Have one of these. Got it on clearance at Kiddie City an age ago. Putting it up for auction NOW. And you are right, this toy is FRAGILE. Had issues with it 25 years ago with the landing gear, and had the "head" snap off and one of the clips that holds the rifle in place break off when I put it in storage. Had no idea it was so rare. Thanks for the great video on the history of the Robotech Veritech fighter.
+Shawn James Hi Shawn, How rare are these? I had one and took it back as I could tell I was gonna break it. I have the SDF-1 playset, does anyone know how rare that is?
Awesome to see the old school VF's getting some attention and care like this. Makes me want to dig my Robotech stuff out of the attic and go over their condition...
Wow Matchbox, even left the pegs in place where the shoulders would swivel out, like on Jetfire or the Yamato models. Oh man, this would have been amazing if it transformed. I remember seeing this in Lionel Playworld.
As a kid, when my cousin and I played Robotech, we used a G.I. Joe Sky Striker for the jets and Jetfire for the mecha. Jetfire was much better put together than most Transformers and much better than the actual Robotech toys. They figures were so cheap! Only one I saw that didn't suck were the Invid.
Had one of those a long long time ago and dismantled it in hopes there was a way it could transform. Such a missed play opportunity by making it stuck in jet mode. I’m sure a lot of kids tried dismantling it in hopes it could do more. I’m hoping someone will take the time one day to print out parts to make a transformable version of the Matchbox Veritrch. Good job on the vid!
I swore black and blue that this could transform when I got one in the 80s. I could see the damn hinges! Luckily, I was too young to attempt forcing it and left it alone. Now after all these years I see the stories of why it was meant to but never was able to. I also had the Zentradi Officer Battlepod (I seem to remember it being called a Marauder for some reason) and your standard Battlepod as well. I searched far and wide for a Cyclone but alas, Australia seemed to never have any available.
had this toy stored away in the garage up until a year ago don't know what happened to it, I remember countless arguments with friends growing up on the jet fire sky fire argument lol
Sorry about the ebay seller. When the system works, it's a great freling that the toy collecting community, through transparency and honesty can collectively appreciate the vintage toys. When the system doesn't work, Amazon or Ebay sellers selling opened items as MISB or claiming mint or complete when clearly the item is not, it's just a frustrating and wholely negative experience. Great videos, keep up the great work.
It's amazing how so many sellers on eBay come up with pure BS to their customers when "they know", are 100% schooled on what they are buying from them. When they know they are busted they still BS back to the buyer. Everything about this video is great. Another awesome video my friends!!!!
You know, as a millennial, it's really hard for me to collect these awesome old toys, i wish some company would re release these robotech toys for macross fans and collectors, also make the valkyrie or veritech, fully transformable.
What a shame there were shitty lawsuits over something that was NEVER a part of the Transformer/Diaclone toyline to begin with! This must have been a very rare toy back in the 80s since I never remember seeing them in toy stores at all.
@@RedwoodTheElf the dubbed and maybe non-dubbed Macross series is on Amazon, I think. So is Southern Cross, and MOSPEADA. I want to see the JDM version of Battle of the Planet, Gatchaman. Good luck.
This is the main reason i subscribed to this channel the toy restorations(mostly the ones he does on his transformers G1 collections)his thoughts and opinions on 80's cartoons i always wondered where they(hasbro)got or should i say stole the idea for the G1 jetfire toyline figure they took it from robotech i never even knew that even back then...
This confused me as a 10 year old in 1987. Robotech Matchbox toys were basically being liquidated in '87 due to decline in popularity and the original American series being over. My father took me to a toy store for my tenth birthday and let me pick out anything I wanted and I saw this and wanted it and I think my dad was glad it was relatively cheap in price too. I get home and open it and I was kind of bummed that it didn't transform. But I still had fun with it. Imagination made up for the lack of transforming.
I loved the Veritech Hover Tank from Southern Cross. Loved. The Matchbox issue did the biped-tank mode, and battloid mode, but not the no-leg tank/transport. I wonder if any toy ever did. I'd also love to see other (veritech & single-mode) mecha from that series.
Outstanding video!! Please get to the Robotech series soon. I want to see how you stack it up to the rest. Each toyline/cartoon I've loved, you've put it thru the wringer and made me love this hobby more.
