Top 10 underappreciated Disney movies that didn’t deserve to flop.
I wouldn't count any released during pandemic.
You had a couple surprises. I really liked the country bears and around the world in 80 days.
It’s a shame Treasure Planet didn’t pan out in the Box Office due to Harry Potter. Treasure Planet is a classic staple of my childhood
Treasure planet came out the same day. Adam Sandler‘s eight crazy nights came out.
Treasure Planet had too many weird aliens and not enough humanoid characters.
@@Scottwilkie18 It's shocking that both 2D animated movies flopped epically despite one of the being a masterpiece that's a creative, unique, and improved take on Treasure Island and the other being a crappy adult-oriented Hanukkah-themed musical comedy.
Treasure Planet and Atlantis are the ONLY Disney classics that need live action adaptations
What if J.K. Rowling's career ending before that fierce competition for movie sales happened.
Words can’t describe how underrated Treasure Planet and The Black Cauldron are.
The Black Cauldron 🔥🔥🔥
The good news is for the Black cauldron is that Disney's going to redo the movie, but this time do the entire book series that it's based on.
Fun fact: One of the funniest things about The Black Cauldron is that it came out in theatres in 1985, but it was such a commercial failure that Disney didn't even release on VHS until 1997.
it was 1998 silly!
@@Sandlot1992The VHS was released first in the UK in 1997, but hadn't released in the US until the next year after that.
... and I own it. 'Nuff said.
@@Sandlot1992 nah it says on Wikipedia that "The Black Cauldron was first released on VHS in the United Kingdom in 1997, and in the United States on August 4, 1998, as part of the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection".
Here are some reasons why Disney's new movies flop:
Bad marketing
Releasing movies on streaming rather than theaters
Remaking their classic movies
Change the characters
Covid
Add one more: making new characters that dont quite live up to the Standards of past characters
And the writers strike
And for the genuinely good films that still bombed? Three words. Lack of taste.
Most of these new movies were targeted by right wingers for progressive themes. Check out the top 10 times companies got woke video for Disney btw
Add antagonism by Disney towards customers and fans too
You know what the saddest thing is, Disney did actually had high hops for more Treasure Planet projects with a TV series and a sequel were Jim Hawkins has love interest named Kate, teaming up with Long John Silver to stop Ironbeard, who is the main antagonist of the sequel, and he was going to be voiced by Willem Dafoe. Unfortunately, when they saw the first movie's failure at the box office, those plans were ultimately left buried.
The even sadder thing is that if the sequel were still happening back then, it would’ve been released direct-to-video.
Treasure Planet and The Black Cauldron may have been financial flops when the movies came out, but they've since become cult classics.
I love mo-cap, but Mars Needs Moms is a prime example of how NOT to do it.
I watch Mars need moms, I was like what is this movie
@@melissagrant4178 I've never seen Mars Needs Moms in full, and I am NEVER going to. The small clips I have seen are terrible.
On the plus side, at least what followed was the cancellation of the Yellow Submarine remake.
@@nathanielpatterson-rc9dq Huh.
So 11 films on a top 20 flops list were made in the last 10 years from a 90 years cinematography history. Disney is in a bad trend, needs to woke up.
John Carter isn't a bad movie at all for me
Me either. I want to see another adaptation, if not from Disney, then from some other studio
I know, right. I really enjoyed it and don't know why it flopped.
Neither is The Lone Ranger. And believe it or not, The Lone Ranger is actually my favorite Western movie EVER. Did you know that?
@@AJ-xc4qe if so, which Studio would ya think make a good adaption?
My money lean towards Ganndy Tarankovsky (i know i might've said the last name wrong, but thinking he would make an interesting adaption of such since Primal and Clone Wars.)
Same here
2013: Disney loses money on movies based on niche things (The Lone Ranger)
2023: Disney loses money on big famous IPs bought long time ago (MCU and Indiana Jones)
You know your list is off to a good start when the very first thing is a $100 million loss.
