Disney made money hand over fist on stories they stole from others. Cinderella, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Jungle Book, Tangled, The Lion King, I could go on, were other people's ideas, books, and characters that Disney "perfected" and made family friendly with happy endings. Then they procured Marvel, Star Wars, and other IPs that already had lore and followers. When it came time to produce original content, results varied greatly. When they went back to the tried & true remake well, much like recycled water, no one's falling over themselves to partake. Not only is there franchise fatigue but also choice paralysis. Ignoring merit based hiring for diversity checkboxes is never a good strategy for finding directors, writers, producers, or any of the other important creative roles.
I’m glad Treasure Planet now has a cult following. Those box office numbers are terrible and opening against the third weekend of Harry Potter 2 and just other films that Thanksgiving were doing much better. It at least had a positive critical reception then.
So glad Lightyear failed. Nobody asked Disney to ditch what was working in the movies and, especially, the Buzz Lightyear cartoon in order to create a crap storyline and characters.
"Turning Red" is so good! also, these are perfect examples of why Disney does remakes and sequels so often...they know what will guarantee to bring them money
Treasure planet is a masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says. The fact that it wasn't a box office success is that it was released the same year as Star Wars: Attack of the clones, Harry Potter the chamber of secrets and also the first Spiderman movie.
I work in a movie theater. Strange World was put out to die. From my perspective (and not representing any company I may or may not work for or have been employed by) Disney had ZERO faith in that movie. Once backlash started happening in the months before release they pulled the drag chute. The opening weekend came and there was no noticable bump in ticket sales for the location I was working at. No one cared about it. Even families coming in looking for something to watch didn't realize it was out and only bought tickets if they decided nothing else was worth it. Strange World probably would have fared better as a "straight to VHS" movie. For Seeing Red, that's a hard one to pin down. Theatrical releases survive on having RELATIVELY broad appeal. Red has a pretty specific audience: young asian girls within the first two generations of immigration to the US. Yes, other people can enjoy it, but the story is written from the perspective of an asian girl in a more traditional immigrant family which is educational, but not something that many outside of that demographic group can identify with. I'm not going to say it shouldn't have been made, but at the same time I'm not surprised it didn't do better. Even if it had better luck with its original theatrical release (no pandemic) I don't think it would have made much more. Lone Ranger was SUCH a disappointment. I wish they made better choices with the script, casting, and direction. I remember watching the black and white Lone Ranger at my grandparents house when I was a little kid and I loved it. I had such high hopes for the movie, but it was...just...awful. I even felt excitement when they started playing the William Tell Overture at the big fight scene, but I was still let down. Lone Ranger is about a man who's family is killed and he gets "revenge" by being a law man and bringing people to justice and refusing to shoot to kill. His whole thing about using silver bullets was that the silver won't cause a gunshot wound to fester with disease or lead poisoning (questionable science, but I could suspend disbelief). I was also hoping for a better treatment of Tanto, but that was...oof. That was a special kind of poor taste. I hope someone does a new Lone Ranger and tries to capture the pure hearted spirit of the original and not the schlock of the reboot.
Lots of these are recent which isn’t a surprise at all. Nowadays, Disney just craps out shit because they think audiences will just flock to the Disney name.
Turning Red feels unfair to be included. It wasn't a bad movie, critics and audiences pretty much all liked it. It was just a victim of circumstance. It flopped due to things outside anyone's control.
Treasure Planet has such a good following behind it nowadays that with all the live action remakes, they're wanting Disney to remake it into one. It deserves much more praise than it got back then
There are many movies that don't deserve to flop. Often they fail because they're ahead of their time, they're too far behind their time, or they're associated for some reason or other with films that did deserve to fail. They still can be good films on their own terms. For example, I enjoyed THE 13TH WARRIOR for what it was intended to be, which wasn't much. I'm slightly surprised that SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY didn't make this list.
It's shocking what was left off this short-sighted list. Let's review some OTHER major failures for the House of Mouse that includes Marvel and Lucas Films with the projected dollar loss based on Production/Marketing against ticket sales Here are the additional films Mojo left off their list: 200m Alice Through the Looking Glass; 200m Prince of Persia: Sands of Timeless; 150m Home on the Range; 150m Sorcerer’s Apprentice; 130m Nutcracker and the Four Realms; 140m The BGF; 170m Dumbo (Live-Action); 275m Star Wars: Han Solo; 150m Cruella; 150m Pixar Soul; 200m Marve’s Black Window; 180m Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil; 175m Pixar Onward; 150m Mary Poppins Return; 200m Marvel’s Eternals; 250m Black Panther II; 250m AntMan & Wasp III; 250m The Marvels. That adds up to close to 3 billion dollars. And that didn't include Thor Love/Thunder of Doctor Strange II, both that had high production costs. Plus looking back at some of the films, a few were highly entertaining and deserved to have been more successful.
The newest Haunted Mansion movie was actually very good. I also liked Newsies, John Carter and I remember liking the 13th Warrior, but it was quite some time ago that I saw it.
I think even if Lightyear didn’t have the controversy , it still would’ve bombed, since it was the first Pixar movie to be released in theaters since the Pandemic and people have gotten used to Pixar movies going to straight to streaming.
One of my favorite Live-Action Disney movies of all time is Newsies. I first saw it as a Broadway Show when I was a kid and when I found out it was a movie, watched it. I LOVED IT! I get why it failed at the time but I have always loved it and always enjoy re-watching it. Also as a kid I loved the Black Cauldron and it was one of the most watched for me growing up. My mom bought it when it came out on VHS in 1997.
