So... Netflix Just Dropped The Weirdest Animated Movie...

- This is Netflix's latest animated production. And it is... weird. We saw a trailer for this a few weeks back, hosting an odd artistic style, adapted from an award winning children's book. But with so little pages to adapt, how does a bigwig animation studio fill in all the gaps? Why of course, by taking from Illumination character archetypes, sprinkled with a bit of Sing elements and finishing up with all the standard fame storylines! All coming together to make a film that is narratively non-outstanding, but visually a real eyesore. With cringe being the centre of the style of humour. And backhanded compliments. Welcome to the wild world of Netflix's Thelma The Unicorn. As yes, Netflix Just Dropped The Weirdest Animated Movie...

...Does a movie that breaks no boundaries deserve merit? I think it's debatable either way. - Фільми й анімація
So! Have you seen Thelma The Unicorn? And what are your thoughts on it...?
This is literally the first time I’ve heard of it
I'm currently watching it on my tv what's the coincidence of that
My little sister was watching it years yesterday
I'm kinda interested but it's probably not gonna be so good
um no i dont think so i hate the human designs, the design also looks nothing like the book. i've seen this trailer before and i was confused when i saw it. honestly i prefer thelma the horse over the unicorn look. and i actually think that donkey is cuter than the unicorn. the studio pretty much copied illumination style, can we please just stop getting the same styles of human looking either illumination or that emoji movie or even disney 3d? this film would look 100% better if they actually got the style correct. i havent seen this book in a long time but uhh i guess now we can say that thelma the unicorn book got a movie..
not watching it
Let's be honest...that "unicorn" has serious plush potential and that's probably what they were hoping for.
Also these people are always 5-10 years behind the time so they probably thought they were so clever making a commentary on the Bronies...
And I know, it takes a LONG time to make an animated movie but... people had forgotten about the bronies already 3 years ago when this movie must have started production.
Please don't.
It doesn't look like they've made any merch though, the only thing I can see is a book-accurate plushie that was sold as part of a set with the book.
a movie with this artstyle... merch? you need to rub your glasses man
It’s been a plusher for years
"ugly character"
*_takes off glasses and lets down their hair_*
SUDDENLY "BEAUTIFUL"
I've always hated that stupid, sexist trope.
"Wow *puts strand of hair behind ears* it's like i can see the *real* you"
I kinda appreciate that Sony Pictures Animation did the inverse. Even Flint Lockwood was like "hey, don't worry about the glasses, you be fine with em."😊
Agreed. I love it when CGI can get cartoony with the character designs.
@@WillieMangalord and miller are the best bro
How could they completely ignore the book's artstyle to look like an Illumination knock off?!
What about The Bad Guys? DreamWorks ignored the original style and made an entirely new and way better artstyle
Well they want to make it marketable
Because it sucks, the book sucked, this sucked too, it's all shit
illumination at least tries to look clean
this movie for whatever reason chose to make everyone look like they don't bathe
and that's the most interesting thing about it
That's probably exactly what happened. Executive: "So, let's completely ignore the book's artstyle and make it an illumination knock-off because moneyy"
The human characters are so unhinged looking
Reminds me of the character design of sausage party.
@@fast-toastmarmaduke,big mouth, ruby gillman and now this movie. sausage party human designs don't look that bad compared to, those.
the way hair is rendered in general looks so unwaashed
Cursed Nightmare Creatures
The animal designs: Illumination ass art style
meanwhile the human design: Sausage party art style but more WORSE
I'm just blown away how they made her curly hair so REALISTIC, I can see every fiber!
Yeah I give props to that aspect, Like the individual hairs that stick out are pretty good
BUT OH GOD THAT MUST HAVE BEEN SOOOOOOO HARD TO ANIMATE 😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵
This looks far more like a 2012 straight to dvd film your mom sees at a RedBox and decides it's the perfect time killer for you and your older sibling whilst she cooks dinner
That was weirdly specific, but i completely understand.
That oddly specific description is so freaking accurate
Fun fact: One of the directors of this film (Jared Hess) is also directing the live-action Minecraft movie! He also directed Napoleon Dynamite!
And NACHO LIBRE!!!
You made me more interested in this movie now
Oh, so he's to blame for Napoleon Dynamite being the definition of a dweeb.
First I was intrigued
now I am invested
There's a live action minecraft movie now? Why is that not as surprising as it should be?
Its animation looks like if sausage party was made for kids.
Oh it's way better then that Cringe fest
I thought the guy on the thumbnail was Weird Al ngl
LMAO 😭💀
it might as well be
Actually Jemaine Clement's character. When I was watching the trailer for this film, and the music producer shows up, I knew instantly which character he was voicing!
Don't you dare insult weird al like that 😤
DONT DISRESPECT HIM LIKE THAT??????
