My rats only eat the inside of peas as well!! my mum and me were so confused when we saw that they had thrown the skins all over the cage. so funny though :))

Love your videos. I just purchased the same cage and own 6 rats all girls. Because fleece can get expensive or if you have trouble finding it what I do is go to op shops and look for blankets that I can cut up for the trays or go to Kmart and by doggie fleece blankets for $5 to use. Op shop is the cheaper option though.....lol. Keep up the great work girl. Give your girls a super rattie kiss from me

only towels as bedding can be pretty risky, as they can shred it and potentially choke on it, or swallow it and it might get tangled in their intestines! for me i use fleece + towel underneath. just wanted to let you know if you werent aware ;v;

@@laurenelloise I know you said there is no fabric stores in your area. I live in the USA and they are everywhere! However it's expensive. I go to the all around store and buy cheap fleece blankets! 2-5 dollars and it covers my entire critter nation like what yours is a knock off of

@@laurenelloise is there anything like Value Village where you are? Big thrift stores. Old fleece blankets are where it's at. I would sew them cozy huts and hammocks from it too. ^^
You can order extra shelves for the Critter Nation, it makes a huge difference for them as it adds space. It's *never* too much space, even if there are only a few ratties.
@@laurenelloise you can easily make fleece ramp covers too, use velcro to fasten underneath. The extra levels help make the ramps more shallow too for when they're older and steep is harder for them to get up.
I'm sorry to hear that your fur baby passed away. I've got my boys now and I can't even bare to think about what I'll do when that time comes. whoever discovered binder clips make the perfect fasteners for a fleece lined rat cage, is a genius. instead of using fleece from a fabric store, Wal-Mart carries fleece throws for $2.50 USD, they come in a variety of patterns and I can get at least two sets from one blanket. you can't beat it. I thought I was the only one who has meals with my rats lol, I eat, they eat. I have as much fun making those cardboard castles as they do playing in them. they're such amazing creatures and I can't imagine life without them. It's a daily task to properly clean rat cages haha, I like switching it up so that it's new and exciting I'm their cage so they are entertained while I'm at work. that looks like the easiest cage I'm the world to clean. mine doesn't have a large opening and you gotta do it all through smaller doors. Do you perhaps have a link for that cage?

It is a pretty easy cage to clean but it takes about an hour or so to clean haah. i subscribed to you because your real, you said "i just use a towel because i cant use fleace" and "THEYLL TEAR THAT SHIT UP" like i have a chinchilla and she chews everything!so i use towels, you seem to be a little on a budget for the rats but i find that so relateable!!
Hahah thank you. I did find out after posting this video that towels are bad for rats so I switched to fleece. Much safer for them 💗
I love watching your videos, I am adopting 3 boys tomorrow, up until now I have had only girls. My first were 2 girls I adopted from Craig's list, and then I rescued 2 pews from a hoarder situation.Sadly they have all passed and I thought I would give boys a try. I want them to cuddle with me, as all my girls would never cuddle unless they were in their cage, that was the only time they would lay still and let me pet them until they fell asleep, I don't know if you still do videos but if you do, keep up the good work, I so enjoy them

Awww this makes me want to have rats again! I had two gorgeous girls until a few months ago when they both passed away. It was really painful to loose them but now that I've had time, I really really miss having pets around!

I am SO jealous of your cage and your play pen.....
I have rats, but I can only have so many because we don't have room for a bigger cage and there's absolutely no way my parents would let me set up a play pen oooooh-no-no. (I'd have nowhere to put it when it was not in use) I let them run around our lounge room while we're watching TV. I hope someday I can have an entire room of the house set up for my babies :D

