A Day in My Neighborhood: Is Bijlmer Really a Dutch Ghetto?

  • The atmosphere on the Bijlmer streets is immensely different than that of the city center of Amsterdam: it's very vibrant and multicultural. But the truth is, this Amsterdam neighborhood used to be synonymous with crime, drugs, and illegal immigrants. Many Dutch agreed that the Bijlmer was the first and only Dutch ghetto, the worst reputation a neighborhood can earn in Holland.
But I live here today, and I've never felt safer, comfortable, not to mention having the possibility to have a much bigger space than what you would normally get and pay if you lived in the center. So how is it really like to live in this neighborhood?

Sadly bombs go off at ATMs and bullet casings found on ground at other places. Just saw a ghetto bird in the air looking for suspects. Still not a safe place. Crime doesn't just disappear from an area overnight. Takes a long time and a mentality shift from the immigrants that move here.

When we got married in the early eighties, we lived in the 'Bijlmermeer'. I know there has been quite some controversy about the area. Yet I still consider it as the best place I've lived till now. It's true that things rapidly went downhill later. Today I think it's again a wonderful place to live. So I agree with you.

    • @TheTravellingFoxes

Yea I heard early 80’s was tough and the Bijlmermeer used to be considered the whole of Zuid-Oost. Nowadays, Bijlmer is much more developed, safer, and comfortable to live in compared to maybe the other areas in Zuid-Oost. But then again it’s the Netherlands - quality of life here in general is good compared to other parts of the world 😁

Great video! Thanks for making me miss going around Bijlmer. I lived in Bijlmer for one year during my Master's at UvA and I loved it there. Everything is accessible. IKEA, Albert Heijn, and Lidl are not too far away. The only con I would say is that it takes 20-30 minutes to get to the center and going on a night out in Amsterdam Centrum is kind of hassle because you have to bike it back to Bijlmer. Other than that Bijlmer is a good place and if I get the chance to move back to Amsterdam I would live in Bijlmer again.
PS I really recommend Oma Ietje. They have great food.

Came across this upload and glad that I did. Great video. Don't know what the area is totally like now (which is why this video was a must watch once I saw it on my timeline) but back when I lived in Amstelveen in 2009-2010 this used to be one of my favorite places to go because it reminded me the most of where I grew up (I'm from the U.S ... New York City in particular) with the variety of food selections, diverse group of people you would meet, the businesses that catered to certain things that helped me feel comfortable while there (I used to go there to go to the movies and get my haircuts). The connections I made and parties I was fortunate enough to attend remain some of my fondest memories of living in Holland. Again, great video and continued success wished to this channel and all involved.

It is indeed true that the Bijlmer had a questionable reputation, known nationwide. However, the city of Amsterdam, certainly after the "Bijlmerramp" of 1992 (El Al cargo plane crash), wanted to revitalize the neighbourhood. It seems to me they succeeded for the most part...!

However, today it was a good day. What do you think about a comment that a UA-camr made saying that traveling was overrated because now you have Instagram? He said the world has become so small that we, humans, have seen it all and there is no need to travel. He used Machu Picchu as an example. He said he never been there but he has read so many stories on Instagram and watched so many videos, he felt that he knew how it felt to be there. Thus, no need to go there. What do you think?

@@TheTravellingFoxes yes most people there have voted left because they got fooled thinking it is against racism so now the housing is getting replaced by houses with solar panels, green roofs and tesla charge spots. The original people have the option to buy / rent first but you do not need to be a rocket scientist to know they can not afford that housing so soon the area will be gentrified and the poor people will get dispelled to the north / east or Belgium. Like parts of the Hauge and Rotterdam these areas will be completely different in 10-20 years.
We used to have class housing, in the past the whole region was setup to house ex colonials, later all kind of (low income) immigrants where added to the region with the outside region providing housing for richer people. We had these areas in several big cities in the 90ties we payed people 5000 guldens to relocated to Groningen, Almere, Tilburg in order to try and undo this.
The last decades it seems the focus has shifted to making expat and international student living areas because it generates in a lot of money with all kinds of hipster businesses and 5 euro starbucks coffee (not that they pay any tax) and expensive parking.
The other area in Amsterdam where they used to relocate people from Morocco and Turkey is already half way split if there are a lot of documentaries about it they just get pushed out of the city and policy changes of elementary schools where they are not involved but the white people who move in the gentrified areas do.
In my opinion its a huge leftist operation where they scam people of color for votes with the pretext of blaming other parties for racism and using those votes to save the world buy making very expensive housing so it is guaranteed no poor people are able to live in any of the new housing mainly by throwing stagering amounts of environmental taxes and policies which translate into paying a lot of extra money for stuf poor people that live of 50 euro a week food and leisure allowance a week just cant afford and since its a fact that around 80% of poor people in our big cities are of color while 21% of the people here have a color it is a very disgusting racist way to dispose people in order to save the environment so that the rich kids can grab a house and make the world a better place but only for themselves!

Nice to see that Bijlmer is better nowadays.
I grew up in an architectural very similar neighborhood in Schiedam near Rotterdam. But less multicultural. Had a few Turkish classmates in kindergarten but that was about it. First and only time I saw a dark skinned person was at swimming lessons when I was 3. Totally flabbergasted because the underside of his feet were white.
    Highschool was much more multicultural.
I guess Bijlmer had a high influx of Surinam refugees after Surinam independence 1975. Lots of people with Indonesian background can be found in the Hague after World war 2 and Indonesian independence. Not sure why I studied with more Turkish classmates than students from Morocco. Their parents were the 1960s gastarbeiders.