The creators of this movie were definitely very high in the making
Soooo.... Netflix wants to be the new illumination?
I mean, making kids movies not to be clever or smart but legit just to entertain kids I am actually okay with. I am tired of everyone just wanting to show they are smarter than you through their movies. So I would be happy to go back to basics here... But man this looks weird.
Well they definitely nailed one thing Illumination does.... terrible human designs
@@pinksamm Illumination's Human's Are Beautiful! In My Opinion Well most of them are really weird looking but I Still like it
@@Poo_Number2illuminations’ human designs look like poo underscore number 2
Right on its a kids movie and a good1 at that it has a simple plot with a likeable lead and good music and that all it really needs im sick of people demanding that kids movies be so deep and emotional that it makes adults have some big reaction when really its just to make kids happy and really that's the real beauty of animation making kids happy and if older people can find joy in it to all the better
I love how ugly the designs look! Also if it makes you hate it less it's by one of the creators of Napoleon Dynamite + Jon Heder is in it too!
I think the visuals are both generic _and_ slightly odd- like something is off but not in a deliberate stylistic way, y'know? I like the slightly odd style but I wish they lent into that more and made it look slightly less generic lookin. Coulda been a lot more interesting.
Yeah I'm into how some of the characters look at least
Agreed, and this shows with Vic. Vic is a very unique character design, he's not generic in the slightest, but then in the same breath background characters are incredibly generic. I'm not saying bg characters have to be the most dedicated insanely detailed things ever, but they should at least fit the wacky style some of the other characters do fit.
I honestly thought this just looked like a BETTER version of the illumination style. I think people don’t appreciate that just because a character is ugly doesn’t mean the character design is bad. We have a million cute unicorn movies. This was unique and I think it has a lot going for it.
All I'll say is. It was interesting, It certainly wasn't great but it was okay at best.
It's Netflix what did you expect? They've never created a "perfect" animated film. Although I will say that Leo was much better than this movie.
@@particleacceleratorexplosi6925 True, And I have the same opinion about the songs in this movie. While they weren't half bad they also weren't half good either.
Thelma isn't supposed to by ugly, I think, but just average looking. And the question if she got real talent is somewhat addressed with the blind producer lady, who decides to come out of retirement without even seeing Thelma (obviously), but because she can sing well.
I did like how Peggy never called about who she really was.
Peggy was the best and her husband was so willing to just do as she wanted when he realized she wanted to go meet Thelma.
there's a phrase i've heard of once before called "hollywood ugly" where a character actually looks good but simply doesn't fit hollywood standards of beauty and usually done with live action because hollywood never hires actual ugly people
Idk why he’s talking about Thelma not being that “ugly” when it wasn’t the point that she was ugly, no one said she was, they said she wasn’t eye catching or “looking like a star”. Also the music in this movie actually kinda goes hard
what kinda songs do they got?
I miss the "you didn't rely care" at the end😔
Maybe because we do care o3o even a little~
If you miss it... You did really care.
I honestly thought this was a Nickelodeon movie, not a Netflix movie
Kind of remind me of fanboy and chum chum in way
Wait, isn't this just the plot of Hannah Montana!? but with a pony being a unicorn instead
my favorite thing about watching DazzReviews is learning about new shows and or movies and also trying to guess the music playing in the background and also recognizing the music.
Well, it is a bit like Shark Tale and more on Hannah Montana
It’s so good that nobody has heard about it
Doesn’t Netflix always drop werdiest movie ever
The guy on the thumbnail looks like John Lennon if he was shot with a blunderbuss instead of a revolver.
You know a movie is bad when the main character is supposed to be ugly but is the prettiest thing in the whole movie.
10:56 you already know the animator is a guitar player. for those who don't know the boxes being stepped on are guitar pedals and they reference the big muff and the tube screamer pedals
Yeah but that’s something that can be simply looked up
@@Motionmanguyrn idk seem like a very specific detail. but its still a cool detail
I can confirm, co head of character animation is a guitar player 😊
I was watching this move with my sister 8 years old and I couldn’t watch the first 5min but my sister insisted i played on my Nintendo while she watched the move and out of nowhere she just log out of Netflix “I don’t want to watch this anymore” I don’t know what happened but yea if a kid can’t even handle this idk who this was made for
I find the style of this movie interesting on a visual level. Because like, it looks like the regular modern animation style but like, has hints of actual creativity in its design language? Like its being held back from being a bit more unique.
Like some of the shaping of the props or the shaping of the characters looks cool and interesting. But then its contrasted with a lot of generic looking stuff.