Good vid! The ongoing Robotech and JDM distinct stand-alone series is so SMH!!!! I found out Harmony Gold retained it's original rights in a recent sit down. It's funny, S7 has Macross Micronians in 1:18 scale, while MEPTOYS has Zentraedi Breetai, currently, at 1/100 scale (makes him six inches), a good height for use with S7 figures. MEPTOYS has plans for a 1:18 Dana Sterling from Southern Cross. The license just goes everywhere! There were even nods in the Voltron cartoon to Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Max and Miriya Sterling, and Roy Fokker as an instructor in the lounge. Imagine if someone took a Jetfire transformer, upscale all of the parts to 1:18, then actually built it. It would be a true to scale, three or four foot tall, Veritech. Then put an S7 Rick Hunter in the cockpit.
I had this toy back in the day... lol I remember the disappointment when I took it out of the box and tried to transform it. I still kinda liked it though. In the end it became beige instead of yellow and I just let it rot...
Wow, the head on the Matchbox VF-1S is a weird hybrid. The main body of the head is the VF-1J as you said. But the VF-1J head only has one cannon on each side, while the VF-1S has two cannons on each side. So the Matchbox VF-1S has a Vf-1J head main body with the cannons of a VF-1S. So, it's kind of a VF-1S head, but also not, and kind of a VF-1J head, but also not.
Always wanted to get the matchbox version of this toy, but I settled getting its re-release in the mid '90s when Exo-Squad cross polinated with Robotech in its playmates toy line.
So the original toy had a VF-1J head with VF-1S laser cannons AND the grey goggles of the VF-1J when its wearing the GBP full armor. Wow that's crazy they got it so wrong originally!
There was this shop in Manchester England that I loved going to, it was called Odyssey One (then it became a Forbidden Planet and I still go there even know) and it had Classic Robotech Figures and Vehicles, mint condition still in their original package never been opened. If only I had know about them then and that they were worth something I probably would have bought them, but at the time I was into collecting Aliens and Predator figures from Kenner.
I have one of these but the front support for the landing gear snapped, one side of the head guns is messed up, and the backpack fins snapped (I fixed it when I was a kid with duct tape). I have all the missile pods and the auto cannon. I would sell it for parts if you're interested
Ah, man, I worked in a toy store xmas of '85, and I stocked the shelves with these things (And the USS Flag), and I thought, "Well, no reason to buy it now, I'm sure the show will be popular for years, and I"ll be able to pick it up cheaper over the summer." Nope. Stupid me. I did manage to get an SDF-1, however. It's a bummer this didn't transform. I honestly did not know that until now.
Good morning love the video , same thing happened to me with a cobra rattler, seller said it must have been shipping that broke it. I feel seller knew and sold it broken. Ughhh i feel your pain,
I remember wanting to make mine actually transform. Maybe today with 3d printers it is possible, but that cockpit is way too big. Might as well get a bandai or takatoku chunkey monkeys, and call it a day. Which is what i eventually did. This Robotech toy is like The Last Jedi: So much potential, but a failed attempt. I may even have some of the missiles somewhere. If i find them, you can have them.
Wow. Up until today, I had no clue that Robotech had even aired in the United States prior to its debut on Toonami in the late 1990's, much less had an accompanying toy line. I wonder if it aired opposite Thundercats in my hometown or something and that's why I missed it when it first ran. I'm sorry to hear you got taken for a ride, but at least the resulting video was super interesting. Thank you.
the original serious is what brought me into anime. that was so many years ago back in the 80's. Back then no cartoon character die. It was almost robot tanks, and robot planes. For those that seen show like Manziger Z and such. Robotech was the first show that had someone in the main case die. I love it. It felt so real to me. years later I learn about BattleTech and how robotech and battle tech went into lawsuit wars on who owns the right to such design as a the veritech fighter.
Could have sworn this toy when I was given one as a gift could transform into Guardian mode. I only remember this because I was disapointed that it did not go full Battleoid mode. I wonder if I am wrong because I saw a prototype image as this toy did transform into Guardian mode. Do you know, since I bought one back in the day in Australia, did the model that get shipped out to Australia was the one that was more prototype style or is my memory playing tricks on me? I just remember the head was restricting half of the body to fold as though it could fold.
This video has gotten a lot of views. Do you think you will have a video just on ROBOTECH, the show and\or the toys that were available in the 80´s? Thanks for all the cool vids. I enjoy them a lot!
