though he had very limited use of the burned fingers. He usually employed them to pin down the lower strings in certain chord shapes he favored for chord soloing, for instance.
(I've been researching the life and legacy of Django for the last 22 years and I am currently the administrator of the tribute page to him on Facebook).
You should link it. I would like to see the knowledge you have obtained 😅
all of that work for a facebook tribute page, you should be giving talks about him in museums.
Lucas I have the same disability as Django with only the first 2 fingers available. This gave me a ton of inspiration after having to relearn the guitar all over again since my accident in 1971. It's much harder for follow Django due to the quality of film and the quick changing chords, etc. This really helped me immensely. Thanks a bunch!

I was thinking the same : )) Great timing!!
Victor Lin's I hear ya!
Damn.. Is this coincidence?? 🤣🤣

Lucas try and make this a series where you try and impersonate other guitar legends
Daniel Olaniran that’s a pretty good idea
He’s the legend of all legends
Sounds like a great idea!
YES! Next episode: Wes Montgomery and his "thumb sound"
@@LucasBrar yeah i'd like to know about more Great Jazz Guitarrist
My first guitar teacher told me the story of Django back in the 90s. I was into thrash metal and punk. He told me to go to the library and check out his recordings. Best lesson ever. Django made me rethink a lot of what I thought I knew. Made me look at the guitar and how I played differently. He is the ultimate guitar player of all time! You did good man. Really puts things into perspective for those of us with 4 fingers.... and what our potential actually could be.
Thank you for the inspiration. I've always wanted to play, but no one would teach me because #1- I'm left handed, and #2- the index finger and thumb on my right hand are non-functional due to an injury I suffered when I was 8, I am now 55, and after watching this video, I KNOW there has to be a way, that it IS possible, and I'm going to find it and learn. Again, thank you so much for giving me hope.
Do it, man. That's the move.
Dude just teach yourself. There's literally unlimited resources now with the internet. Just look up left handed lessons
Listen more to Django Reinhardt and get more inspired :)
You can pluck the strings perfectly fine, and you can play like Django with your fretting hand. Even f you don’t develop the level of dexterity that other players have, you’ll be able to do something different. You’ll be forced to play differently, and you’ll probably play differently than any other guitarists, so that even if you can’t do what they can, you have something different.
do you live in the bay area?
ok, now play without finger
*open tuning*
he will play it with his teeth just like jimi hendrix.
*nothing else matters starts to play*
Dj0nt?
Play without guitar
lucas and django with 2 fingers >>>>>>>> me with all of my fingers
sad but it's true
Hey you’ll get better with practice!
Everyone: Hold my beer.

Dont worry guys, ellie can play guitar without 2 finger
she could also learn left handed guitar
Now the ending just makes no sense at all
and this is what i searched after finishing the game
Who is ellie?
@Daruki Neo Then it's dumb af, endings are supposed to be for narrative purposes, the symbolism is only supposed to be a result of a well crafted narrative. Also they ruined that symbolism anyway, you still hear the guitar riffs during meaningful moments while playing as Abby, which has nothing to do with her. Last of Us 2 was a great game in all respects except its writing direction, which was simply so terrible everything else great was harder to enjoy because of it. Credit to the writers and artists who still put all the effort in anyway, may their effort stand as testament to getting executives out of art and entertainment.

Django is GOD! Do you have a favourite Jazz Guitarist?? Check out the whole clip of Django here: ua-cam.com/video/ANArGmr74u4/v-deo.html
Are you familiar with Wes Montgomery?
Mateo manccuso and you
He is my favorite too. I should do the same. You got a lot of respect points with this.
Yes, love him
You.
Ellie.. you're safe! Watch this!! 🙏
Django should be an inspiration for any musician of any instrument. Anytime I feel like my hands are just not built for piano or guitar I think of Django. Don’t let any physical limitations impede your musical growth.

Anyone else heard “ the autumn leaves”??
Yeah, mid way I was like " is that the chord progression of autumn leaves" and then he literally came out with the ending melody of the song
From the beginning ;)
Hmm
Autumn fingers
Wait wasnt it the song that he payed?
How could someone not hwar it?
There are actually a lot of gipsies around that don’t know how to read or write but play music heavenly. No surprise, guess what django was
makes me laugh when when some musicians think having musical literacy is totally necessary, f***ing snobs.
They know about music they just don’t use the same vocabulary, and they can’t read sheets. But harmony they know pretty damn well
Nice to see a big UA-camr who appreciates my cultures music long live django’s legacy

Love learning a little history while being thoroughly entertained.Another great one Lucas!
Glad to hear that!
_Entertained?_ Amazed you mean ☺
Django was one of a kind. One of the greatest guitarists to ever live
This version moved me. I've heard and played autumn leaves for nearly 2 thousand times, but this version clearly had something special
Fantastic Lucas. I've loved Django since my father introduced me to his music maybe fifty or so years ago. I cNt come close to playing like him, but I was thrilled to see you finger picking Django as I much prefer fingerpicking. Sometimes due to a touch of arthritis in my hands I try to play with two or three fingers. So your performance basically blew me away. Thanks!
Glad to hear that, thanks for your comment! Django is so inspiring in the way he dealt with his challenge. Keep playing! :D
Epic 👏👏

I knew about Django before TLoU2 and instantly thought of him when I heard about Ellie

hello, I am 42yo bass player that has been playing bass for nearly 30 years... I have never been inspired to play anything other than a bass until I was turned onto Django about 15 years ago... He is my favorite guitarist and an inspiration to my life. Great video and thank you. Lastly, I would ask for more of these type of (2-finger) playing videos if you are so inclined. Thank You again!
Someone send Ellie this video right now