Exactly how I feel. The writing was great, but the visuals are very conflicting. You have hints of creativity in Thelma and other more curly hairstyles throughout the movie, you have the other donkeys Vic and the horses, you even have the Narwhal the truck driver and the old lady that stood out, but then in scenes like when they're performing or when they're trying to break into the concert you see the characters and it's like, wtf? You're all generic barf in the worst way, and yet those around you look amazing and are booming with character. Not saying they have to be detailed, but they should fit the wacky style the main cast fits in simple ways. A good example is Hotel Transylvania. Even background or less important characters fit the style of the movies. They don't have to stand out, but they do need to fit in.
celebrities wear costumes and do acts all the time, i don't know why her being a fake unicorn was such an issue
just saw it last night, it really was WEIRD.💀
This movie is gen alpha's version of open season
It's Milli Vanilli all over again. 🤣
Watching this movie feels like having a fever dream on drugs !?!
I love the charachter designs in this one
There perfectly sketchy looking
It reminds me a lot of that Barnyard movie
It's very much like back at the barnyard
yes!!! I loved it gave me a tiny bit of nostalgia, the goofy faces and songs and animals and the texture
Oh ya I see whay you mean good eye dude
Same
Another movie about how it's okay to not meet expectations and it's okay to be different where the main character is still cute, but the villain is visibly "ugly" with exaggerated features that real people have and are made fun of for? Oh. . . yay?
Ikr
I've not been a fan of your takes the last few videos, but I still appreciate your coverage and bringing my attention to things I do end up liking!
Netflix really watched Bolt once and said: "Yeah, we can do it too!"
1) I don’t think the movie is supposed to be about her being “ugly” I think it was that she looked “boring”. She was a pretty pony but she was just plain. A unicorn is rare and unique. She always had talent. She just didn’t have the Hollywood flare.
2) Thelma’s VA has a beautiful singing voice. I really like that they strayed away from generic pop songs for her. I really wish more people were talking about this fact.
Holy crap, I did not even realize that. I was too busy jamming with Thelma's songs. Not too many covers, either which is also pretty cool.
@@angelmarin6442 her singing was great ❤️
I thought the movie was okay, the songs were pretty good, I even kinda found the gross cud song kinda catchy 💀
I was just so confused about the world building. Like if cows are sentient in this world…do they still use them to make burgers?
I guess it’s because of the circle of life.
yeah the cud song wasn't half bad lol
I'm curious who the horse was supposed to be, since it seemed that it was making fun of a blond youtuber faking it for views?
I remember my friend screenshared this over Discord and played it at 2x speed. It felt like a fever dream.
I just want a 2d drawn movie that has actual heart put into it
Still more memorable than any of the slop disneys been pumping out recently (bar one upon a studio)
I mean, netflix studios (I don't know what they call it) is still quite new, so it might take some time for netflix to release a banger, but this movie is still better than Disney's now
Tbh I didn’t hate it. It was definitely weird. But the pool boys made me crack up every time and the animation was beautiful as usual
Tbh I really like the designs of the characters. Very unique.
Thelma's design is so like... she looks like she was made to be voiced by Kate Micucci or Kimiko Glenn. Does that make any sense at all
Yea, like I haven’t heard the movie or seen it, but the character looks like she should have one of those “aunt” voices iykwim
I watched the trailer and it looks like a weird and kinda boring movie
i thought the same thing, but it wasn't that bad when i watched it today
Its better the the trailer would have you thing lots of silly fun and cute stuff
I've enjoyed it and due to how long the movie was it helped explain the story rather than fast paced. Though of course it's just up to the viewer to like
@@rye1371 right on all accounts
1:48 Dazz, you didn't say the author of the book was Aaron Blabey who also made The Bad Guys book series, the same book series that DreamWorks made a film loosely based on them two years ago.
no way you're in the thumbnail!!!
Also to be fair dazz
The horse character who throws up his own food
Was a play on the internet celebrity who gets famous for gimmicks or clownish behavior
Thelma even in the movie states "that's how he got famous?"
And then it turns out that is a just a character the guy plays for show and he has a fake "relationship" with Thelma to promote a power couple even though it's all fake
During the final song about being yourself, he drops his "chew the cud" medallion showing that he is drolping the act and just going to be a singer (which is his real talent)
The movie seems to critique and even call out music and celebrity culture as a fake, choreographed, lip synced and managed industry
Where the illusion and fakeness is seen as more important than the actual songs or messages of individuality and talent
Thlema ia not ugly, but she's not interssting so no one goves jer the time of the day
By becoming a Unicorn people acraully paid attention to her
Which is a play on how you have to stand out to be noticed
Like how elton john exploited fashion choices to get people to hype him up
The pool boys and gemine clement doing a tim curry impression as Nick Diamond
Were the best parts of the film for me.
I also like the facial expressions and the way they animated expressions in general.
It's weird, but fun to introspect
The manager straight up looks like Iyami
Honestly, the pool boys were the best part.
Why does this remind me of barn yard?
3:02 I thought he was wearing some kind of cosplay outfit, Jesus Christ that is horrifying
I never even heard of it
First Disney dropped the weirdest animated movies, Onward, Strange World, and Wish. And now Netflix just did the same thing with this movie. What is this world coming to?
