  • Gunner kennels are known to be extremely tough, but how tough are they? Can Gunner G1 kennels stand up to shotgun blasts, tractors dropping logs on them and being thrown from a truck at 60 mph? They are crash test rated, but we wanted to do our own tests to see how the kennels hold up! Check out this in depth Gunner Kennel Review Video. We worked extremely hard and hope you enjoy!
The tests may seem ridiculous, but if you are trusting a Gunner kennel in the back of your truck with your dog in it, you want to make sure it is strong! Although these kennels are not fully indestructible, they are extremely tough and we were impressed!

Here are some of the pros and cons of the Gunner Kennels:
The reversible doors are nice in case you have it in a place where you need the door to open a certain way. The locking system on the door is also well made. We like the fact that there is a keyed lock on the door as well as bolts on the top and bottom of the door that go into the frame. The door is the weakest part of most kennels and this door definitely impressed us.
The Gunner brand tie down straps are very well made. You could use your own tie down straps if you want, but be careful if you use a ratchet set. You could over tighten them and end up bending the pins on the sides of the crate. The staff at the Gunner retail facility warned us about this and said they have seen multiple people ratchet their kennels down so tightly that they damaged them.
The kennels are heavy which can be a pain. The large has wheels (the others don't) but even with the wheels it is hard to more around. It does fit through a standard doorway, but for many people moving a large Gunner Kennel is a two person job. It is awkward to hold from the front (wheels are on the back) and move due to the width of the kennel.
The drain plug and drain channel in the bottom of the kennel are a nice touch.
The chew proof kit is high quality and makes a huge difference for the strength of the crate. Since the kennel is made of plastic, a power chewer could attack the door and end up chewing through it given enough time. This would be a challenge and take quite a while, but the chew kit would prevent that. I can't imagine any dog in the world getting through the steel on the chew kit. Here is the link: bit.ly/3P1S93z
The water bowl is a nice feature, but we wish it was metal instead of plastic for dogs that are power chewers. The plastic is high quality and would be tough to chew, but a metal option would be nice.
There is a great amount of airflow around the crate to keep your dog cool. There are vents on all four sides that move a lot of air. We were testing it on a 95 degree day and were impressed by how cool it stayed when in the shade.
All in all these crates are awesome and are some of the nicest crates we have seen. The kennel took a beating during the testing, but we have never seen a kennel that we think is tougher and would hold up to these tests better. Reach out if you have any questions!

Wow. $700 for the one you got into! In the 60 mph drop test the thing sure held up well, but no way the dog would survive that one.

Haha, yeah. The kennel did hold up extremely well, but agreed on how dangerous that would be for a dog. Our main goal was just to see how tough this thing is and those were the best tests we could come up with. We were hoping the fire department would drop it off a ladder but they were too busy the day we were shooting. Thanks for watching!

Can you ride on the highway with the dog in it?

I have never used it that way, but the kennel is made to keep your dog safe even when driving on the highway. The kennel is well made and the straps seem really strong. If you are comfortable having your dog in the bed of your truck this seems like the best kennel for the job.

Just curious, in the door test, was that the large size kennel? How tall are you?

Yes, that was the large kennel in the "kicking" test. I am a little under 5'11. Let me know if you have any other questions! We have spent a lot of time with these kennels.

@@SuburbanK9DogTraining Thanks sooo much for the response. I'm in research mode considering getting a new lab! It's been many years since I've had a pooch!

@@Laughinghawg Absolutely! That's awesome that you are getting a new pup! I would recommend watching the videos on our "Puppy Training" playlist. The most important to watch for now would be "Avoid This Mistake When You Socialize Your Puppy". There are also potty training videos, heel training videos etc. We also have a couple of informational videos on Puppy's First Day and Puppies First Week that give a lot of good information/guidance.

How does it do with temperatures

    • @SuburbanK9DogTraining
      @SuburbanK9DogTraining  Місяць тому

It does much better in the heat that I would have expected. I think it is because the walls are double walls with a lot of air in between acting as insulation.
Your question made me think that maybe I should do a heat test with a thermometer on a hot day.
