I used to walk my grandparents' West Texas ranch when young. I saw bobcats, snakes, gila mon- sters, spiders, buzzards, cattle, sheep, deer, horned toads, arma- dillos, skunks and owls. You had to be careful when walking.

1964 Prescott troop #1 . Went everywhere. The Ww2 crowd didn't need any saving .. the kids were self sufficient ..or dead... Only trouble was Havasu. Our Eagke Scout did a beautiful dive off the falls broke his neck and a big rescue as our number 1 was a quad ... He waited 50 years at Mitchell's Church watching hundreds of folks throw away crutches and chairs. He died we years back ..Worked as a liason and secretary to the Yavapai Nation . No one knew it cuz it was top secret but Ft Whipple was COG SW Command. Dr. Whitman the defacto president in emergency .Of course this was secret and the ones that knew just told everyone they were on real hot real estate mind yer Ps and Qs... This didn't get translated down to the younger kids who thought are parents were losing it over commies and fascists behind every bush and 2 WW and even when DDT effectively wiped out bedbugs scabies ticks fleas crabs and a plethora of bugs that drove men mad. So that went away 1974 and we've no substitute that's even close... So now it's legal to make and use ..Sci channel will teach ya. But not to sell or buy... it was only dangerous on farmlands as eagles eggs get soft ... but urban areas are screaming for DDT.. So the bugs in Arizona are at a peak in drought... we used to have cloak rooms and grams was adamant everything stays in there . And a bath if she demands... Mom was an OCD mysophobjc ... a surgical nurse under Dr.Whitman . She kept a store of drugs and bandages and stuff at the house . And vacuumed twice a day. America was in a bug plague and I don't know when they discovered diatomaceous earth . But I say hell with salt or kerosene around yer tent the Diatomaceous earth is stopping crawlers ... even if they get to you they are in such bad shape they can't do much and.. it's not poison . In drawers and cabinets just blow a spoonful and shut the door . It will find them . Coffee grounds on the fire Fer skeeters OK but best of all be prepared with oil and water . That is what the Bible says to use on wounds . Now the type of oil you have available is life or death .. the oil for any skin problem is Castor oil. It will pull out burrowing bugs and ticks come out as every bug hates this awful oil. Taste it? The antibiotic property is a RICIN oil . You have to take the resin off the outer shell .. Ricin is deadly to all.. But Riciolinic Acid is a extremely effective antibiotic topical that rivals any ointment in the drug store . Heals fast . Cannabis oil in a spray bottle of alcohol will stop mersa infection dead. Watch the simoson oil video. I bake my bud 300° six mins . The secret to cannabis is low heat cure all ...high heat butane lighter in a pipe ...Prozac..... tsp 3x daily and 6-8 weeks my cancer was gone. As an old alcoholic drug addict which most of us are ... I recommend you boil a gallon if tea for the road . Spices...ginger turmeric dash of pepper and lots of basil . Then keep the honey out and just reheat a cupful at a time and yer bullet proof yer liver ❤ yeeea ! and all the old man pains go out of yer shoulders and back...the hot ginger will give you legs far longer than a cup of coffee and the Basil will bulletproof yer immune system . Or just carry the spices and pull some stream water and boil a bunch up. Beat dialysis with parsley for christ sake ... and the big one everyone needs . 2 drops of oregano oil in saline nose spray . No self respecting bug will live up that schnazola...

We use castor oil on mange on dogs and we used Vetrycin spray as it is 2.5 ph acid water and Heals faster than anything known . Used it on a colt almost kicked down the barn trying to put in a stitch ..tore a 4 inch gash ...so I sprayed her and she was fine in 2-3 days . Old farmers at the orchards took a paintbrush with honey on flat tins laid out in the orchard would catch all the bugs at night with lights. Pull em up in the morning before the bees...

Like that Phoenix police officer that took his girlfriend up that mountain in Phoenix last summer with no water, and she died. We see high school and college aged people on the trail all the time without enough water & supplies..

I was hit by a stupid driver a few years ago when I was crossing a street in Roseville, CA at a crosswalk. He was making a left turn then, at the last minute decides to make a right turn right into me. I have been suffering pain ever since.

Sadly most hikers out there are as swift as those driving in the washes or camping in one. It is good experience for the Scouts.

I rolled my 4-wheeler down and over myself on a steep mountain in Reddington Pass in Tucson and had to walk out (with plenty of water and food). Bloody and disoriented, 25 people on sandrails and side-by-sides did not even acknowledge me. Be prepared when you go out. I don't blame them either, I looked like the last of a battle. Torn clothes, bloody arms and legs, and carrying the camouflage packs from the 4-wheeler with a mini-14 around my shoulder. The first phone call on the side of the mountain was to my insurance agent. haha

Even in the northwest I always made sure I had more than sufficient water (with water bowl for my boy) and food with me when me and my Jack Russel Jimbo. After we got done we would go down to these picnic tables and would rest even lay down on sad tables in the shade and rest. Great nap for me and my boy. Very few if any people.

I had a similar experience on the Flatiron hike just as it started getting warm in the Spring. On the way up I passed 3 people and a medium sized dog-- not very fit looking but keeping up. I passed them again on the way down, but by then they had obviously run out of water and had nothing left for the dog. The last couple miles of that hike are in full sun, and the dog was pretty clearly not going to make it. I turned around and walked back to them and gave them my extra bottle of water and told them to give it to the dog--JUST the dog! I could tell that they realized they had messed up and I watched as they gave him a big drink. A little while later in the parking lot I saw one member of the party and the dog emerge from the desert, climb in a truck, and leave. I still don't know what happened to his buddies...talk about stupid hikers!

I disagree because, no one would want to go through that kind of headache. I think making them pay the associated costs of getting rescued would be more effective.
