Nice tent !!! Great job !!! The only thing it do differently is if I have some duck tape I'd cut small pieces off, pre hole it in the middle, put it on my tarp front and back (and top & bottom of your tarp) where I know the holes in the tarp will be, then stake it down. That added little duck tape (above & underneath) will help protect your tarp from ripping. Then once you know where your stick will go, mark it off, take your duck tape, make a small square say 5 inches, put a few layers of duck tape on your square, one square on the bottom, one on top, where your stick goes, (even through you'll pad it) just for added protection. Of course you don't 'have' to do that but it would make your tarp last longer in the long run. 👍😎 Want a really cool suggestion? Cut a length strip of duck tap, put say four layers on top of each other, the top and bottom layer have the sticky part covered up. When you go to bed, you put that strip down at the entrence, then smear some Vicks Rub on it and mosquitos hate the smell of vicks and they'll be alot less likely to come into your tent and bite.😁
I watched the video to get a trick for not ripping the plastic that I'm going to use. Not going to make a tent, but a shelter for my bag and clothes when I'm working in a plot of land.
I really like this style setup. I saw your buddy Shawn (Corporals Corner) do a similar configuration with a slightly different stakeout. Good stuff man, thanks for sharing.
Great idea on using the tarp to make a ⛺ I've seen other survivalist utilizing this method. Mr Shawn Kelly uses these tarp tying methods, excellent job sir. Enjoy the page.
Tarps are one of my must carry items anywhere, I even have one in my vehicle kit in case of emergencies. They're just so useful and versatile . I don't have an oilcloth tarp (yet), but this configuration works fine with an Aqua tarp or a lightweight one. If you're tent/hammock/stealth camping they're great to have.
Really like this. I usually go with a basic A-frame with my 10x10, but this is great if you need a freestanding. Also looks like it would protect you from rain and wind a lot better.
I've done something like this before, but used the plate from a mess kit on top of the stick. Also ended up placing rocks and logs around the bottom to help keep the wind from blowing through. Had a second smaller tarp for a door. Thanks for the vid, Man.
I've been wondering about the door. Quite nice during heavy rain. Especially when the wind changes direction. I have a very light weight poncho that works ok. ... but something made to fit and packed with the tarp seems like a good idea.
@@cautious1343 You can close the front by bringing those 2 "Wings" together at the front, so the opening gets a lot smaller. The rest you can close by putting your backpack with the rain cover attatched from the inside into the opening.
Awesome informative video Dan!!! I want to make an oil cloth tarp . I have watched your videos when you made one of yours . Thank you for posting Dan. Take care and stay safe my friend!!
Dan, you are my favorite bushcraft instructor. You know how to teach the skills using visual and physical descriptions that help me to learn. Take the Truckers knot video. I still use all your little visual and physical cues to this day. I always forgot little things in tying this knot, but when I remember back to how you taught it, it always comes back to me. Thanks.
@@johnygoodman6659 Trust me, I know. Big purchases like that usually take me a while to validate to myself. I had been sitting on buying that thing for about 6 months before I pulled the trigger. Now that I have it though, the high quality tarp made it worth it in the end.
Tried this shelter after watching this video, had a big storm blow in, with the back of the shelter facing into the wind it held up great in really strong gusting wind 👍
My go to shelter. I also carry a plastic sheet to lay as a floor. There's another tarp config that sleeps 2 that has a floor in it but plastic sheets come in handy in so many ways
I like your setup better than some others which give a little less room in which they take the one loop from the corner from each side in the back and the fold those corners under .
This is my favorite tarp/tent setup. Sets up in minutes. Just need some flat ground and 7 stakes. I wonder why the contestants in Alone season 9 didn't use this configuration when bad weather was moving in on them when they first arrived.
Thanks, Dan! That's awesome. Must ask you:. Unless I custom make this 10x10 tarp .. where can I buy one just like yours (complete with loops for staking it down)? Thanks.
Thanks I’m just getting into tarping. Can you show one were you have a closure on the front as week for bad weather? Or will i find on if I search your other videos?
Bloody good tarp design 👍👍😁 There is a little 1mtr x 1mtr tarp on the market [I think it’s called the magic carpet] that is perfect for fitting at the front so you can add it to this design as a door.
You can close the front by bringing those 2 "Wings" together at the front, so the opening gets a lot smaller. The rest you can close by putting your backpack with the rain cover attatched from the inside into the opening.
A tarp pitch can be the best 4 season shelter. It has to go tight to the ground on all sides and have a wood stove inside if it is going to be any good I a winter blizzard. The whole outfit cannot weigh more than 4 lbs. if backpackers are going to use it. A 10’x10’ tarp only needs to be pegged on the 4 corners with as many pegs as it takes to be secure in any wind. No grommets are needed. It has space for 2 cooking or 4 sleeping. The chimney can serve as a corner pole. All sides can be raised forming an umbrella to cool off, heat from the stove or summer sun.
If you move your rear most pegs to the next tab in,you can fold the loose bit in under the back and use it as a ground sheet,,also you can buy bits to make an A frame,or tie 2 bits together, or use a telescopic hiking pole,

