Danny LE Everyone is different, I was scared some jumpscare but mainly by the fact that you can't fight back and you had to find a different exit in dark places at times. Not being able to defend myself is what scared me

551Music Both scare you to death. Amnesia is still way different when it comes to inducing fear and loss of control. I get terrified either I play Outlast or Amnesia but both don't frighten the same way.

Not only is outlast scary, its a well made beautiful game, with a compelling story line, full of suspense and deceiving peace around every corner, one of the best games i've ever played just wish it was longer. Alien isolation next.

To be honest not a huge fan of alien isolation. It’s kind of weird to say this but the alien is kind of too smart. Like camps areas your in and stuff. The game is beautiful and tense though

I've played and completed this game so many times that I'm no longer afraid because I'm aware of the popups and surprises. Tbh this game was very well made and I enjoyed every moment of it

Can anyone suggest a game that is scarier than Outlast? Just finished the main story and am playing through Whistleblower and I don't know any game or movie that is more disturbing than this one on almost every level. It's tense, suspenseful, gut-wrenching, has classic horror elements and the setting is perfect. Seriously, does anyone have a scarier game? I'd be interested in checking it out.

Jump scares don't cause fear they cause sudden shock, you take away the ability to be startled and the game is soooo shitty, I played it a bunch of times at a friends house and I really don't fucking get it, Its not scary, the only credit I can give it is that its very atmospheric, but that's really IT.

This game isn't scary, you're never in actual danger. Even if you die you restart a few steps back, so it's not a big deal. And the jumpscares are predictable and lame.
And god, i hate when in a horror game they use the combination of "scream + high volume music". Why when i'm chased i have to hear an ear-raping noise?
Overall the game is good, but it doesn't understand what "to scare" really means.

Dont fucking play on easy then. Play it on insane where you have to restart the entire game if you get hit once. None of you're points are valid at all. This is a fantastic horror game. Sick of all these hipsters saying "It's not even scary, it just has loads of jump scares" . The game offers a whole lot more than just jump scares. It has solid controls, photo realist graphics, some really disturbing themes, an incredible tense atmosphere and a rock solid 60fps on console. So tell me, what games do you actually consider actually *scary*? because if you're gunna say something like Amnesia or five nights at freddy's then what the hell because those games are not even scary.
well, one hit and no continue it's not a fair difficulty, it crosses the line between "you fear the death" and "it's just annoyng and tedious".
Two great horror games?
Fatal Frame and Alien Isolation.
There, the enemies don't appear always in the same place and you have to manage a lot of resources.
Dying sends you back a lot, but not so much that it becomes tedious and boring.
Fatal Frame uses still camera angles and it's a third person survival horror, while Isolation it's a first person stealth game.
A real stealth game, in which if you get caught it's really hard to escape.
To me horror is something more than a creepy atmosphere or some jumpscare.
It's all about build-up, all about how few supplies you can find.
But it's also about not beeing frustrating.
In isolation there's a lot of build up before the alien actually starts to chase you, in outlast you find that giant dude almost at the beginning.
Fatal frame starts with ghosts almost immediately, but the camera, the atmosphere, the sounds... something that outlast doesn't even come close.
I'm not saying that outlast is a bad game, i only say that it didn't scare me at all.
This game is legendary. A truly horror genre defining moment

I still prefer tension over jump scares. being afraid that something might get you is far more frightening than something just jumping out. Don't get me wrong, this game looks good but I feel it relies too much on jump scares from what I've seen.
This. It's why the Asylum level in Thief is so scary. You know there's something in there with you.
But you can't see it. You can only hear it occasionally. And it's toying with you. I'm getting through the level in 20 minute bursts. lol
If you prefer tension over jumpscares, maybe 'Amnesia: Dark Descent' is the right one for you. Try playing it.

Third act ruined it. And somewhere around the halfway point the heavy breathing just stops for no reason explained. So scary as hell during the first half. Then it just kinda goes down hill from there. There's a really touching moment involving the video camera though. YOu'll experience feels. You will.

So I finally played this and beat it. It was scary, but mostly because it's all jumpscares. The atmosphere was ok, but nowhere near as good as Amnesia: TDD, which was scary because it made you afraid to go anywhere and had effects on your character that depended on his sanity. This game is loud noises and linear chase scenes; scary, but not for the reasons it should be. That being said, it's not a bad game.
Disappointing. The deep psychological fears that stick with you like in SH2 is what I want to see more of.