More the curiosity than anything I was just wondering why you guys didn't use the correct head and make a resin cast of it to have to complete models?.
One of these was out of the package at a store in the mall, and I would always try to bend the legs to transform it, and was always upset that I could not figure it out.
Funny, didn't Harmony Gold take Hasbro to court last year because of the GI Joe/ Jetfire toy? I guess they settled the dispute in October 2013, but....I can't think of words to finish my thought.
Oh yeah, it was the Comic Con model kit with untransformable vehicles. It's just funny how one character could cause so much trouble. Anyway, from what I understand, Currently, Harmony Gold owns the transformable Veritech toy/ model designs in the US. Somebody correct me if I am wrong because this is confusing.
The thing is, the original Transformers Jetfire toy was made using the same mold as a VF-1S Super Valkyrie, and Hasbro bought the rights to the Transformers franchise. Therefore, Hasbro has rightful ownership over a design, which is the exact same as the Veritech fighters. In truth, Harmony Gold only bough the show and owns none of the designs themselves, but that is for another time.
@@米空軍パイロット I think G1 Jetfire was a Bandai design that Hasbro went into production on before realizing that it wasn't included with the deal that they had with Takara. Matchbox acquired the rights to reproduce the design in North America from Bandai simultaneously, so Hasbro changed the look and name of Jetfire to Skyfire as the G1 Jetfire toy was already released to the public!
Sorry to hear about your ebey purchase. But at least you have an additional story to tell for the video. :) Is the Robotech Veritech Fighter bigger than the G.I.Joe Sky Striker? If I'm not mistaken, that kind of Veritech Fighter never got to the Mass retail market here in the Philippines. Only the pilots action figures did. I found that odd. Coz, all we had here were the Macross Jetfire sized toy robots. :D
Some original parts could be still used, like the tail block, the wings, part of the legs, the head and the cockpit, but the rest need to be redesigned anew. Not and easy job but quite possible.
I hope you will have the bike that is I think greenish blue. No idea what is was called but I think it came with an action figure. I loved Robotech growing up. I look forward to whats to come.
With all the trouble you had taking this apart. How the hell did they assemble it in the factory? I can't imagine the machinery it took to put this together.
Great video!!! By chance you ever do one of these for the matchbox sdf-1. I got one that needs some care but wouldn't mind something like this for it lol
A friend of mine really wanted this for his birthday back in the day. I remember how disappointed he was when he found out it doesn't transform. Is it really true there was a lawsuit? I thought it was related to difficulties in engineering the transformation in the larger vehicle...but my information mostly comes from my Macross forums. It's amazing how many people profited from the Macross mecha designs, (i.e. Battletech, Transformers) besides Harmony Gold. Oh and great video!
it appear in japan the original creator of the line sold the right to build there toys to another company. Who in term past the rights on to us. While the original anime sold the right to the anime to another us company. So it be a clusterFk on who actually owns what right and so on. It took a while for the lawsuit involve the Japanese company to settle and the people that thought they own the rights are still working out who owns what. The lastest words is that Harmony gold only owns the anime but not the lincease to produce models and toys. I think that may be right. Basically its kind of like the doctor who and time. its a wobbling.. thing
Soon you reverse a modification to make the toy more show accurate, and you part out a perfectly good one to do so. I don't see it myself but hey, lots of good info just the same.
What you should do is use the other remains of the one with the jet fire head and try and convert it into some sort of robot mode you'd need to split the arms but that's not the most difficult thing in the world
I ran into an unscrupulous Ebay seller recently. I bought 17 '89-'91 G.I. Joes and 6 figures were super glued together at the waist! That wasn't in the description at all. I managed to undo the glue on Rock & Roll (v.2) Ambush, Topside, Low-Light (v.3) and Updraft, but unfortunatly Dusty (V.3) was glued so liberally that I accidentally busted his torso and crotch while trying to unpry him. His back piece is still firmly stuck to the crotch with no hope of coming undone. The O-rings were still in tact, and none of the screws in the back were striped. After insepecting the figures in question, I saw no real reason why they were glued outside of the fact that their legs were a little loose due to their O-rings being old and loose. So rather than replacing the o-rings with newer tighter ones, the previous or one of the previous owners decided to super glue the torsos to the waist. Each figure was put in an individual zip-lock bag with their name written on the bag, and with the correct assesroies with each figure. This person obviously knew enough about these figures to know that they were suppose to turn at the waist and decided not to put that in the description.
