    This was a very under appreciated western. It came out during the Vietnam War movie craze, going up against films like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Born On The Fourth Of July. People were in a different mood. But I loved it. I am not a Kevin Kline fan but even he was good in this one.

    The first movie I saw Kevin Costner in. One of my favorite westerns. But, Goldblum was out of place in this movie.

      I thought he was a great character. The way he's introduced makes the audience suspect he will eventually ally with the good guys but he turns out to be a real bastard, arguably more vile than any of the other big bad characters.

    I really liked Jeff Goldblums character. I have to tried to figure out why he got ready to throw his knife and who he was going to aim at several times. I still think he was going to help Tyree. It would be the only reason to get involved and he was all about himself. He had no reason to help otherwise. He was thinking to get in good with the sheriff by helping the deputy.

    I never understood Goldbloom’s role in this movie. Was he a good guy or a bad guy? At times he seemed like both.

    • @christianemden7637

      He was focused exclusively on his own benefit. He thought McKendrick was winning and tried to curry favor. He never fell in the category good guy.

    I never understood why Jeff goldblum reached for his knife. Ever. He was the biggest sellout in the film and wouldn’t gain anything from saving Kevin Klines character

    • @michaels5217

      They just wanted to foreshadow it for the big scene later. Not the best job of doing that though.

    slow pace and lots of miscasting imo. Kevin Kline in a Western? Not terribly convincing. Brian Dennehy smiling his way thru another villain? Film actors know that if you say part of a line and then pause, the camera has a good chance of staying on you until you finish the line. There was a ton of that in the snippets I saw of this movie. Very self conscious and very self promoting.

    Saw this when it first came out and was pretty darned unimpressed. “Big Chill” on horseback.
    I know all western movies are actors wearing costumes, but I just couldn’t get past the impression of ‘80s actors doing ‘80s acting while dressed up old timey. Watching this clip, my impression hasn’t mellowed with age. I find myself singing the punchline from the Smothers Brothers version of “Streets of Loredo.” 🎵If you get an outfit, you can be a cowboy too.🎵

    • @michaels5217
      @michaels5217 3 місяці тому

      Actors killed it across the board. This seems more like a viewer problem only seeing 80s actors, like you can't watch Leonard Nimoy in anything but Star Trek. I was able to be in awe of Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting without going "eh, it's just Mork dressed up in regular clothes."
      Lawrence Kasdan was involved in both movies and used many of the same actors. Costner was actually the corpse in Big Chill. He made great movies in both instances.

    being an old school Western lover (I watched over 250 westerns from its golden era) I don't get the hype about this movie. It's ok, decent and "classic", but there are dozens of black and white westerns that are much better than this one

    • @christianemden7637
      @christianemden7637 3 місяці тому

      While I agree that there are many old classics that are better. There is nothing modern that is similarly good, I prefer this movie over unforgiven.

    It's funny how some westerns are totally implausible because everyone and everything is way too clean and sterile looking. It wasn't like that.
