    At 14:30 you state that "more than one hundred civilians were murdered in the garden of one of the Stavelot houses". This is obviously incorrect: the murders in the garden of the Legaye house cost the lives of 23 civilians. Also, though the bodies were discovered in the afternoon of the 22nd, the massacre took place on the 19th at 20.00hrs. I think you somehow mixed up this one massacre with the bodycount of the combined massacres, of which the killings in Parfondruy on the 19th (26 murdered civilians), the Legrand Farm (19th - 17 civilans) and Trois-Ponts (19th - 7 civilians) were the other main crimes.

      @@TheAceDestroyer Yes and no, my father, his brothers and other relatives were of the generation that endured the Great Depression, as such, they more-than-likely would have joined the military for the sake of survival. Then, at 3:18-AM on December 7th, 1941 the Japanese made that decision for them. Back then, if you were of age, only cowards or those who were gravely ill etc. didn't join that fight. I was in the USMC mainly to emulate my late older brother who was KIA in Vietnam, luckily that war was over by the time I got out of Boot. So, Yes and no.

    You forgot one IMPORTANT American combat unit - at Rochelinval on January 7th 1944 - the Lost Battalion ( 551st Parachute Battalion ( the “Goya’s” ) temporarily attached to the 82nd Airborne ) won a bitter battle where 514 of 643 men were killed or wounded; including there outstanding commanding officer - Lt. Colonel Joerg. Within 30 days because of the casualties the 551st was disbanded and disappeared from the US Army history. On February 25th 2001 their bravery was finally acknowledged by receiving the Presidential Unit Citation - the highest honor that can be given by the US Army.
    My father 1st Lieutenant John “Milt” Hill was one of the few brave survivors.

      James Hill Thanks for mentioning the Goya's. This Cavalry unit gets totally overlooked for their part during the Battle of the Bulge, the 38th Cavalry Recon.Sqdrn. attached to the 102nd Cav. and defensively positioned at Monschau, under the command of LTC Robert O'Brien. I recommend reading about this unit, if you haven't already. I hope to return to this sector soon as I have explored the 23rd Inf. Reg. of the 2nd Inf. Div. and their engagements at the Heartbreak Crossroads, and after reading the excellent book "Company Commander" by Capt. Charles B. MacDonald, and his time in combat just being the 393rd- 99th Inf. Div. in the Krinkelter Wald along Rollbahn A, and falling back to the crossroads at the Palm Farm and into Krinkelt-Rocherath. It was a humbling experience to walk where they had fought. Cheers.

    WOW! I've been to many of the locations you talk about. It is still astounding. The 101st and wind US Airborne fought tough against the overwhelming odds. But the bad weather Hitler wanted he got! But it slowed down Kampfgruppe Peiper. I'm glad you mentioned Hansen. Please do Clervaux next. Nobody covers that area of the Ardennes. If it fell on the first day, the battle may have turned out differently.

    • @TheAceDestroyer
      @TheAceDestroyer  6 років тому +2

      Yeah visiting those locations is a wonderful feeling, both the 82nd airborne and 101st airborne (and the other units) fought incredibly hard trying to stop Hitler's last offensive in the west.

    • @TheAceDestroyer
      @TheAceDestroyer  4 роки тому +3

      I'm glad you mentioned that. The official website of the December 44 Historical Museum in La Gleize (owner of the Tiger II 213), mentions that no Shermans were hit. www.december44.com/en/tiger-213.htm However, one account at Moulin Maréchal southeast of La Gleize mentioned (hypothetically) that they could have destroyed a few Shermans. In Klingelhöfer's statement (in command of a Panzer IV), he said that they had a disagreement with one of the Tiger II commanders and the opportunity was lost. It might be possible that Felton was referring to this instance instead (this occured on the 20th of December). The latter information comes from 'Duel in the Mist 2' by Timm Haasler, Roddy Macdougall, Simon Vosters and Hans Weber.

    This German army was a shadow of it's former self. All the best and most experienced were dead or holding the Red Army back. A few experienced officers with new recruits and even kids. It's not surprising there were going to be innocent civilians murdered. As German cities burned. They should have never been sent on such a suicidal attack. Relying on captured fuel dumps to keep their untrained tank crews moving. Good docu though.

    • @barthoving2053
      @barthoving2053 3 роки тому

      No. Even if the Panzers could have crossed the Meuse and broken out the Germans simply did not have the forces to secure their flanks. The Allies would simply cut them off. Unlike 1940 were the command and control of the French had completely broken down. the allied forces to the north stayed under control of Monty. Supplies had been building up for weeks so even cut off it could still operate. And unlike 1940 in the south there was an army capable of an offensive operations under Patton.
      And the truth is that Americans did stop them in the first days. It should have been a 2 pronged attack but the north one was blocked in the first couple of days. This was the shortest route the Meuse and forced everything into the southern thrust. The roads in the Ardennes simply could not cope with that traffic, so it's questionable if the Germans could have moved up more fuel if they had had it. Even in 1940 capturing fuel was also a priority. The only merit of attacking through the Ardennes is that nobody expects it because it's logistical nightmare and a defenders dream.

      @@barthoving2053 indeed, had the Germans managed to cross the Meuse they would have been shot to pieces by the Allied airforce on the open planes west of the river. Had they actually tried to recapture Antwerp they would have been blown to smithereens by the Allied naval guns just like they had been in Normandy. They did not stand a chance and they knew it

      Gas, ammo, trained crews, gas trucks, supply trucks, mobile artillery, epic long 150 mile one road supply line. No replacement men or vehicles, Terrain working against you, entire Brit army to the north, Patton to the south, .......other than that.

      The AceDestroyer this is obviously just an opinion, but I think it is just a little loud. It interferes with the narration because of the rising and falling nature of the music. Not bad, just distracting.

    The Treaty of Versailles and its inhumane exploitation of the French
    Still unparalleled today!

    Not correct with the massacre , and not correct with the retried of Piper. Piper run out of gasoline, amo and food was plenty left. When Patton approached Piper to surrende, surrender is not an option and they can hold of the Americans quiet some time. The Waffen SS was furious with Hitlers failure in the Ardenne and just a half day away from the Coast they knew the war is lost. Piper told Patton they have some unfinished business with the Russians which will reach the Secret Weapon manufacturing in middle East of Germany if they can’t stop the advance in Hungary. Piper was allowed to negotiate (approved from the SS, not Hitler) to offer to keep the tanks back and full functional but he can retried with all of his men , around 1,100, and cross the river Rhein to attack the Russians in Hungary . The SS will stop fighting against Patton and hold of the Russians so Patton can reach the side of the Wunderwaffen before the Russian arrive. This was done, Piper left with his 1.SS Panzer(without Panzer) and got equipped with new Panzer to stay in February 1945 operation Spring Awaking three Russian guard devisions and hold them off for Patton to get hands on the secret weapons. My father was there and he got wounded in March 1945 fighting with his panther against Russian tanks, taking out 11 T 34 in 15 minutes and two IS II . An third one was his end and hit his panther in the side. He survived he war and worked with the US after the war to equip and train an German Division at Flensburg und US Flag…..non of this is very well known and Patton had have an freaky accident…..however, Dad was there and the rest is bad history ….
