UpFront - Arena: Is the ICC biased against African countries?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- The International Criminal Court (ICC) was set up to prosecute war criminals and human rights violators, who proponents argue would otherwise go free.
In recent months, however, African countries have threatened to pull out, citing what they consider a bias against the continent.
Critics point to the fact that of the nine countries the ICC has opened inquiries into, eight are in Africa.
So, is the ICC obsessed with targeting only African countries? And, just how effective is the court?
In the Arena, Luis Moreno Ocampo, the first chief prosecutor of the ICC, debates with Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Uganda's Makerere University and one of the strongest critics of the court.

Man this journalist is golden. he deserves an award.
Noel Lyle I know LOL I've listen to him do so many interviews and he can get really intense he was interviewing the foreign minister of Kenya this lady and the interview was just wild
He should learn to ask a question and listen for the answer..
"The ICC promised us rule of law. The test of rule of law is that it should apply to everybody, particularly the most powerful. When rule of law does not apply to the most powerful, then it is not rule of law, it is warlordism, it is the rule of the powerful." (Mamdani)... Nothing to add.
@@umarikram6913 I think you missed Mamdani's point when he said that the Head of states must first be impeached before he can be persecuted as an individual. What he is trying to argue is that the Western powers would just prosecute individuals AS THE HEAD OF STATES whereas it is clearly stated in ICC clause that ICC would prosecute individuals not the state. However, by prosecuting the head of state, the ICC was perceived as prosecuting the state.
@@umarikram6913 I think you really need to rewatch the video again and think about what he is trying to argue. Mamdani argues that it is important for the equal application of the rule of law on every countries and states but the reality is that the ICC is biased against the African states as it is a tool for Western powers to spread their ideology. Essentially, Mamdani is suggesting that the same rule of law will not be applied the same to any western countries upholding western ideals as it did to Africian or asian countries. You should learn english before saying something dumb.
O Campos needs subtitles and Al Jazeera needs an unbiased anchorman
A great discussion. Enjoyed watching it and learnt a lot from it!
The facts speak for themselves
Not even why unthinkingly,
What is unthinkingly
Seems like Ocampo doesn't respect the simple rule of conversations: you speak I listen, I speak you listen. Do you really expect him to obey any other rule of law?
the strong may do as he wish, the weak must suffer as he must
Victims have no sides

At 1200 hrs
Then you saw me you cut off the lights
This was not an interview it was an attempt by the host of the show to set the ICC up as wrong . The fact remains that the ICC have helped significantly in the global aim of holding criminal leaders of state accountable around the world . Throughout the interview the host cut off the ICC representative and allowed the opposition more air time showing his bias against the ICC clearly. This 'interview' was clearly bias and thus ineffective.
What about the leaders of powerful countries who committed crimes in their countries or against other countries or nations and violated the international laws??
Ok karen
