  • This is a recording I was unaware of and which I discovered while clearing out some old cassette tapes. Simply marked "Reg Varney -- 13/8/76", it features the British entertainer playing piano, singing and telling jokes.
I presume this was recorded by my grandmother's third husband Arnold Coleman, apparently quite well-known as a theatre organist in the golden days of cinema when going to the movies was an event, complete with live musical entertainment. Arnold would have been in the orchestra for Varney's Australian tour. Sadly, he didn't record the complete show and this upload is all that I have, which is why it opens half-way through a joke.
For those who only know Reg Varney as a sitcom star, this concert will surprise.

I had no idea Reg Varney could play the piano and sing!

I remember him hosting a variety show on TV in the 1970's, which I think was made in Australia. It was set in a pub (for some reason "The Bull & Bush" comes to mind) and apart from other acts featured, Reg would sing and play piano on that, but it is something unexpected as he was such a great comic actor.

My friend Richard Holmes (he currently lives in West Sussex) travelled to Australia with Reg Varney as his musical director.

multi talented and didn't get the recognition he deserved. Would loved to have seen him present the generation game and he then would have been as big as Brucie. He was THAT good but didn't get the big breaks.