I have almost the same cage as You. The same in every way except for one. The doors only open on one side & I very sadly didn't find this out until We put it together & it makes Me cry. I gave Myself frozen shoulder trying to take one of the furthest lava ledges down on My own for cleaning. Getting the Savic Royale XL in 6 weeks though so Yess!! 2 full levels & 4 half levels. Super excited!
For the first time ever I'm down to one rat on Her own. I had a group of neutered males & My Young female so getting Her new friends will take at least a few weeks & careful planning & I'm getting them from a small animal rescue. By the way I did originally have 2 females but one of them had to be re-adopted as She was extremely rat aggressive & even the smell of other rats made Her want to kill. I mean literally kill,, not just fight. A rare set of circumstances.
the Savic Royale XL looks like it will be a great choice! Looks huge, im sure the rats will love it! Aw sorry to hear about your other ratties. Hope your girl is doing okay in the meantime. And i hope when you get her some more friends, they all settle in nicely. x
@@laurenelloise Aw thanks. Yeah She's surprisingly doing well. I've arranged to pick Her up new buddies in just over a fortnight. Yes I'm hoping everyone settles in together. I'm a bit apprehensive after what happened with Her Sister. I think She'll be okay though. Oh yeah the Savic Royale & Royale XL also have deep pans so You have the option of using a substrate like Finacard or another rat safe bedding. I've always used fleece in the Aventura but newspaper pellets in the smaller cage (I use a smaller cage for the first few weeks) but I'm open to trying out a nesting material & seeing how it goes. It's better for scatter feeding too.
haha great video! You have a great natural personality. 😊 I wouldn't recommend those dog play pens for rats though because they will chew straight through that in 2 seconds! They might only work if you are constantly there to supervise them

I know this is an old comment but just in case anyone else needs to see it, you can help your rats become comfortable with you by handling them multiple times a day, feeding them treats from your hands, putting an old shirt int he cage so they get used to your smell, providing safe hiding places for them.
I got 2 boys today 8 weeks old very scared of humans at mo. Any tips on taming them. Never had this problem with my girl ratties x
Aw little babies. Just spend lots of time with them. Also frequently give them treats so they associate you with rewards. I also find putting an old shirt of yours in their cage helps them become used to your smell.

we have wild mice and rats is it ok if we still keep the rats in a safe area like a dog pen thing, like you said?
Wild rats and mice are not the same as Fancy (pet) rats and mice. Unless they are hurt/injured you shouldn't keep them, they belong in the wild. If they are hurt I'd suggest taking them to a vet or a wildlife rescue xoxo
Would newspaper be an okay alternative for a litter tray?
I just researched this a bit for you (I was curious too but my general opinion was probably not). But here’s what I learned. It’s best to avoid using printed or colored paper. The inks can stain rat fur and might be toxic, or at least cause an upset stomach, if ingested. Newspaper isn’t very absorbent so it’s pretty useless for litter trays. Recycled paper cat litter works really well because it’s meant for absorbing wetness and smell. Just don’t use normal cat litter.

I see almost every comment! I got this cage from eBay Australia. It’s basically a Critter nation, just off brand. Most people get a critter nation because they’re great cages and a really good size. Liberta Explorer is also pretty much the same, so you could try looking for that. Try checking eBay, Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, and amazon for a cages

well, one of them isn't doing too good. She's not gaining weight, is growing in length a little bit (1.5cm in 2 weeks I'd estimate), isn't super active and has the sniffles. And now, she's either losing hair from her face, or her sister is barbering her really bad. I'm really worried that she's not gonna make it, and she's such a little cutie and very affectionate.
Oh! I'm sorry to hear that, I'm sending good vibes and well wishes, I hope she makes it through this. Have you taken her to a vet? They can get her on some antibiotics which may help! 💕💕

My rats also only eat the inside of the peas as well when the peas are frozen! For some reason though when its canned peas they gobble the entire thing down!
i just let my boys free roam my room where there cage is and block of the wires under my desk and the rest of my room is rat proof and cant get behind anything but there cage. got wood floors so not worried as i can sweep any poop up and i wash the floors often enough with natural cleaner that's not stroung at all because i have allergies so hate anything scented or chemicals. if anything it smells like baby wipes.
my rats do the same thing, they never eat the skin on peas. im thinking about just taking the skins off and giving the skin to my degus as my goldfish don't eat the skin of peas either but my degus love them lol

