I was born in 1981 and grew up in the Hudson Valley, NY. I remember learning about and celebrating MLK day in Kindergarten and on. I moved to South Carolina at 20 years old and was shocked when I learned that it wasn’t a holiday here. I had no idea that it wasn’t celebrated nationwide.

Being a (former) resident of Virginia, I can tell you that there was significant racial pushback. Martin Luther King Jr Day happen to fall on Lee-Jackson Day, a Virginia state holiday. For a while, Virginia celebrated "Lee-Jackson-King Day" until Lee-Jackson Day was finally moved to another day.

Can't believe I'm not the only one who remembers Lee Jackson day. I had mentioned it to some of the 20 something year olds I work with and not a one of them knew what I was talking about.

I thought it was interesting that this aspect wasn't addressed because while the union and cost considerations were also valid, all the pushback I remember seeing from everyday people seemed to be from a racial standpoint.

Because Veterans Day was born of Armistice Day, many people were upset when the “Uniform Holiday Bill” was signed in 1968, changingVeterans Day from Nov. 11 to instead be observed on a Monday, in part to promote travel and commerce by providing three-day weekends for federal employees....as a veteran i find that offensive and unjust

    • @garyjobe721

Get Some yup also know as this Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968 and officially took effect in 1971 following an executive order from President Richard M. Nixon. Government moved Veterans Day back to the 11th of November.

I have to push back on the way some things are said in this short. words and language have power, speaking the truth, is the most powerful. She says, when it was discovered that the laws were unjust", unjust laws are not discovered. unjust laws are put in place to be unjust. law that makes it legal to treat some people differently than others, because of the law makers person preference, cannot be discovered as unjust, but are there to make the unjust law enforced by government and law enforcement. More truth would be the reason so much scrutiny was put on how MLK lived his life is because people in this country didn't want a holiday to celebrating a black person. The personal lives of Presidents, when we celebrated Washington and Lincoln and others, were not judged or questioned, by individuals lawmakers or states. Racist was and still is the biggest contention with people not wanted it celebrated. I do not take it personally when passing a black person living on the street, and white people look at me like that person is there because of some failing on my part. White people need to stop getting all up in there feeling when racist acts are called out as racism.

Amazing that those who didn't want the holiday NEVER OFFERED UP an alternative to recognize the social movement regarding the recognition of African Americans as citizens. The full emancipation of African Americans met resistance for over 100 years after the war, sun down laws against blacks, segregation laws throughout the South, and movement and living restrictions by law (red lining and anti-black housing deed covenants) seemed to not matter for those detering (White America) the establishment of the holiday and its importance for both white and black Americans.

Hard to think someone that couldn't be trusted around women should have a holiday just for them. Should a blanket holiday for all the civil rights folks not just one guy that morals that compared to me makes me look like a saint.

It turns my stomach to see those numbers and justification for not allowing us "one" day off from work. One day of lost "productivity" and how it "costs money". It makes me uncomfortable confronting the reality that we are only here to keep the capitalist machine going, something all too obvious this year.

It's interesting to note that New Hampshire rolled over its former Fast Day into Civil Rights Day in 1991, before then renaming that day as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1999.
This means the holiday was not at all a fiscal concern to the state, as it may have been for others. Rather, it was purely a debate of ideology and principle. This is quite an interesting debate considering that Fast Day was a religious, state-mandated holiday meant to repent for the sins of the year.

Also your talking about a person WHO IS ALL ABOUT honoring people rights but he one of the main voices who helped ended segregation which was the MAIN PROBLEM in America which not only dived America in whole but is the main reason why many Africans Americans today are still stuck in prejudice and poverty.