I am surprised that The Marvels didn't make it to this list with the lowest box-office performance in the whole MCU
Mars Needs Moms was pretty much the beginning of Robert Zemekis’ downfall but the Pinocchio remake contributed to tarnishing his reputation even more
Around the world in 80 days deserves better
Agreed I actually liked it
Agree. That movie was pretty decent and you can't go wrong with Jackie Chan
The Marvels? Live-Action Little Mermaid? Wish? The Eternals? Ant man 3? Solo a Star Wars Story?
May want to do a follow up video!
I liked all of those
14:44 If you ask Me, The 2023 Haunted Mansion could also be a sequel to the 2003 Haunted Mansion.
How?
The Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet and Turning Red may have bombed but i still watch them till this day. 😃
The first two were great, turning red? Nah, you're wild for that take.
You know what they say about opinions.
@@williamsummerson1204 Ik but still tho.
Fine.
@@williamsummerson1204Don’t listen to him/her. Most people on the internet can be jerks sometimes. If you enjoy Turning Red, then definitely keep enjoying it regardless of what others think.
No. 14, honestly I'm surprised that Disney are *STILL* making live-action remakes of their original animated classics anymore especially after this here
They forgot to mention the fact that it was filmed on the grounds of a concentration camp in China
I did hear some stuff that indicates they are going to starting toning it down a little.
@@disneyboy3030 Let's hope so
I feel bad for Dial of Destiny, Treasure Planet, Tomorrow Land, Turning Red, The Lone Ranger, and John Carter.
I enjoyed them alot.
You mean TURNING RED!
@@CodyFairlessLee whoops, sorry
I feel the same way about Wish.
@@sarahsims6164 yeah Wish too. I love the art style in that movie
@@bennywark3103ironically I feel that Disney Plus is improving their reputations or at least most of them. Do you feel that way.
What was Disney thinking when they released 2023 Haunted Mansion in July, instead of October? You know Halloween season, the month people want to watch scary or thrilling movies.
not every horror movie needs to be relesed in october
Then again, who knows if the 2023 Haunted Mansion would’ve fared better at the box-office if it had been released in October? There’s a likely chance it still would’ve flopped regardless.
It was more that it was same time as Barbie. Sad thing was I really enjoyed it…thought it was great. Shame it lost money I was hoping broke even
@@jwaceHocas Pocas also suffered the same fate years ago.
Treasure Planet and The Black Cauldron are both AMAZING. Shame that they’re considered flops
Turning Red would have done better if Disney released the movie in theaters this same year instead of two years later. Thanks a lot, Disney + !
Same can be said for Soul and Luca!
Can we not use the box office results to to justify why a movie is good there’s also bad movies like became massive hits, but are not forgotten there have been good movies that became massive hits like Scott Pilgrim vs the world, pick him up box office bomb back then but now that movie is highly beloved
Would have done better if it wasn’t so gay too
You have to consider also the COVID-19 Pandemic on that year though...
COVID19! When you fail to factor that in...
I still say there's something fishy about the John Carter movie. It's being said that Disney spent a bunch of money on advertising but I remember thinking back in the day "they didn't advertise this movie very well." I think Disney purposefully bombed it for some reason.
It failed because it tried to please the OG ERB fan base while "dumbing down" the source material to attract a modern audience.
2023 was Disney’s box office disaster. 6 of the 9 major features failed to make profit due to franchise fatigue, identity politics and higher ticket prices.
Well said now that watch mojo is getting into it
I agree with franchise fatigue and higher ticket prices, but "identity politics" is BS dog whistle for "too much "other people" representation". Every Disney product, particularly since its 90s renaissance hits on identity politics/wider range of representation. It's a Small World, and all. And many many flops on this list outside of 2023 had no overt "identity politics" angles. While quite a few hits (like Encanto, animated Mulan, etc) were purely "identity politics" and/or specifically cultural flicks. I'm almost shocked you didn't say "woke" like most ppl do, lol.