The Surinamese weren't refugees, they were just afraid that they would lose their Dutch citizenship afer independence if they didn't go there. So a lot came at once, when there was already a huge housing shortage. Many ended up in these soulless Bijlmer high rises, basically based on a failed political utopian idea, build for anonimity, with no social structure present and many of the immigrants not even speaking the same language, and then the recession hit. So that got a bit out of hand.
In 1992 an airplane crashed into one of the high rises and that kickstarted the overhaul of the area with some mild gentrification. Investment, the fact that it was multicultural rather than a monocultural immigrant neighbourhood and shortages of homes did the rest.

@@TheTravellingFoxes Your story about the Bijlmer is right. It was meant for the middleclass and there was an inspection comittee that came to your house to talk and look if you kept your house clean and well maintaiined, if not you couldn't go to the Bijlmer. They also have visited my aunt and uncle's house in the early seventies to see how they lived. Al changed in 1973 because of the independence of Surinam and the rest is history, @Lynnot Parris summed it al up in his comment. In the 80/90 ties there were some bad neighbourhoods with junkies all around, it was like a ghetto and you better didn't go there after dark. But since the rebuilding of some parts in the Bijlmer things have changed in a positive way.

My first video of yours, I thought/hoped it might be so. Now I'll watch your newer stuff. Since this thread is 2yrs, a commentt is free!
Sure, Amsterdam's the best European city by far *to visit.* But Utrecht etc left me cold, really dreary out of the centre. Honestly, I prefer definitely *not "rich",* more busy areas in Australia, as a rule. Or big space, as in closer (120-300km inland) country towns, like Lithgow or Bathurst [NSW].
Biljmer is interesting because, let's face it, Amsterdam metro is small, Holland is bloody small, so Bijlmer is really just a small, manageably sized, island inside a very orderly state. No-one is 'conceal carrying' at Aldi, ffs! =) Aust has snakes, spiders & sharks that can kill you all over the place & we don't care, we just adapt. I'm glad you understand that, Nat!
10 of my happiest years were spent living & working in Fils, living around & being friends with locals, not other expats. Now, I'm usually at home on a small, 'exclusive' island, Gold Coast Qld. Luckily, it's just 300m over the river to Surfers Paradise. And only 10hrs flight 'home' to Fils.
Thanks if you read all this!

ZONING REGULATIONS!!!! Don’t forget the zoning regulations that were one of the major reasons for the original projects failure. The whole project was designed around cars and separating work, free time and living. This minimised organic movement, social interaction and safety.

I just wonder if this area is safe at the night time for a girl walking alone towards hotel. I booked the hotel room near bijlmer arena station. but my dutch friend said it is unsafe at night....I am concern becoz I may need to walk back my hotel from metro after finishing my work at night (I.e. 10 pm). thanks

Hi! It is perfectly safe. Which station are you getting out of? Bijlmer area has a bad reputation but I know so many (women) who live here and get by just fine. If you feel unsafe maybe call a friend while walking at night or pretend so you don’t get “targeted”. I do this a lot.

I will switch to english to add an important part. In 1975 Suriname became independent, but before this happened, a lot of people had Dutch passports, same with the ABC islands, ( all ex colonial of course!) So after an influx of people from Indonisia, there was also a lot of people from Suriname and Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire that came to live in the Netherlands ( and rightfully so! ) to avoid losing that passport! So when these apartments stayed empty, (I was a lil baby..) indeed a lot of "immigrants" also with Dutch citizenship moved in, but not used to the Dutch system, and the Dutch Government wasn't handling the integration well AT ALL, so this is how it became a bit of a shitshow and an easy target for the Drug dealers under Bouterse smuggling drugs into Europe.. I saw MANY MANY crazy things as a kid, that a kid really shouldn't see and learned a lot about how to hide and keep quiet....! It is a rough side, but I also believe that in every big city that exists, and I think the Bijlmer has lost that reputation. A big turnaround came after the Plane Crash.. it really bonded people more together in a time of big big tragedy. I will never forget it.

3:00 They actually wanted to make houses for rich people, so all the houses were really big. But most rich people were just not that interested. Also, the Dutch rules say that they have to help all poor people, then the Surinams came to The Netherlands and pretty much took over, they had big families and needed to be taken care of, Bijlmer was perfect for them. Then the prices calapsed, and it will take a generation or 2 before they are gone and then the prices will raise again.

I would not be so confident your bike will not be stolen in the Bijlmer. It's the most common crime in NL and in fact, if someone hates you and sees your bike, they won't steal it, they will toss it in the canal and laugh, and you'll be angry . I want u happy . 🙃

Nice video but this video is not true. The only reason some people love Bijlmer is because of Amsterdam poort. Other than that is just grimey people getting robbed kids walking with knives and getting stabbed. And people also getting shot at the reason why poort is nice and save is becuse they have allot of police stations and camera’s there so is very difficult for criminals to catch somebody there you will get arrested so fast. Amsterdam arena is nice but postcode 1102 1103 1104 and 6 is a No go zone for certain people bit for therest this is a jice vid and a good review for people to come to Poort.
