Let's take a look at how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was made. We'll examine how it was animated and the various ways the movie's animation style was modeled off of the illustration techniques used in physical comic books.

Tom Holland is my favourite overall live-action, with Andrew being my favourite as Spider-man solely, and Tobey as Peter. Any of my issues with Tom got (mostly) resolved in NWH. That's live-action btw, overall would either be Miles from Spider-verse, Peter B. Parker, or PS4 Spider-man.

Uh I don't know, both companies are pretty bad all in all. There's a lot of hired companies that Sony contracts to make these films, for example Wardenlight Studio are responsible for creating the concepts and environment for the movie. Considering how great the first film did, I would not be surprised if Sony decided to change some of these aspects. Sony hasn't been too hot with their recent releases.
A similar thing happened to TASM.

So, to sum it up, we watched a live-action comic book, not an animated movie. And at the end of the day, it actually did something new and astounding by "breaking" with already established rules/norms for animated feature films. Pity we can't do that every time.......

    • @arenndups5294

yeah very sad tbh. Things are called experimental for a reason. It's just sad that no one would take a risk that could potentially make them lose money rather than profiting from it. There is no guarantee that something new and original could make a profit purely because it either hasn't been done before or has been done but less than most other options. To go back to the video's title, If it ain't broke, "don't" break it.

I would call it live-comic or comic brought to live.
Cuz the term live-action is already kindo reserved for in-real-life actors.

This movie was a revolution in how to use CG in feature film movies, and I'm pretty sure lots of execs at Pixar and Dreamworks started to sweat from their butt when the movie came out, like the signal that "the raytracing party is over and if we don't get a bit creative, we're gonna be left in the dust".
Which in turns, gave Turning Red from Pixar and Bad Guys from Dreamworks, which were by far their most stylistically creative movies in years, which, I'm pretty sure, were Pixar and Dreamworks answers to Spiderverse.
I'm loving how the CG industry is now taking a different direction that what the Pixar Dreamworks duopoly had made us be used to for the past 2 decades, and projects like Spiderverse and Arcane are now spearheading that new direction.

You make a prescient point about animation being essentially, moving illustrations. And how spiderverse plays so well off of that. The trend for animation has, for long a time now, been to make things increasingly realistic. But thats always struck me as counter productive. As past a certain point it just makes things uncanny. And it doesn't really add much to the story. (I don't think encanto would be any better for seeing bruno's individual nose hairs). if the medium is ever to truly move forward, then going back to its roots in illustration and drawing would help a great deal. Klaus and Vincent are two other movies that do this brilliantly. Albeit with very different results. And with the amount that technology can do to aid the production process now, it needn't cost more.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the animation style Spider-verse started and newer Dreamworks movies are replicating, but I feel movies like Lightyear and especially Rango use realism to their advantage. It's all about what type of movie the director's are making, whether it's something grounded in reality or the complete opposite.

Funnily enough I think another good example of realism is encanto, you can see each individual curl on their heads if you pay close attention and while you can’t see the nose hairs as op said, you can see their pores in some scenes and the textures on the ground, clothes, the houses. The character designs are a little exaggerated but they fit pretty well within a realistic setting.

I don't understand why people used to want to make hyper-realistic animated movies when that already exists in real-life movies. Animation is meant to be stylistic, and when you do it correctly you get a masterpiece like this.

I'm a recently-graduated animator. I went into college hating 3D animation for how soulless it was and how it's just been a way for Disney and Pixar to show off their computer software and make hyperrealistic CGI horror shows instead of well-thought-through feature films. Into the Spider-Verse changed my entire perspective on 3D animation and made me excited for it again. It showed me new possibilities for stylistically creative CG animated feature films. This movie changed everything for me - it's a masterpiece and I'm so glad it exists.

Great video y’all, I had no idea that the depth of field was created via the doubling, and it totally explains how even the most innocuous of screencaps of this movie still maintain that comic-book-like effect even when a character doesn’t take up like half the screen. This instance being Roger Deakins' consultation on Walle and how that shaped future animated films. I wish these impacts and their contributors were more obvious to the general public (me lol), but at the same time there is something beautifully novel about discovering it in a more minute fashion like watching your UA-cam video.
But I do agree, I am extremely excited for the further investment into a animated film franchise that has an entirely different take on the now a-typical camera-realistic animation style. My favorite thing about the ITSV universe, specifically the upcoming ATSV, is that the villain The Spot can only work in this particular universe. Based on the descriptions of how the villain's powers would function in the movie, his powers are too complex for any normal animated movie or live action. It's such a needless complication and yet I have faith that it will pay off to astronomical results.

I´d argue that the direction helps this movie more than the style itself, if that makes any sense. I love the use of actual panels, speech bubbles, onomatopoeia and some of the slapstick, but honestly when I saw the movie for the first time 2 days ago the underlying CG animation was really apparent to me. There are gorgeous shots everywhere in this movie but I´d say there are probably just as many shots that are quite ugly with background characers or even main characters looking like they are out of Fortnite. This is even more apparent when looking at the moving images and seeing that the characters are clearly moving in a 3D space while the overall style of this movie is trying to be one of well, a 2D comic. I STILL think this movie is visually impressive, but I do think its silly to say traditional 2D drawings wouldnt have looked a lot better. Probably would have doubled the budget tho.

But sadly, the product is headache-inducing, at least for me. The fluttering images produce something akin to a strobe effect. The misalignment resembles a migraine aura. And their use of reduced frame rate evokes a stuttering PC with an overworked video card. To my mind, this indicates that they’ve missed something in the translation. These comic effects work on the page by drawing your eye along the dramatic lines and whooshes and blurs. Your eye can linger on the page. It is encouraged, but not forced, to move on. When those same effects are put into animation, the result is a flickering frenzy that plays absolute havoc with perception. It was a bold experiment but the trailer left me physically discouraged from seeing the full movie.

ART! Sony didn't need to do all these things - but they decided to. they could have gotten away with less... but they had something to add to the collection of art humanity has been building.