Имитация Джанго! Это действительно впечатляет! Браво! Вы сделали свои вариации на многих музыкантов, соединяли разные стили. Интересно бы было увидеть Ваш взгляд на музыку Джими Хендрикса. С уважением!
Glad to see Django get some love! He's one of my greatest influences.
Fantastic! You really incorporated the feel of Django's flow. He actually used to play banjo before the accident and only picked up the guitar after when his brother brought it to him while he was recovering from the fire.
As a result, he also developed a unique hand placement that allowed him to use his thumb for a lot of bass notes. This can be the next level evolution for this video!
Ellie better look this up
nice one, this inspired me to chop off a couple a fingers
My husband is such a uniquely sounding guitar player. He is missing the same finger and I love listening to him. It gives a special sound that is hard to replicate unless you have this in your soul and have to play to live..like the air we breathe. So proud of my husband every day
Till nowdays i dont know why did not anybody make a hollywood movie about life of Django. So great biography and music from this person.
Last time I was this early
Lucas didn't wear a fedora
Soooo......... Never???
Early for what? Being a jagoff?
Thank you Lucas for this quick but really great tutorial. You've helped me come a bit closer to understanding and appreciating this musical genius. Before written music there was only, ...music! Your other related video(s) are of tremendous help and value. The road ahead is long with many twists, but that only makes the journey even more enjoyable. Hej då.

Reading and writing words is not the same as reading and writing music. You have stellar rhythm.
Dude that was truly fantastic!. By getting the two end notes of the chord and knowing the open string to play......I'm just blown awaym would not have thought that could be done
Ellie needs to learn from this guy

Frettinghand amputee over here.. Recently lost my middlefinger and severely damaged my ringfinger in a chainsaw accident at work.. I play the most with index and little finger now with some thumb for the upper strings.. First I was like f****ck, but I've learned some quite interesting voicings/intervals for myself and my playing got waayyy more creative.. This opens up the understanding of the fretboard even more, I'm actually thankful learning this in a weird kind of way.. Your video gave me goosebumps man!!! It's some huge inspiration TY

I would think that one would almost have the hear the music differently in one's head to be able to play that way - which only makes Django seem like more of a genius!

Wow, just imagine what he could do with his whole hand

Well done sir! You put those 2 fingers through their paces, but the end result was very commendable!
Django is crazy good and super talented. Thanks for this
I couldn’t play that using all 10 fingers and lets add in 5 toes.
Robert McDaniel what if you were to use 10 toes?
I believe it would be just as bad as my 10 fingers not cooperating on a fretboard

Thanks. Never seen that picture before. Gave lessons to a guy who was badly burned in a hot water accident and he lost his fingers on his left fretboard hand. The guy was a left hander and playing a right hand guitar. I switched his guitar round with a new nut and bridge and off he went to better than he was before. He had enough on his left hand to hold a plectrum. So to all you young guitarists out there put an elastic band on your last 2 fingers and wear the shoes of a legend.
Ellie needs this tutorial
I couldn't play like that with a full complement of fingers.
I wonder what made Django decide to continue playing that way after the accident as opposed to relearning guitar fretting with his right hand and plucking with his left
Here's what's amazing: according to biographies I've read, until the accident, he played banjo. He took up the guitar *after* the accident. So this is how he learned.
What I read is that he was a violinist before the accident and found it hard to articulate lines in a phrase that were on the same string. He needed a fretted instrument for articulation.
@@leonardhudson3810 I've heard recordings of him on the banjo but forgot he started on violin. Of course, once he teamed up with Stephane Grappelli, there was no point playing violin anymore.
@@joeldcanfield_spinhead There are 2 or 3 recordings from 1942 in Belgium, were he plays violin. And there is a recording , also from war-time, were he plays a bass-solo, using a bow, so it's a little bit like violin. It was "Japanese Sandman" with an orchestra. It's amazing, because it really sounds like a typical Django solo on guitar!
@@JonnyRobels Sounds amazing. All the versions I find have Django on guitar. Any chance of a link?
You are genius bro, it is like a tribute to Sir Django Reinhardt.
you make me fall deep in love with jazz
My friend who's a year younger than me and hasn't been in jazz class yet and he is so obsessed with van Halen and thinks that he is the best guitarist to ever walk the earth. And since he knows how to play eruption he thinks he's better than everyone else even though he doesn't know basic chord forming. He's gonna be dead in jazz this year.
He'll adapt or just say fuck it and ignore the 7 and 9 chords like i did my first year of jazz band. Its laziness if he doesnt eventually learn it. I hate jazz but enjoyed the challenge it presented, just tell him to view it like that.
@@ihave_noidea my first year I didnt particularly love jazz but now I'm probably going to a music school now that I've started. I love jazz now, and my first year was a little difficult but I started practicing a lot more on actual important things instead of fancy finger work. I practice almost 2-3 hours everyday now
He thinks Van Halen was the best, he should listen to zappa. To each his own I suppose. Django was up there, definitely legendary status
@@seanbrennan5192 Lol i was worried for him but since he started being a jerk I stopped helping him, and helping him was basically bringing him to the band room in our free hour and trying to teach him something, but instead him just playing a bunch of riffs from songs in the 70s-90s. He didn't even play the full song he'd play like one part and repeat it until I said I was leaving if he didn't stop. I'd much rather be working on some jazz stuff than dealing with his problems.
The Bandit Sounds like a Van Halen fanboy 😏
