      LP just means long play, and its a format of record. The record industry i believe still calls full length 8+ track albums LPs. And smaller collections of songs ep's. Im probably wrong but thats how i understand it here in hillbilly TN. LP can apply to vinyl discs, cd, or just a release of music in general from my perspective.

    Each vinyl record has its own unique history actually encoded onto its surface.
    And with the right replay equipment it is possible to hear this history.
    Although the underlying music can interfere with this process.

    I guess it makes sense... a tape is a tape, a vinyl is a vinyl. We were always misusing terms back in the day based just on what was popular. An "LP" was just a long-playing vinyl record. (It was not a synonym for "vinyl", which could also come in EP or SP forms.) A "record" itself was just a collection of music, but the format was unspecified (unless it was otherwise) - we just assumed it meant vinyl because that's what was popular, and that became kind of a shorthand. But CD, tape and vinyl are all formats in themselves, and if we say "CD's" and "tapes", there's no reason we shouldn't say "vinyls", with "records" meaning released recordings that could be on any of those formats, or others beyond that. There's a reason the Grammys give out "record of the year", not "vinyl of the year" or "tape of the year".

    What about my collection of 8 tracks? Aren't those tapes? They may be crappy tapes (they are) but it was all we had for the car back in the day. They were awesome to a high school kid in the 70s. There was ample road noise to drown out the hiss.

      @@humblestever24You just don't know what you are missing. Record a well used album onto an 8 track for the best of both worlds. You get all the distortion and pops of vinyl, squeezed through a medium full of hiss, squeaky rollers, the occasional dragging tape, dirty tape heads. Bliss!

      I have a feeling this might come from 78s when a long piece like a symphony would cover several discs enclosed in an album. Not that I remember that but I’ve seen plenty at boot sales.

      As I understand it, when it was a collection of records (more than one disc) then it became an "album."
      Growing up (in the 60s and 70s), Records, LPs and Albums were used interchangeably. 78s were still around though I don't recall ever seeing any new ones for sale.
      45s were referred to as that, 45s and "singles." I never heard of a collection of 45s as an album as two or more of them didn't form a cohesive work like the LPs did. There were there to promote the "hit." And, if it became a hit, sell the LP.
      Of course, The Beatles mucked all of that up by having double-A sides on their 45s (setting aside the EPs) and excluding the singles from the LPs.

      @darryldouglas6004 2 місяці тому

      @@sguttag Interesting. I grew up in the 70’ s. My oldest brother had 78s some of which came in a fanfold type box which is what you are describing as an album. I agree the terminology changed because we commonly referred to any record of multiple songs as an album.

  • @PeeOrbital

    Vinyl is short for polyvinyl chloride, the stuff that these discs are made of. Since the term already contains the word poly, meaning many, adding an s to vinyl is redundant. EDT: 😉

    I have a collection of vinyl albums or vinyl records, most of which are LPs. I could also say I have a collection of LPs and a few EPs. "Vinyl" is a category of raw materials; most vinyl records are made from PVC. "Vinyls" doesn't make any sense, unless you're an analog audiophile (analogophile? vinylphile?).