Disney made money hand over fist on stories they stole from others. Cinderella, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Jungle Book, Tangled, The Lion King, I could go on, were other people's ideas, books, and characters that Disney "perfected" and made family friendly with happy endings. Then they procured Marvel, Star Wars, and other IPs that already had lore and followers. When it came time to produce original content, results varied greatly. When they went back to the tried & true remake well, much like recycled water, no one's falling over themselves to partake. Not only is there franchise fatigue but also choice paralysis. With the ridiculous number of subscription platforms with "must see" titles and finite number of hours in a day, how much we really want but can't find the time to watch a film doesn't quantity in box office or whatever numbers these companies use to count views.
I do wonder why WatchMojo (sorry) didn’t mention Disney’s Wish. I miss guided lie and a disrespectful part for Walter Disney’s UNINTENTIONAL Legacy. He would not be happy with this, at all!
Their 💯 anniversary wasn’t a good time last year.
Haunted mansion, Wish, Elemental, The Marvels and Indiana Jones flopped, Little Mermaid (I think) and GOTG 3 didn't, what were the other 2 movies?
A wrinkle in time pissed me off, they murdered the source material
I love how they tried to polish that turd the same way they did with 'The Marvels', "Highest grossing movie by a black female director..." 😆
@@och70 right
Maybe you could make a better adaptation? Love to see a fan of the book make a better film adaptation than the previous adaptations.
@@och70subscribed to Tucker Carlson
555: You ignored the fact that Ming-Na Wen made a cameo in 2020’s Mulan
I am going to tell my kids that Buzz Lightyear of star command is Lightyear
What also hurt Treasure Planet was Titan A.E. (2000) and Atlantis (2001) coming before it. The trailer made people feel like they already watched it twice.
2004s "Around the World in 80 Days" is the prime example of a movie that underestimates people's intelligence with a mean-spirited story caused by lazy writing
Treasure Planet bombed because of the when it was released in the year. The fact of the matter is that it would have done a hell of a lot better in the box office if it had been released in the summer.
Or if they waited a year later to release it in February.
@@hunterolaughlin actually, that likely would have still caused problems. Certain types of movies are popular for certain times of the year. Treasure Planet would fall into the category similarly to Pirates of the Caribbean. Adventure, but in this case, with Sci-fi.
@@marckempe2143 Good point.
Pretty impressive how many of those flops have been within the past 5 years. Disney really has lost their mojo.
It’s not just the movie itself being underrated or a bomb but it’s the princess. Eilonwy is considered as Disney’s Forgotten Princess since she’s in between The Silver Age and The Disney Renaissance
Kid Danger: *wearing his big trucker pup outfit* not to mention that the live action Mulan DOESN'T have ANY songs! *slaps his face with his hoof* dishonor on the live action Mulan move!
Well... I remember hearing from someone on Tumblr that he read that they wanted to make the remake a more faithful adaptation of the original Legend of Mulan the original animated film was based on.
Wish was a box office bomb
You got that right!
I'm surprised it wasn't here.
@@annafowdy Me too, I guess they can't squeeze in everything.
Not as bad as the the ones on the list though…didn’t it make 100 mill or so? That’s half its budget and there was reduced marketing for it…
@@jwace It was terrible, and Asha is probably the worst Disney heroine. She ruined Magnifico's perfect utopia
Disney ruined Artemis Fowl... I will never forgive them lol
If they would go and release that thing into theaters it’s a guaranteed box office flop
Don't forget that the author of the book approved the changes Disney made so don't blame Disney only
@@Barricade379 Good point!
@@daverybrown3647I do wonder why he approved them.
@disneyboy3030 who knows. Maybe he was pressured into by the Disney folks. Maybe he was offered a substantial amount to approve the changes. People's integrity becomes very gray when money is involved 🤷🏿♂️
I think live action movies or a mini series about the Prydian series would do better than a cartoon.
