We first saw TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay Grease. No one knew who they were, maybe 20 people in the audience. The next time they came back to Cleveland you couldn't get into the club. One of the greatest groups of all time and should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. They are real musicians and have "Soul with a capital S."

Tower of Power is truly an "Elite Band" and they have the best Horn-Section in the Business!!! Hey JT you may also want to react to Tower of Power's tribute song to The Godfather of Soul, it's titled "Still Diggin' On James Brown" it is super soulful & funky!!!

That's Lenny Williams singing lead at that time. He went on to a solo career. His biggest hit as a soloist was 'Cause I Love You' a soul classic.

The legendary Tower of Power, from Oakland, California! They had the best horn section around! RIP Mic Gillette.

I saw TOP in 1970 in Oakland, California. I was in the Navy. They blew the roof off the place. Yea, I'm old.

Yes, Tower of Power with The one and only Lenny Williams on vocals. I like 'Just when we start making it' off the Back to Oakland lp.

@@alcambrola2834 I Agree! Thank you Al, Lenny started in Gospel Choir and referenced Sam Cooke as a big inspiration.

@@heentlasaa9974 I've seen the band many times with Lenny at lead vocals. To me, Lenny was the best lead singer they had and yes, "Just When we Start Makin it" is one of my favs also. It's like big band classical soul!

@@heentlasaa9974 Thanks Heen. In high school, I played trumpet and was in the band. At the time, early 70's (yes, I'm old-lol,) Chicago was all the musician's musical heroes.
One day a drummer friend of mine, came over and said, "Check these guys out."
It was the "What is Hip" album. Of course, I was totally blown away and Tower was my new and still is favorite band.
Not bragging, but I've seen them almost 100 times. Lenny Williams is still my favorite singer and that lineup from the Warner years to me was their best. I'd like to see them again but time marches on and the core members are getting up there. Saw them last in 2018 and still tight as a clenched fist. If you ever get a chance to see them, you won't regret it.

Thx! Tightest band of the 70s! Lenny Williams is truly missed but the new lead singer, Marcus Scott has the energy and passion and soul to qualify being in this band! You rock!

Marcus Scott is no longer with them. The new singer is Mike Jerel from "America's Got Talent" To me Lenny Williams was THE man.

Somehow, they fused the studio recording over "The Soul Train" performance. ToP never did anything tracked in a live performance. I do know that you can watch the live version of this from Soul Train 1973. It's on YT, Tower of Power Soul Train, "So Very Hard to Go" Upscaled UHD 4K. That's the absolute live one. Anyway, thanks for the review.