Studios trying new ideas doesn't sound to bad to me Disney made way to many Disney movies I like the new weird stuff we get now a days
Well at least they do unicorns better than Cartoon Network.
TBH they could have pushed the character design even further. It has that illumination vibe because they play it by the character design playbook while keeping it to what is proven to be popular. They could have gone full Courage the Cowardly Dog with this and it would be something of a childhood classic that gives people nightmares years later.
As a brony i will skip this movie
That unicorn and pony remind me of that subreddit…
Why have you done this?
I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about and I don't think I'm exactly happy to get a reference for once ^^'
Yeah what you expect making a 5 minute book into a 2 hour movie💀
The norm of the north vibes are insane
If it were actually weird, I probably would've liked it more
I found some of the physical comedy to be pretty funny. The animators seemed to have fun with it. The evil manager was particularly hilarious to me because of it.
As a fan of animation, It was pretty mid, but I don't regret watching it. The implications of a lot of things (like the meat products point), really makes you wonder how that setting works though.
Is it the same animation studio from Leo? Because it looks like Leo
It's by Mikros animation, the people behind TMNT MM, Orion and the Dark, and Paw Patrol The Mighty Movie. Jared and Lynn did a reddit AMA a while ago and they answered a few questions.
lol, is that Deadpool's Blind Al? And if so, is that Deadpool's Unicorn?
It makes a lot more sense when you know Lynn Wang (the director) has her origins in online animation, she co-created little cult youtube series like Dogsnack and worked on dick figures etc, she's very much of a certain type of humour and while its been sanded at the egdes in Thelma it's still there. Frankly the film won me with just the Pool boys alone. What obsessed me during the movie is that the world the film is set in just has animals as part of the world as equals, like being dairy cow is a job etc Like the film establishes it's actual paid work and the animals are employed, earn money and spend it. The highlight of which was the boyband at the end which was 3 horses and a guy and the guy was basically performing like a horse which cracked me up.
The sad thing is we will never get a movie 100 percent true to the even if your ugly stuff because these studios are so afraid people won't watch the movies if there actually bad looking so it will always be a message about accepting who you are with models and normal looking characters
the manager (Rick diamond) his teeth aren't real, he took them out in front of thelma when she showed him she wasn't really pink
Weird artstyle, corporate feeling animation.
I can’t explain it, but many modern kids movies are coming out now in this same bland style with wacky proportions and odd textures.
It’s not my favorite.
i have this thing where every vehicle from an animated movie has to be replicated somewhere as a driveable one
At least it’s not marmaduke 💀 that’s the only credit I’ll give it
So, the movie full of caricatures has characters that look like caricatures?
Imagine my shock...
I was gonna say it's terrible but the end was not bad
It was OK
I don't know why, but jemaine clement was hilariously funny as the guy your making fun of with the teeth and such.
Also I really like Reggie? The drummer donkey, I think was his name. lol
Leo was one of my favorite animated movies last year.
lol, the horses looks like the ones that Blitzo holds up in HB
I genuinely forgot this movie existed 😭🙏🏾
yeah, it wasnt out yet-?
It came out yesterday its easy to miss it but trust me its a good watch
3:04 i swear this is a Silencer reference
personally I think it being so ugly gives it appeal but I get not agreeing
Its just sad that the basic plot of the story is just more hanna montana/ jem secret identity music icon movie
I do like the jab poked at ai genarated music songs
Honestly, after the first quarter of the movie, I really enjoyed it. Even if it was just for the visual gags and one liners. As well as cud
4:48 I swear I thought that was fucking dr disrespect haha, especially because you mentioned the whole "influencer" situation
im ngl some scenes genuinely look like ai... the hearts bursting in the screen, the fire, all the people, some other scenes, it looks like it was carried by ai with some edits to try and make it not look like ai...
Honestly I kinda fuck with the stylisation here, everyone having weird proportions is so much more visually appealing to me personally than the same ‘safe’ and ‘sanitised’ stuff that a lot of other animated films use
Why am I more focused on the background that you're using? It's from sonic heroes!
How did the donkey play that guitar💀
Whe else thought this decade should have never happened?
This movie looks like it was created by illumination
how is this "Resolver" style movie nr 4th most popular in Norway?
I left the room when sister turned that on and stayed out for a few hours
What the flip man😊
WHAT IS THAT SONG AT 3:56 IT'S SO FAMILIAR
this might come off as really weird and creepy but im still waiting for at least one drawing of Thelma on 'those' types of sites.
1:07 The main theme is it doesn’t matter what you look like😂😂😂😂😂
3:03 watched the movie before i watched this and didnt see this and i regret that, plus its a kids movie...
I was watching it.. VERY UNCANNY. didnt finish it