Just stay closer to the story, and not a huge budget would make it good and sucessful.
Isn't amazing that Disney has ownership of some of the most beloved IP's in entertainment, and has endless amounts of money and they still manage to ruin most things they touch these days.
I’ve seen John Carter 10 times and have enjoyed it every single time
I love Turning Red. Gave myself the theater treatment at home; popcorn, lemonade and M&M’s
I've seen most movies from Pixar Animation Studios, but I've yet to catch this one.Given Pixars' track record of turning out films with stories that both make you laugh and pull at the heart strings,I'm curious as to how this ended up on this list.Maybe the cash machine that is Disney wanted more from one of its 'acquisitions'.
Regarding Mulan, you “forgot” about the controversy surrounding the abuse, torture, enslavement, and organ harvesting of the Uyghurs by the Chinese…
To be honest, I didn’t know these movies were bombs in the box office. All I know is I love Disney and I love the fun and action and magic.
What can I say? Nothing ruins my childhood
This shows how complacency, studio meddling, and checking boxes backfires in the long run
Ignoring merit based hiring for diversity checkboxes is never a good strategy for finding directors, writers, producers, or any of the other important creative roles.
@@och70 subscribed to Tucker Carlson
Huh. Where's Wish. I hear it flopped so hard and its competition did so well, it gave Grace Randolph an existential crisis.
I guess they can't squeeze in everything.
It didn’t flop as bad as these
I don't care what critics say, Alamo is a real Gem - great movie from A to Z, excellent effort with awesome actors and tremendous battle scenes
Thank you!
I whole heartedly agree.
I whole heartedly agree.
13th warrior was 🔥 and still is watchable
I missed it completely during its theatrical run, watched it for the first time just a couple years ago, I thought it was a solid movie.
I enjoy it too, but I did not know it was part of Disney, this is a shocking surprise.
It was a great movie, don't care what anyone else thinks.
*sees the title*
Wonder how many of these are from the last decade or so?
POST VIEW EDIT: Wow, not surprised to see many of these movies here. I am surprised to see nothing of Disney Star Wars/Marvel on this list though.
I actually enjoyed all the movies except for Newies, A Wrinkle in Time, The New Mutants, Around the World in 80 days, Jungle Cruise, The Alamo, The 13th Warrior, and The Black Cauldron
Some of them are Underrated
Really sad with Haunted Mansion, I personally really enjoyed it. It was exactly what I was looking for at the time, a spooky fun time with a few genuine surprises (including an incredible part from Jared Leto!)
I will never forgive Katzenberg for sabotaging "The Rescuers Down Under." He was gunning for it before it even hit it theaters.
I don't know alot about the development of it.
Wish should also be on the list!
What about the good dinosaur? Consider the movie became the first box office bomb before lightyear
Ironically, I completely forgot about The Alamo
Top 20 Times Disney went TOO FAR.
Yes
Good Idea for a list!
I think a list for top 10 controversial Disney movies would also be a great idea for a video.
Underrated or not, I enjoyed 2023’s The Haunted Mansion
The video mentions "cultural representation" a few times. That alone explains some of the flops.
As soon as you hear the cast, director, etc., talking about a new project and that's their main focus, instead of what the movie is actually about, you can see the failure coming.
Was waiting to see if some right wing asshole would comment here…glad to see its very far down the list. I can’t wait to see Snow White with Zegler…hell I might buy out whole shows just to piss people like you off 😀
You two trollls are so clueless
No it doesnt
@@och70subscribed to Tucker Carlson
Just because a movie flops doesn't make it an absolute failure. Treasure Planet and Turning Red are proof of that
I didn’t see Mars Needs Moms in theaters but instead on DVD from RedBox. Didn’t get me into it.
I love Jungle Cruise. My dad loved the ride at Disneyland and I enjoyed the movie
The Black Cauldron was so well made and beautiful. It amazed and terrified me as a kid
Around the world in 80 days was dope, Jackie Chan is GOAT
Biggest confusing thing with Lightyear is....we already SAW the "actual" Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 2, in the opening sequence. And it looks so different. Just look at how Zurg appears there and how he is in Lightyear.