Treasure planet is my favorite Disney movie and they were ahead of their time Strange World was a great movie and the protagonist’s preference had NOTHING to do with the plot and was lightly referenced. Well written movie that had elements of a family drama
Had Gigantic been a thing with Disney, I think it would have been gigantic(no pun intended)at the box office. Having said that, I think Disney’s best days are well behind them.
I honestly didn't get to see lightyear in theaters, but seeing how bad the changes they made for the lore of the toy Story movies, i kinda avoid it for audience's mixed reactions

I don't know alot about the development of it.
I actually enjoyed all the movies except for Newies, A Wrinkle in Time, The New Mutants, Around the World in 80 days, Jungle Cruise, The Alamo, The 13th Warrior, and The Black Cauldron
13th warrior was 🔥 and still is watchable
I missed it completely during its theatrical run, watched it for the first time just a couple years ago, I thought it was a solid movie.
I enjoy it too, but I did not know it was part of Disney, this is a shocking surprise.
It was a great movie, don't care what anyone else thinks.
Some of them are Underrated
Wish was a box office bomb
You got that right!
I'm surprised it wasn't here.
@@annafowdy Me too, I guess they can't squeeze in everything.
Not as bad as the the ones on the list though…didn’t it make 100 mill or so? That’s half its budget and there was reduced marketing for it…
@@jwace It was terrible, and Asha is probably the worst Disney heroine. She ruined Magnifico's perfect utopia
I actually liked John Carter, 😢
Just because a movie flops doesn't make it an absolute failure. Treasure Planet and Turning Red are proof of that
John Carter was a GREAT movie and I will die on this hill. Even my dad liked it lol
This shows how complacency, studio meddling, and checking boxes backfires in the long run

Yeah! For real
Treasure Planet was phenomenal
Top 20 Times Disney went TOO FAR.
Yes
Good Idea for a list!
I think a list for top 10 controversial Disney movies would also be a great idea for a video.
I wish all Disney films would flop. They’re trashing the movie industry 🤬
"Turning Red" is so good!
also, these are perfect examples of why Disney does remakes and sequels so often...they know what will guarantee to bring them money
Until they don't.
What's the difference between Texans & Disney?
Texans say, "Remember The Alamo!"
And Disney says, "...well..."
"The Black Cauldron" totally deserves a live-action remake
No, no live action. I like The Black Cauldron but a live action version of it would just ruin it entirely
I keep hearing this plenty agree, which yeah, make it darker and more gritty along the line, especially from the books.
No no God please no just stop these live-action remakes
🎖
Careful what you wish for... a Disney remake means a girlboss protagonist and diversity to the point of excluding Euro Americans...
I loved "Mulan", "Strange World", "The Black Cauldron" and especially "Turning Red". I saw "Treasure Planet" & found it dreadfully boring.
Despite box Office bombs, is there anyone who like these movies, because i do especially treasure planet.
I loved Treasure Planet and the 13th Warrior.
Treasure planet is a masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says. The fact that it wasn't a box office success is that it was released the same year as Star Wars: Attack of the clones, Harry Potter the chamber of secrets and also the first Spiderman movie.
Wish should also be on the list!
What about the good dinosaur? Consider the movie became the first box office bomb before lightyear
While you were talking about Lightyear, what do u mean by that it betrays Toy Story lore
Some of these movies are actually very good.
The Black Cauldron was one I’d seen upon its release. I wondered why it wasn’t released until 1998. It’s also the first Disney film with a PG rating.
It deserves much more praise than it got back then
Onward didn’t make the cut. It prematurely became a box office disappointment due to the beginning of the covid 19 pandemic
Heres something I heard. I heard that for the Mulan remake they wanted to stick mostly closer to the original Legned of Mulan.
Sometimes? Hard to name a Disney success in the last five years minimum.
Basically, every recent movie is a flop for Disney
My kids absolutely love The Black Cauldron.
Treasure planet is my favorite Disney movie and they were ahead of their time
Strange World was a great movie and the protagonist’s preference had NOTHING to do with the plot and was lightly referenced. Well written movie that had elements of a family drama
Underrated or not, I enjoyed 2023’s The Haunted Mansion
Everyday at work tell myself money is money- did Walken do the Country Bears because he loved the script? Nope. Money
Had Gigantic been a thing with Disney, I think it would have been gigantic(no pun intended)at the box office. Having said that, I think Disney’s best days are well behind them.
Yeah, Bob iger has lived long enough to become a villain, at least finacially😂
@@chheinrich8486 Right. Anyways, Skydance Animation is doing Gigantic now.
I'm not much of an optimist, but I'm still holding onto the hope that they'll eventually turn things around.
@@nathanielpatterson-rc9dqThey will once Bob Iger is quickly replaced with my two picks for Disney’s next co-CEOs: Alan Bergman and Dana Walden.
I would've liked to see that movie, it would've been nice to have another giant girl in the Disney family, besides Alice.
Despite the title in this video, a lot of people in the comments here will disagree
I actually love Around The World In 80 Days. It's funny and full of heart. ❤
It was a decent film tbh
You gotta wonder how much money Clooney got offered to do Tomorrowland
Mars Needs Moms is too weird to be bad but too confusing to be good. Its just a odd movie.
I honestly didn't get to see lightyear in theaters, but seeing how bad the changes they made for the lore of the toy Story movies, i kinda avoid it for audience's mixed reactions
