Man you made that look hard!

I have found that when working in a tight, seemingly impossible place to reach, after a few times in and out, either the space gets bigger or I shrink as it seems to get easier. That comes from probably too many years working on aircraft. Looking forward to part 2.

I agree once you figure out the gymnastic pose to reach what is needed, it gets manageable.

Great job! I'm doing the same job on a Morgan 43 CC. Problem is that the old starter is about three inches shorter than the replacement. Much tighter fit and I'm worried that the hot wire could ground out on something.

Wow, my old starter was bigger than the new one in my case, the new one was a little smaller (Thinner) so this was not an issue for me. Good luck.

Thanks! Great video. I've got a starter which won't turn (same engine), the relay only clicks like a fast ticking sound. I'm afraid the starter motor has been under water and might have started to rust, and therefore is stuck in it's position.

just here looking for a link to a good supplier for a new starter. I purchased a wilson aftermarket which had bad fitment and nearly destroyed my flywheel, and online suppliers are cheap but not well specified for the right parts. Prices will run from $900 to $88 dollars and one needs the right part at the right price.

Okay I just read the description below the video and the part numbers and the same fitment issues I found are all discussed together with the proper part numbers, which I took to O'reilys on my core trade in, but they didnt reference that, It was unreadable, but thanks so much for the delco remy numbers and Im ordering my new starter today! (actually discovered I replaced the starter over a bad ground wire poorly contacting the engine block and the starter I traded in was in fact okay, but it behaved as if it had low battery or was failing due to poor contact which is very often the real issue. It can be badly soldiered battery cables or corroded terminals.)

@@douglundy5755 glad you were able to find the Delco part numbers handy. I guess on the bright side you have a good spare now. Always have to look for the silver lining when it comes to boat ownership. Lol

@@Svdreamchaser Id like to add that in the PNW where many boat owners work on their engines, we have two suppliers in the Washington State area with a very dominant online presence and I called one asking for a starter and they demanded the serial # saying they cant fit without it, and yet another happily quoted me $900 for a starter shipped from Ky to them in Washington and then to me. And I called the other company and asked, and I got a RETURN CALL from the previous companies number??!! as if they are the SAME outfit with two faces. Both of them trying to beat the Chinese parts importers and keep us from getting a nice starter for under $200 when they want our thousand bucks! (what happened to working for a living!) And just Google Perkins Parts and you will see who these guys are. (happy to share the names privately but not online)

    • @Svdreamchaser

I likely k ow one of them. I used to travel to the PNW and really liked to shop in one of their stores. I also used to love that resale shop in Seattle but I think they may have gone under a few years ago.

@@Svdreamchaser Well, no, I dont have a spare at all and I traded in my original starter for the wrong fit, Oreily's from Wilson starters, probably a re-branded Chinese which should have had a spacer added to provide the correct throw distance to the flywheel. And I see your listing for the Delco 28 and the 20 MT which is noted in the forums as far more powerful, but the 28 is for sale and listed for all years of engines. I dont find the Delco 20 for sale anywhere. Anyway, this time I am removing the inspection cone from the bell housing and checking the throw for proper reach with a mirror.
The guys in Washington (initials HM) only want 900! (if you have to ask, you cant afford it) And folks in this economic category do not remove their own starters and just pay for the crane to come over with a rebuilt with a 5-year guarantee! (and I want the nifty gear driven starter, not the massive direct drive that almost melts the battery cables with its huge amp draw.
      Thanks again!

That leaky teaky needs a major refit by the looks of it. Why keep 2 boats?

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  8 років тому +1

Fair question. The Gulfstar was up for sale but I think just too many competing boats all in the same area and not getting a lot of bites. Right now we are thinking it is convenient to stay on for a flew days or weeks when we do some major work on the Leaky Teaky (SVDreamChaser). We won't keep both, the intent is to sell the Gulfstar for sure.

SVDreamChaser I see. You didnt explain and I find working on one boat at a time plenty satisfying so I had to ask

+ParrotSailor I find one to be at times overwhelming so two may border on insane. Lol. The good news is the Gulfstar is essentially ready to go and we cruised her for years other than the starter problems the last couple of weeks.

@@Svdreamchaser Oh. My. Goodness. Well. We got her out which was really exciting. However.. the replacement is too new and the bell housing is a inch to long!! So. our awesome friend is walking us through rebuilding it.. but we have to keep ordering pieces. Fingers crossed all the pieces will be in on Monday so we can bring our girl home from a foreign marina! I spent HOURS trying to find a replacement starter but all our numbers are out of date!!

@@LaineBones oh no. I recall when I ordered mine, the first one didn’t have the outer guard that bolts to the bell housing line up correctly. I had to get a replacement one ordered and that one matched. How odd, it must be that some of these have different mounting bolt patterns and sizes. Glad you have some local assistance too.