There is a cheaper alternative to buying fleece there's a few Dollar generals and Dollar trees near me and they have baby sections you can get the baby blankets and they work just fine

What do you use to make the playpen because I have a lot of wires in my house so it would be terrible if they got out!! Loved the video x
I used a big sheet of corflute and got my sign-writer friend to cute it down into 5 pieces for me. Of course not everyone can do this so I'd actually recommend using a dog cage/pen that's made out of canvas/mesh. how did you litter train your rats , like step by step, i have watched videos about litter training but my rats dont want to learn that very easily ,they are about 4 months old
They just picked it up easy. I made a litter tray and added paper pellet litter stuff to it and I also added a rock in it (because rats like to pee on rocks) and I then put it in the corner of the cage where they poop most. but can they still learn it even if they are 4 months old?
It may take some time, but they should get it if you keep moving their poops to the tray. Rat's are pretty smart, they can even still learn tricks at an old age so 4 months should be no problem!
I really need a cage like this. I recently got my hands on 2 rats. finally.. rats aren't sold here much anymore so it was hard for me to find some and I finally got my hands on some. now I'm looking for a bigger cage.

How do you keep it from smelling? I have 3 boys in a “rat manor” and i use fleece as bedding. It smells sooo bad! Any tips?
I'd try washing it more often and I think some people put vanilla in their boys water but I'd research this before doing anything to be safe! 💗

I want to buy a cage but I don't know what cage to buy? It is for only 2 or 3 rats and it is my first cage! Do I choose the one level critter nation cage or the tallest critter nation two level cage? Pls comment to help me choose!
The more room you can give your rats the better! But I also know the 2 levels is very expensive but for 2-3 rats, one level would be completely fine! One level is still very big :)

Would it be safe to paint the outside of a cardboard house with acrylic paint for a cute decoration? For example painting the cardboard house to look like a real house? If it’s dangerous for them, Is there Any other safe way to get that effect?
I would honestly avoid paint. Rats will chew the boxes, and even tho they don’t eat cardboard, they might ingest some by accident. Plus you’ll have to throw the boxes out each week or two anyway. The boxes will get yucky, best to give them fresh ones.

I'm also saving up to buy a big cage for my boys my 2 girls already have a huge cage so my boys need one to....do you bathe your girls? I want to bathe my boys because they are always in their bedding and they smell awful sometimes but in not completely sure about the bathing
Wishing you well on your savings! :) I don't bathe them, rats in general don't need to be washed because they keep themselves clean. Rats naturally smell, it helps though to clean their bedding a bit more often. Bathing won't hurt them, but personally I find it better not to :)

I've heard the bar spacing on this cage might be too big. I kinda want two or three male rats as I heard they get bigger so it won't be as much of a problem. I'll only be able to get them when I move out so I can save up for this cage (critter nation does not ship to Germany for some reason but this one does).
I want to either adopt rats from the shelter or get baby rats. At the moment I have 2 cages (one hamster cage and one for mice)
The hamster cage is the smallest, then comes the mice cage and eventually the cage shown in the video. If I get baby rats some day, do you think it would be possible to put them in the smallest first (really small bar spacing that's why I thought of this), then transfer them to the mice cage (significantly bigger but not as high as one critter nation part) and when they are just big enough to the new cage? Or is this too stressful? Should I just buy this grid stuff and put it around the big cage temporarily? I really hope everything turns out how I want it to be.
If I never get rats I might use it as a bird cage. (My dream birds are green cheeked conures and african greys lol)Also I can't live without cats but I have high hopes since one of my cats who never went outside besides the balcony is actually scared of my hamster, I don't know how she would react to rats.. She might see them as a kitten once they're big lol
The other cat was brought to the shelter at two years old and he goes nuts in my room when he hears the birds. He's not aggressive to get in there but even if you just hold him through the door he only has eyes for the bird cage.
Nope the spacing on this cage is perfect. I would just be too big for baby rats (like under 4 weeks old). Usually you bring home rats at 5+ weeks old. You will be absolutely fine with the bigger cage. I'd also keep the your future rrats in a room that cats can't get in because you can't trust them :) xx

