So Primus, if you want the best drummer ever (this guy) who's also a very cool person (also this guy), sorry you never saw this and thus never had the chance to welcome the best drummer ever (this guy) into the band
Drummer here: great take dude. Couple pieces of constructive criticism. The snare rings way too much to just have the camera mic. It drowns out the kick. If you could, at last mic up your kick bc even though it is audible, it isn't really that easy to hear it. Adding another camera for your foot would make it for a wider audience to see what you're doing and might help you get more traction spreading the video around. Especially the heavy part in this song; doing that w a single kick is not easy, and since you're putting yourself out there, might as well strut your stuff.
Thanks a lot for the comment and compliments! My kit is miced (BD, SN, toms, 2 OH and a shitty room mic for artificial reverb), but I'm a bit of an eternal tinkerer when it comes to mixing. Every time I record drums I tend to shift frequencies around, try out different volumes, EQ's and compressions, not always quite hitting the mark. I kind of have an aversion for dialing in a modern "standard sound", and prefer quite thin and airy sounds. I'm also a snare fetishist, meaning it's drowning out the kick when I'm at the peak of my snare ping boner lol. And yeah there really wasn't a good reason for not including a view of my foot in this take, my camera is attached to a ceiling pipe with blu-tack and the kick foot was actually visible in the shot in earlier takes, but the cam got nudged around in between takes. But that's all on brand for me, been making bare-minimum quality covers since 2006 lol
Well I'm a drummer but also I'm apparently blind. Everything is very obviously mic'ed up and for some reason I just didnt notice. Maybe I was just too focused on the song bc I also love playing it as well. Anyways, great cover, I respect going against the grain as far as drum tone goes. I do think it would be cool to have another kick cam in a tough song like this. But overall great playing man @@finowa
So Primus, if you want a guy (Frans) to play the drums in your band, make sure that guy sold a really cool Charvel Model 3 to some dude (me) that looks very similar to the Model 5 that Aki Laeaekkoelae used to play (he's also a very cool dudeguy).
For the lay person like me, having direct view of the kick and fancy footwork pounding it is pretty much the only way I can understand what's actually happening. I think watching drummers is completely captivating when I can see the sticks AND the kicks. I'm sure that all ye fluent drummers understand exactly what's happening that isn't directly visible here and it all makes sense etc. so no criticism intended here. Just prefacing my humble request that someday you put a cam on the kicks too for my n00blet viewing enjoyment. ;) Great song, btw! :)
Oh for sure, I wish the foot was visible. It was in some of the other takes I recorded, but nudging the camera (which is attached to a pipe with blu-tack lol) around in between recording reframed the shot like thus. Man now I really wish we could see that I don't have a double pedal 😭 But thanks a bunch for your comment!
Thanks a lot brudder!! Yeah snare pings aren't for everyone, I'm a sucker for a good ringing snare though. I'm not a huge fan of the Black Suede head I'm currently using, it doesn't lend itself to the kind of ring I'm looking for... Or then I just need to figure it out haha. Also the snare mic's aim was a little off, picking up a bit too much of the ringing. Thanks again!
@@Andrew_Sowala haha, a little bit of both. I've always loved a ringing snare, but in this vid the snare mic was at an angle where it was pointing at the rim a little too much, instead of straight down at the head, capturing that extra ring. But honestly I don't mind, I hate dry snares 😄
Wow man, the kick work in this one with a single pedal is INSANE! Propsss

This is all very true! Amazing!
Dog. Will. Hunt.
Spectacular take, and best of luck, brother!

Primus here's your guy!
I would also accept the role of a second guitarist to counter Ler's perfect guitar parts with absolutely mundane and generic garbage playing

Can personally confirm some of this to be true 👏
On se vaan kova🎉
Your foot is insane man 🦶
It's 50% leg twitch, 50% luck 😅

@@jackstoner5463 thank you!!
Awesome chops dude!! Just gotta get that snare ring under control though, maybe try a smaller higher pitched snare too.

I'm not a drummer so forgive my ignorance but what's the deal with the snare? Is it mic'd up weird or is that sound intentional? 😬
