- The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds kicked off their 2021 airshow season in Cocoa Beach, Florida April 17-18, debuting a new demonstration to the public for the first time in nearly 40 years; the last time being 1983 when the team transitioned to the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
Prior to that, the only time the team changed the demo was when the team was established in 1953 and had to build a 15 minute show from scratch.

I should have been born a guy! My whole life I have been thrilled beyond everything at the sight of a jet...even sitting on the ground. To see them fly is like euphoria to me. I graduated in 1960 and no female pilots. Airforce nurse or office work available. Now the sky is the limit for ladies. Oh, How I love to see them.....cant imagine to fly one and own the sky at 700 mph. These men and woman are heroes every time they go up....guard our country and have secured our continued freedom. Thank you USAF. ✈✈✈✈✈✈

I remember in the early 70’s when I was 9 and 10 years old, the Thunderbirds flew the F-4 Phantom. Those were the first Thunderbirds shows that I watched. I’ve been hooked ever since. These pilots are amazing.
This is crazy. It is impossible with my understanding. I am so proud of those freedom keepers.

Awesome as always. Have seen them 3 times 2017 & 2019 at Nellis Afb for their homecoming and the first time in 1985 (???) at Soesterberg Afb, The Netherlands. My hometown.

I lived in Warner Robin's. Ga. From 1952 until 1970, home of Robin's AFB. The Thunderbirds put on air shows in our town. They flew over our house. Sometimes they flew so low you could see the pilots and they would wave at you.

That last maneuver is going to hurt a lot of ears, but that is so freaking awesome to see the burners lit.

They were just in Kansas City with the Blue Angels on the 4th of July. It was truly an amazing show. I loved it.
A gimbal stabilizer would do wonders for your videography!

This is totally awesome! If I am able, I am going to their next performance at this venue, meaning in Cocoa Beach. I have never seen an air show performed over the ocean, only at military bases on land. I will check their schedule to find out when they will appear and perform here so I can make it there. If they have already done it this year, then there will be next year, come hell or high water!

The sound of Freedom, nice camera work Mike, I have a special connection with one of the pilots, she is is my sister in-law, Major Michelle "MACE" Curran, Mace flies the #5 lead solo and is currently the only female pilot flying with the Thunderbirds......
I can only imagine what its like being the husband of a Thunderbirds pilot. I assume he's very proud of her accomplishments.
We all are, she has worked very hard to get where she is now.

Since she is lead solo, she is T-bird 5. what's cool about 5 is that the number on her flight suit and on the jet are upside down since lead solo spends so much of their time upside down during the show.
MACE is an awesome ambassador for the AF and the Thunderbirds.

What mic do you use?
What's with the centerline tank on the F-16 in the slot position? I've seen this in several 2021 T-birds videos but never saw them carry that in the past.
The Thunderbirds often use an F-16D as their "slot machine" in the #4 position. The D-model has 2 seats and is therefore missing one fuel tank that the single-seat C models have. For that reason, they hang a centerline fuel tank on the D-model, in order to give it the same fuel endurance that the other jets in the formation. The squadron rosters 2-3 of these D-model jets, which are used extensively during the training season. Putting one of them in the slot position allows these airplanes to be used in the actual show. It also provides a seat for a distinguished visitor (DV) during practices. Such a DV would virtually always be a senior military aviator (Wing Commander, etc.), not a civilian reporter or celebrity. The latter group of folks are only flown single-ship....never during a show or full-up practice.

Are these beach airshows free...or to you still have to pay??
It depends. Most beach-front shows that I have been to are free. Shows at military bases are also typically free. It is only the shows that have civilian or business sponsors that charge for admission. Those shows also have to reimburse Uncle Sam for the team's appearance, so they have costs to recover. They pay something like a $6,000 per day demonstration fee (which is far less than what the show actually costs) and they have to provide a ton of hotel rooms, rental cars, etc. to house the team and help them get around for the whole weekend.
What is the centerline pod on the slot guy for? Have never seen that before?
Centerline fuel tank. Since he is flying a two-seater, it carries less fuel than the single seat jets.

Not really sure how this is 'new'. It looks like the same maneuvers in just a slightly different order.
It is, but they nixed about 6 maneuvers, and thrown in 2 new ones in the Low and Flat Shows (the Stinger-Break Cross, and the Delta 360), It's supposed more action-packed though, and lighter on the Jet's gas.

Do photography professionals not consider stabilizers a key element of their own equipment? This in unwatchable. I'm thinking this can't be representative of the photographer skillset...probably didn't have the right equipment or was caught off-guard by the opportunity?
Hi Jeff. Yes I'm a photographer & writer as a FT job covering aviation & spaceflight. I'm just now diving more into video and yes I have a stabilizer for DSLR videography. This however was shot on a camcorder & was not like some paid assignment, so I didn't care to buy a gimbal for a borrowed camcorder. I appreciate your respectful comment. Pls feel free to visit my portfolio to see my actual professional photography. You'll see that you're right, this video is not representative of what I do at all. Rest assured tho I have some amazing opportunities coming and the footage will be spectacular & smooth

That was nice... for Air Force standards. It appears Navy tolerances are tighter. Not everyone can be a "boat" pilot.
ah yes, I love our missions over the AOR when the amazing "boat" pilots all show up on the tanker at once, without talking to anyone and not listening to a damn thing AWACS tells them. Enjoy your life 10 to a room for 10 months while we have our own racks and don't have wake up to the sight of water every day.
It should be noted that it's the senior leadership of each service that decides the formation standards and which maneuvers will be done. The Air Force has always been more conservative than the Navy in that regard.

Growing up as a child I loved this group. Later as I grew up,I met them. Now I know they are different people now, but when I did meet the latest group,I was disappointed. Thus group of guys is the most stuck up people I have ever encountered. It was like meeting the Kardashians. Never ever again will or my family feel the same about this group. I understand the are pilots, but even these guys should act great full and humble. Not like their 💩 don't stink.

Some of the least proficient flying I've seen in a demo team. Dangerous. And dumbass flying around with his speed brakes open. Its time to hang this idea up. It was always been iffy if its worth the billions wasted, but with our pilots so out of practice, its just a bad joke.

they are already flying the newest version of the F16 (that the US has anyway) There is nothing to transition to, they are as hell aren't wasting F22's or F35's on a demo team