I have 2 rats and they have an aquarium that is about the size of your bottom cage. I literally just got them, would they feel trapped in that size?
It's not so much about being trapped, although they do like to climb on the bars. Aquariums are bad for rats as it doesn't allow any ventilation and therefore ammonia can build up and increase the risk of not only you suffering allergies but also the rats getting respiratory issues. 💛 if it's possible for you, I'd try to get a wire cage
The aquarium has vents all around and on top, is this alright? I also don't think I'll be able to get a wired one, as we just spent 200 on this... :(
Chr Faz hey im sorry to say but rats CANT live in aquariums even if u clean it every day because the ammonia will build up and make them die so if u dont want to spend more money on an actual good cage then just buy mice and they will survive perfectly in aquariums not to be rude but you should have done research hope i helped feel free to reply to me
I did do research but I couldn't find a good wired cage. My brother was telling me get one, but they pet shop said 'no this aquarium is better'. My parents don't seem to care much since we already spent ages trying to get this one.
I understand. Pet shops can be really bad sometimes with advice, they don't care enough or know enough about the pets they are selling, they are just interested in making a profit and going home.
Try looking on classifieds (like gumtree, craigslist, ebay) or try asking on Rats & Mice Are Awesome Facebook group. Theres like 50k members and they should know where a cheap, wire, big cage is near you. xo
I want a critter nation so bad, but it costs like $600 to just SHIP it to where I live!
(Yes I know you can just buy "fake" critter nations, but it's even more expensive than)

Why don't you use saw dust unsted of fabric?
There is only a few wood shaving bedding that you can use for rats. Most are very bad to use. Out where I live, we only have the bad stuff. Plus fabric is a lot easier to clean and you can re-use it!

im a little late but have you done or could do a video for future rat mommies i plan on having 3-4 female rats within the year and i kinda need guidence with kinda everything haha from where to get rats (rats and mice are awesome say only rat breeders and some people say pet store rats are ok so a bit of confusion there) and the best way to care for them like beware of these thing ( may be food certain fabrics anything) i really want to be the best i can be i dont want to hurt them or do something wrong ( i never knew dried corn was bad untill this video even though i did do research) so if you can help that would be amazing !!! i love all your videos
Never too late! I think this is something I want to do in the future, something like a Rat 101 with everything you need to know before getting them etc. Generally, its best to adopt or rescue, but if you can't then breeders who know what they are doing are good, then last pet shops. Don't worry I didn't know about dried corn either until 8 months ago. I'm always learning stuff as I go even though I did research. Fleece is the best fabric to use and its best to ask Rats and Mice are Awesome for the best food available near you. 💙💙

in addition to what you advised for playpens there's a website called guineapigcages.com & i have a cage from there that i originally got for my hedgehog but now it's housing my hamster, but i imagine it would work very well as a playpen for rats! im not sure if they ship to Australia or not though...

I wonder if the pea skin is hard for them to eat? It is a bit thick kind of like corn kernel skin. The skin on corn is what tends to kill rabbits and small critters because they cant digest it. So my guess is rats being really smart maybe they just know something we dont about the pea skins?

Aww no hun, I'm sorry to hear they are like that, it's never easy to deal with :( Sometimes it's not safe to come out, and I know its hard because you feel like you are living a lie, because you just want them to see who you really are. It's a tough one, but do what will keep you the safest. Maybe you could write a letter to your parents? And leave it for them, and let them process it before asking/bringing it up? Your parents love you and should love you for who you are, they just might need time to process because they haven't experienced it before. I hope this is helpful. 💕
