Thanks very much. Your very right about getting the song right, Quo have had bad press throughout their careers for being so simplistic, when in fact their stuff is very difficult to get right. Thanks again, and keep on rockin'
I am a guitar veteran of 8 weeks now and have looked all over UA-cam for lessons. Yours are very good but I find it hard to know where you have your fingers during changes. I'm spending most of my time pausing and rewinding to work it out - probably my fault with being so new. If you do any more videos please can you spend a little more time explaining your fingering. Keep up the good work, it is really appreciated.
Thanks so much for this Paul - Quo aint easy to get right. Your vids rival Marty Schwartz for accuracy! Fab when you say "missed it" (very easy to do that due to Parfitt's precise picking style). You also mention Rick uses heavier strings on his Telecaster which I didn't know. (It might be somewhere on the Net which string gauge, amp and Telecaster Rick does use). Without knowing all that... The Real Quo Sound remains elusive.
In fact, I'm gonna be a Guitarnerd and mention some of the best rock musicians in the world have used Dropped D including Keith Richards and The Beatles. I also happen to know Keith uses custom strings just as Rick does. Rick uses all the exciting potential of a Telecaster in Whatever You Want. It's a masterpiece.
Heh Heh - Well, if we're talkin' about the British Tabloid Press (which of course we are) who envy and admire rock musicians at the same time, I'd like to see them figure out a blues riff, using dropped D Tuning, played in fast 4/4 with hammer-ons and pull-offs demanding a precise pick action. I believe Whatever You Want features all these... Keep on rockin? Hell yeah! And I swear I saw Elvis down the chipshop last Tuesday... [smile]
Thanks very much for your nice comment. What I do to mute the D string is use a combination of palm muting, deadening it with the heel of my picking hand, or I use the thumb of my fretting hand to rest on the open D. Just enough to deaden the string, but not enough to sound the note. Its really a matter of experimenting and seeing what works. Never give up though. \m/ Rock on!!
great vid once again..love the quo.Of course there is only 1 quintessential quo song to learn .."Dont waste my time" off the piledriver album. Over to you sir. Great lessons.
Thank you for that great lesson. By far the best Quo Lessons on UA-cam. But ive got one question. After the D shuffle in the beginning, on the open A shuffle, how does Rick Parfitt the low D string ? I just cant get it not to ring
Great video, hope you don't mind me making a small criticism, but the video is a bit quiet, I don't know if that's just my laptop though, but again, great video :D
Hi just started to learn the guitar. (At 56) And enjoying your videos. But what equipment are you using to get that chugga chugga sound? I have squier telecaster and a blackstar fly 3 amp but I can't get that authentic sound.
@skodalona I have one of those - a great little practice amp, but I use a 15W practice amp at home and the Blackstar only for travelling. I don't think it has enough punch to get close to the authentic Quo sound. The best I can get from it for Quo is by cranking the gain up to maximum, the volume down to about a quarter (the little white dash pointing left), and the guitar volume up high, with the guitar tone around six. The amp EQ can be fiddled with, but that's a matter of trial and error. I have mine in the middle (line pointing straight up). Hope this helps!
Thanks@@JamesKingsilentlife will give it a go soon. Recently got a Vox Amplug 2, AC30 to get the chorus effect on the introduction to WYW. It works really well, especially fed through the Blackstar Fly 3, sounds close enough to the original without spending too much money on pedals.
Great lesson!! Keep up the good work.
Ron, The Netherlands.

found this very good to learn
Absolutely brilliant, what settings to get the tone so close, do you use a pedal
Hiya, thanks for your nice comment. It was done with a zoom pedal which I no longer have. I think my kitchens acoustics helped. ❤️
Good lesson, seemed fitting to dust of my guitar and learn a bit of quo today...
Thanks very much for the feedback. I am about to record some new videos and will definitely try to be clearer.
Rock On!
Hi Nigel
I am using a zoom g2 pedal and a chorus setting. I cant be anymore specific than that as I just had a mess about with the buttons. ;-)
great vid once again..love the quo.Of course there is only 1 quintessential quo song to learn .."Dont waste my time" off the piledriver album.
Over to you sir.