Does duct tape stick to oilcloth?

Protect the tip of the pole with an empty aluminum soda can. Works great.
This is one of the best things I have seen in 25 years of fieldcraft lol thanks

Your 10x10 oilcloth tarp is a very well thought out product. Making me consider even buying one! Great tarp pitch set up idea, too.
Growing up my buddies and I use to do this it was fun. And we never caused any trouble !!!

Something this simple seems like magic I can't explain it
Absolutely awesome tarp setup! Classic! Can't wait to use this on the next outing!
probably my favorite tarp setup!
Thank you Dan. Been trying this on my own so many times. So I just watched this video 5x I shouldn't have a problem now lol
Another very useful tool for the tool box, thanks Dan.
That is a really neat and easy way to setup a tent with a tarp, gonna have to show that off soon.
Great explanation and I can't wait to use this set up this summer!
Thanks for a concise video that gets to the point. Well done
Nice video, really like the simplicity of it. Really showing me the versatility of a tarp... perhaps I should get one🤔

Thank you for this video. Looks like a great tarp setup.
Great video. But it's not long enough . I need more time. I can't even finish my morning coffee. God bless. From Glenn CATT in Massachusetts.
Best tent yet. I will try this next camping trip.
This is the tarp shelter I've been looking for TYVM
excellent setup....
this is cool as I've made a playlist of all your camping stuff really inspired me to get back into the bush

Love your tent videos. need to try setting them up
Really like this set up....cool useful and easy.
Been doing this one for a while. A good ground tarp makes all the difference.
Awesome video as always. Would be cool to see a throwback to basics video with a cheap tarp and cheap materials. That beginners grab

This is my absolute favorite tent set up in the world 😂❤. So awesome . I am obsessed with teepee sort of ability to be mobile set ups
Another great video, thank you for sharing
We used to make those when I was a kid in the 50's. The benefit of having a dad who was an old army veteran.
Awesomeness dude great technique
Glad I waited. Good design, thanks
Great job, I liked it. Excellent cinematography and excellent directing. Thanks for the quality content! 👍

Thanks Dan!
Thanks for step by step tutorial! 🤠👍
No joke man, I just got my 10x10 in the mail and have been trying to make this exact setup with no success. Absolute awesome-sauce here!
Where did you get the tarp from?
@@johnygoodman6659 I got mine from Bushcraft Spain. It's a solid from what I've seen so far. Thought I haven't put it through any real tests yet.

You have your way, but I like this tarp set-up very much.
Awesome idea on set up for 10×10 ! And as always another OUTSTANDING tip / tool for the tool box. Nicely done! Keep kicking ass on videos!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍👍

That is my favorite way to setup my tarp. I have to use a 4' stick though with my aquaquest 10x10
Very nice

Thanks!

Thanks Dan, with a bit playing a ploughshear should be easy

Dan, your shirts on inside out buddy haha
