I caught Roy Clark on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson many years ago. The curtain opened, and Roy played a very fast paced solo. I noticed he was doing a lot of fingering way down on the neck of the guitar. After the solo, he went over to sit and chat with Johnny. That's when we learned that as the curtain was opening, his E string broke. So he had to transpose the entire song on the fly to account for no E string. Beyond the talent required, that is the mark of a real professional.

Clark died a few years ago. Not being a country music fan, I had only heard his name. Then I watched a review by a British guitarist/music teacher. My God, I had no idea who this man was and what a legend he is. A presenter on his own live TV show, comedic, and apparently a master on anything with strings.
In a similar way I knew very little about the late Glen Campbell, except his popular songs from back in the day. Again, watching reviews by Wings of Pegasus, I realized, as with Clark, just who this man was. Shredding on a 12-string playing the William Tell Overture (with the guitar on top of his head) with a live audience, never read music but play like the legend he is. Rocker Alice Cooper in an interview said Campbell was one of the five top guitarists in the world. These two guys, and others from the past had to do it right and get it perfect - live, no auto-tune like today. I'm sorry I didn't know about them while they were alive. Fortunately for people like me, I can go to youtube channels to see Clark and Campbell at work. And I'm sure there are others I'm yet to discover. Thank you for posting this!!

Playing the Beach Boy's (because he was one for a while). He played a great version of Classical Gas on the back of his head. It was a great performance that lasted over 2.5 hours.

This is the first time I've ever seen any of your UA-cam videos. You have the kind of voice that's made for radio. In fact, when I first heard your voice it reminded me of a few late-night radio DJs from the 70s and 80s. As for Roy Clark, he was (he recently passed away) one of the greatest guitar players of all time although he could also play the banjo, fiddle, and mandolin as well as he played the guitar.

Roy Clark spent years on the tv show "Hee Haw". He was a comedian who just happened to be an amazing musician. His guitar playing is legendary. This song was written by Johnny Cash.

No, he was one of the worlds greatest musicians who happened to be a comedian. He started acting goofy on stage at a young age to help him deal with nervousness and shyness.

@@curtislong6806 I stand corrected. You are right. Didn't mean to imply he was just a simple comedian. he was a brilliant musician.

Ye gods I miss Roy so very much :D he was an amazing talent and a really impeccable showman (and his take on Johnny Cash's version is amazing) and the hysterical additions are a Roy Clarke tradition. Listen to this, obviously , the Johnny Cash one and then the Home Free one -- all distinct and each excellent!

If you listen carefully to his fingeringering on the strings as he changes cords up and down the frets, there is no dragging sounds: so very clean. I have never heard a guitarist play so clean as him. He played the banjo, ukaleighle, ect., just as efficiantly as the classical guitar. His sense of humor was impicable as well, and was spontaneous, no need to rehearse. I have no idea what his personal life was like, but as an all around musician, intertainer, commedian...par excellence! It was great to hear your reaction. Please search out other videos of him playing, and let me know what you think. Loved to watch him growing up as a kid in the late 60's and 70's. Truly sad when he passed away.

I put Roy up there with Glen Campbell in guitar ability. But I've also seen him play banjo, fiddle, and mandolin. His version of "Malaguena", recorded on the television series, "The Odd Couple ", is stunning in skill and speed.

Roy Clark was an absolute legend, and a literal virtuoso on guitar. but he also played other stringed instruments like banjo, mandolin, and the fiddle. He's probably best known for his part on the country comedy and variety show, Hee Haw, where he entertained American television audiences for 28 years. Along with another legendary country and western artist, Buck Owens.
