Was Sherwood Forest Really The Home of Robin Hood

  • The original Robin Hood ballads took inspiration from the real life and exploits of Robert Hood of Wakefield
The ballads told of the adventures of a rebel yeoman outlaw operating in Barnsdale Forest around the Wentbridge area of Yorkshire.
A couple of hundred years later, the narrative shifted and Robin Hood was changed from a lowborn northern yeoman to highborn southern nobleman.
The highborn, nobleman Robin Hood character was inspired by the real lives of historical figures such as Robert fitz Odo and Faulk fitz Warren..
.. but here, we remember the story of Robin of Barnsdale (that’s me by the way) 😎🏹

That Clannad Soundtrack from the old robin hood series, the whole thing is one glorious masterpiece. Always happy to hear songs from it. Really soothes the mind, does it not. And thanks for those awesome history lessons!

Smashing story. And quite lovely backdrops you used to tell it. Setting the story straight, glad you’ve posted this. 😮

I once heard a theory(in Swedish) that your name evolved from people calling outlaws robbing hoodlums. Robbin' hoods. Robin Hood. Do you think that theory holds any creedence?

there’s a few different variations of that theory but personally I don’t believe the name Robin Hood is a play on words.
After all it was ‘Robyn Hode’ before it was Robin Hood
One of the real men who inspired the RH stories was Robert Odo.. with Odo being a kind of archaic version of Hood, I believe over the years the name would’ve developed from these such inspirations.
Up until the point where the name became synonymous with outlawry and was used as an alias by highwaymen. There are even records of men having their last names changed to robinhood by the courts after being found guilty of thievery

The classic Errol Flynn Robin Hood movie, at least the Sherwood Forest part of it, was filmed in Chico Northern California near where I live. I’m not sure about the castle part because we don’t have very many castles in Northern California.

Use old English pronomines in the future (Thou, thee, thy, thine etc)