Honestly, as impossible as it is, I think it would have been MUCH better to just have a very-late reboot of the "Of Star Command" cartoon.
One of my favorite Live-Action Disney movies of all time is Newsies. I first saw it as a Broadway Show when I was a kid and when I found out it was a movie, watched it. I LOVED IT! I get why it failed at the time but I have always loved it and always enjoy re-watching it. Also as a kid I loved the Black Cauldron and it was one of the most watched for me growing up. My mom bought it when it came out on VHS in 1997.
"The Black Cauldron" totally deserves a live-action remake
No, no live action. I like The Black Cauldron but a live action version of it would just ruin it entirely
I keep hearing this plenty agree, which yeah, make it darker and more gritty along the line, especially from the books.
No no God please no just stop these live-action remakes
🎖
Careful what you wish for... a Disney remake means a girlboss protagonist and diversity to the point of excluding Euro Americans...
Ironic for The Black Cauldron being Number 5. Released in 1985 and it’s Number 5
I saw the Lone Ranger in a movie theater, and I remember people were laughing at it because it was so bad it was funny.
I can't believe you didn't mention how little they advertised for Treasure Planet. It was a passion project of Ron Clements and John Musker after they made multiple films mandated by Disney they were allowed to make Treasure Planet. Disney sunk it on purpose.
The newest Haunted Mansion movie was actually very good. I also liked Newsies, John Carter and I remember liking the 13th Warrior, but it was quite some time ago that I saw it.
Treasure planet is my favorite Disney movie and they were ahead of their time
Strange World was a great movie and the protagonist’s preference had NOTHING to do with the plot and was lightly referenced. Well written movie that had elements of a family drama
The Black Cauldron was one I’d seen upon its release. I wondered why it wasn’t released until 1998. It’s also the first Disney film with a PG rating.
Had Gigantic been a thing with Disney, I think it would have been gigantic(no pun intended)at the box office. Having said that, I think Disney’s best days are well behind them.
Yeah, Bob iger has lived long enough to become a villain, at least finacially😂
@@chheinrich8486 Right. Anyways, Skydance Animation is doing Gigantic now.
I'm not much of an optimist, but I'm still holding onto the hope that they'll eventually turn things around.
@@nathanielpatterson-rc9dqThey will once Bob Iger is quickly replaced with my two picks for Disney’s next co-CEOs: Alan Bergman and Dana Walden.
I would've liked to see that movie, it would've been nice to have another giant girl in the Disney family, besides Alice.
Treasure Planet has such a good following behind it nowadays that with all the live action remakes, they're wanting Disney to remake it into one. It deserves much more praise than it got back then
Treasure planet is a masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says. The fact that it wasn't a box office success is that it was released the same year as Star Wars: Attack of the clones, Harry Potter the chamber of secrets and also the first Spiderman movie.
Can you do top 20 Biggest Disney Movie Smashes?
Strange World is Disney’s 61st animated movie and it’s the first Disney movie I saw by myself. I know it’s not the best but it’s a fun ride
"Turning Red" is so good!
also, these are perfect examples of why Disney does remakes and sequels so often...they know what will guarantee to bring them money
Until they don't.
I like Treasure Planet. It's so underrated in my opinion.
Even if some of them blew up in people’s faces, they’re still remembered and appreciated through cult followings..
Maybe in the past. But a lot of people don’t care for the current thing that Disney is nowadays.
Treasure Planet was that movie. So underrated, one of Disney's best
I actually love Around The World In 80 Days. It's funny and full of heart. ❤
It was a decent film tbh
I loved this one. It was a lot of fun and it made me want to read the book
My highschool journalism class watched Newsies. Pretty good musical.
🎖
I almost expect The Hunchback of Notre Dame to be on this list.
