  • Angels of the Battlefield was made by Randwick Screen & Media (Film and Television) students of TAFE NSW.
This is the first ever documentary to celebrate the contribution of those "other ANZACS" the some 3,000 nurses who also served and sacrificed during WW1. All volunteers from Australian hospitals, nurses sailed with the First Contingent in November 1914 and nursed them on their return home in 1919. Often working near the front-line on hospital ships, casualty clearing stations and hospital trains, 25 were killed and 388 were decorated with 8 receiving the Military Medal and many more mentioned in dispatches.
Angels... follows two young women - representing the generations who will keep the ANZAC spirit alive for the next 100 years - on two Who Do You Think You Are-style journeys of discovery in search of Sisters Nellie Morrice and Katherine "Kitty" Porter, Both were awarded the Royal Red Cross (Second Class) for their courage and service during WW1. Through relatives, historians, and researching military and other records - secrets are revealed, the historical record corrected, stories are told and long-lost treasures are brought to light again. Both stories are illustrated through incredible personal archives - including a series of photos taken illegally by Nellie - interviews, archive film and historical re-enactments and location footage shot in Turkey and France, which help to bring alive and personalise their stories.
Angels of the Battlefield is a story so rich in drama, tragedy, controversy and coincidence that you just couldn't write it.