Okay, I'd love to see a total kit bash of this toy where some ambitious soul completely chops it up, crafts new sections and joins, and creates a (likely no-transformable) robot version, just to say "Screw you, lawsuit! I'll transform my toy if I damn well feel like it!"
It is a Jetfire head, but that Jetfire mold was based on the Takatoku VF-1S, the earliest Valkyrie toy that predates Transformers. It's still a shitty thing to do don't get me wrong, but it is the appropriate head for that design, since Matchbox fucked up and used J-type head with the S-type's quad laser turrets I'm aware I'm 6 years late for this video
Entertaining and informative as always M&M. I know you are a decent person and are above engaging in negative commentary so I'll say it for you, what an a-hole that shiester from E-bay is. On a lighter note, the disassembly at the beginning was reminiscent of late 80's early 90's suspense thrillers, " I dont know what to do. " Just cut the blue wire! " lol
Like I am just watching the Robotech TV Series on my Apple TV hey!! Seeing all of this is both fascinating and also sad because the toy makers back then should have given all of this to the world in an unlocked way hey!! I think they should like do that now so the collectors and fans can get what they wanted and cherish it hey!!
We need a conversion kit to turn the Veritech into a transforming toy. 3D printed maybe?
Robotech: the only show to hold a loftier status in my memories than Transformers.

Great video!!! By chance you ever do one of these for the matchbox sdf-1. I got one that needs some care but wouldn't mind something like this for it lol
is it at all possible to make this thing transform or at least possible to put it into robot mode with some miner customizastion?
Neither of those two jets looks bright white, is that how they originally came or is it discoloring from age?
I have the Harmony Gold Veritech, and it's even more brittle than the Matchbox toys. The Playmates versions are actually higher quality plastic.
What you should do is use the other remains of the one with the jet fire head and try and convert it into some sort of robot mode you'd need to split the arms but that's not the most difficult thing in the world
It's Robo...technology!
That Robotech toy was the same design for the G1 transformer, Jetfire.
G1 Jetfire IS a Macross toy
PrimusVsUnicron No. It's a transformers toy that ised the same exact plastic molds for production and varied only slightly in paint scheme.
@@米空軍パイロット It even still has the UN Spacy emblems molded into it.
@@VulpisFoxfire Yep. They never changed the molds. Only the coloring.
Striped like a candy cane? Or "stripped?"
is the robotech viedos on your own site
Is this toy supposed to be bone white or more like an slightly off-white color?
Okay, I'd love to see a total kit bash of this toy where some ambitious soul completely chops it up, crafts new sections and joins, and creates a (likely no-transformable) robot version, just to say "Screw you, lawsuit! I'll transform my toy if I damn well feel like it!"
cannot wait for your robotech cartoon rant
The paperback books by Jack Mckinney are great. I would say better than the cartoon even though it had a great intro!
I had cousin that had this as a child.
📣 MOD THAT SHYT AND MAKE IT TRANSFORMABLE
It is a Jetfire head, but that Jetfire mold was based on the Takatoku VF-1S, the earliest Valkyrie toy that predates Transformers.
It's still a shitty thing to do don't get me wrong, but it is the appropriate head for that design, since Matchbox fucked up and used J-type head with the S-type's quad laser turrets
I'm aware I'm 6 years late for this video
Your guy who makes battle star 3.75 ships needs to do a parts upgrade to make this transform
I would build a cut away of a blade runner apartment building
i've bought stuff like that..and i had to repair it myself
Entertaining and informative as always M&M. I know you are a decent person and are above engaging in negative commentary so I'll say it for you, what an a-hole that shiester from E-bay is. On a lighter note, the disassembly at the beginning was reminiscent of late 80's early 90's suspense thrillers, " I dont know what to do. " Just cut the blue wire! " lol
Can you modify it to be a transforming mecha?
wow I had no idea that matchbox Veritech was SO BAD!
I always saw the bandai around china town or bootlegs. But never the matchbox ones.
That commercial: Lisa Hayes; damsel in distress? The shame of it...
Like I am just watching the Robotech TV Series on my Apple TV hey!! Seeing all of this is both fascinating and also sad because the toy makers back then should have given all of this to the world in an unlocked way hey!! I think they should like do that now so the collectors and fans can get what they wanted and cherish it hey!!
its a shame that this happened, but it did make for an interesting restoration video.