I work in a movie theater. Strange World was put out to die. From my perspective (and not representing any company I may or may not work for or have been employed by) Disney had ZERO faith in that movie. Once backlash started happening in the months before release they pulled the drag chute. The opening weekend came and there was no noticable bump in ticket sales for the location I was working at. No one cared about it. Even families coming in looking for something to watch didn't realize it was out and only bought tickets if they decided nothing else was worth it. Strange World probably would have fared better as a "straight to VHS" movie.
For Seeing Red, that's a hard one to pin down. Theatrical releases survive on having RELATIVELY broad appeal. Red has a pretty specific audience: young asian girls within the first two generations of immigration to the US. Yes, other people can enjoy it, but the story is written from the perspective of an asian girl in a more traditional immigrant family which is educational, but not something that many outside of that demographic group can identify with. I'm not going to say it shouldn't have been made, but at the same time I'm not surprised it didn't do better. Even if it had better luck with its original theatrical release (no pandemic) I don't think it would have made much more.
Lone Ranger was SUCH a disappointment. I wish they made better choices with the script, casting, and direction. I remember watching the black and white Lone Ranger at my grandparents house when I was a little kid and I loved it. I had such high hopes for the movie, but it was...just...awful. I even felt excitement when they started playing the William Tell Overture at the big fight scene, but I was still let down. Lone Ranger is about a man who's family is killed and he gets "revenge" by being a law man and bringing people to justice and refusing to shoot to kill. His whole thing about using silver bullets was that the silver won't cause a gunshot wound to fester with disease or lead poisoning (questionable science, but I could suspend disbelief). I was also hoping for a better treatment of Tanto, but that was...oof. That was a special kind of poor taste. I hope someone does a new Lone Ranger and tries to capture the pure hearted spirit of the original and not the schlock of the reboot.
Heres something I heard. I heard that for the Mulan remake they wanted to stick mostly closer to the original Legned of Mulan.
I’m Still Here.
-Song from Treasure Planet and I Love It!!!!!
I must be part of The Black Cauldron's cult following. I'm glad I made plenty of fan art last year.
Turning Red doesn’t necessarily count because it did make its money back from Disney plus since it was the 2nd most streamed movie of 2022. It’s a merchandise queen too! For Mulan (2020) and Jungle Cruise, their releases were extremely complicated
Despite box Office bombs, is there anyone who like these movies, because i do especially treasure planet.
Lots of these are recent which isn’t a surprise at all. Nowadays, Disney just craps out shit because they think audiences will just flock to the Disney name.
_Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny_ looks tame compared to _John Carter._
Wonder why these aren't on the list:
.West Side Story (2021)
.Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
.Wish (2023)
.The Haunted Mansion (2003)
.Brother Bear (2003)
Funny! My two favorite on this list is #2 and #1.
Turning Red was really good.
Strange World and Lightyear are underrated sci fi adventure films.
You and the people that like your comment are atroviously wrong
@@coletrainhetrickit's their opinions.
What's the difference between Texans & Disney?
Texans say, "Remember The Alamo!"
And Disney says, "...well..."
Newsies was AMAZING. Still holds up today ❤️
To this day, I swear Mars Needs Moms was an intentional box office bomb. Disney wanted to close ImageMovers Digital but needed a reason. So what did Disney do? They released a $150 million film during the dead period (January-March). Had Disney released Mars Needs Moms in summer or Thanksgiving, the film would have performed better.
Turning Red didn't get a cinema release here in Britain. Only got to it on dvd. I liked it. But the former would have been a factor in worldwide takings. Lightyear did come to cinemas. I saw it there. At one point during I heard a child's voice near the back pipe up 'that isn't funny.' Which speaks volumes.
I don’t get how they say John Carter’s story had no originality when the books were the blue print to Dune, Superman, Flash Gordon, and Star Wars that came after it but ok… I guess 😅 either way it was a good movie adaption of the book. It was just released at the wrong time and promoted badly.
