damn he was playing so fast to notes couldn't keep up with his fingers. such an awesome guitarist musician singer, my first concert was Triumph back in 1978, Just A Game had just come out
Hey, it's my biggest guitar influence to learn to pick up my own Fender Stratocaster Cherry Red. Rocket, you are amazing! I still love him in TRIUMPH and solo times... Thanks a lot for this memory! What a wonderful guitarist!
I'd put it up against anyone from that era. In case you're not aware, their entire US Festival set is available on DVD (including DTS Surround Sound) from Amazon for 15 bucks. Just search on "triumph us festival", most definitely money well-spent.
Van Halen performed there. I believe it was earlier in the same day. I'd like to think that if I were Eddy Van Halen and I watched Triumph perform and payed very close attention to Rik, especially with this solo, I'd just witnessed I had been shown the fuck up. Rik Emmet is one of a kind! A master in rock and roll guitar playing. One of the very, very best ever guitar players.
I saw him in San Antonio at an Old mission that they turned into a performance venue, you're right there at the stage no barricades or anything like that very little security because the people that go to see Rik Emmett are trustworthy, many are apiring musicians learning from the Masters
@@wjburke11 Rock & Roll Hall of Shame...SO TRUE. They let anybody in, but have to think about it for 50 years before they induct people who REALLY belong there.
I've read in more than one place that Trumph blew VH off the stage at this festival, and if I recall correctly they were the headlining act on metal day.
I was having a "senior moment", so I just checked. 😉 This was the line-up for "Heavy Metal Day": Quiet Riot Mötley Crüe Ozzy Osbourne Judas Priest Triumph Scorpions Van Halen I also noticed from the same source that VH was paid $1.5M to perform. Taking inflation into account, today that would have been nearly 4.5M! 🤯
A bit of a weird coincidence, but I've been listening to the Scorpions quite a bit lately. This was a few years after US, but it just kicks royal ass all over the fucking place, from start to finish. 🤟 ua-cam.com/video/96mno1w3nTQ/v-deo.html
Triumph / Rik Emmett made the other bands look like amateurs on that day... That includes the mighty VH thanks to a bumbling, stumbling DLR. Just my opinion.
And you’re certainly entitled to it, music is one of the most subjective things in the world, if not THE most! Hard to believe he’s now 68, yet still very much as alive and kicking. He’s released over 20 solo and collaboration albums since he left the band in a variety of genres… Jazz, Blues, Folk, Classical, you name it. In fact, that’s the main reason he often gives for leaving Triumph, the desire to branch out to other styles (which neither his record label or band mates were willing to go along with). Like Rush, that’s one of the things I admire about him most... He does his own thing, record companies and radio airplay be damned. He's been on a touring hiatus since 2019, but published a book of poetry just last year called “Reinvention”. I’ve gotta pick that up, even sight unseen I’m sure it’s awesome. Anyway, easily one of the most talented people I’ve ever seen. Brad Delp (RIP) and Michael Sweet have some unbelievable pipes, but this guy, oh man. 😳
@@cygnus-studios Thanks for such a well informed reply. You are definitely a fan, like myself. I've been a huge Emmett fan for 40+ years now, and I've actually had the opportunity to meet him on 4 separate occasions and he was so cool each time. He's a seriously talented musician and has been such a positive influence for me for a long time.
If this were someone like Eddie Van Halen people would be saying “Sucks, overrated.” but because it’s Emmett everyone’s in awe. His playing here is honestly very sloppy, he’s much cleaner in studio.
Well, considering he is often running and playing at the same time, playing straight out of the amp with very little effect also, similar to how Nuno does it - pure, clean sound. Rik Emmett is quite highly regarded as a guitar player. Heck, the man wrote a column for guitar player magazine for over 12 years. He is a prodigy.
@@davidbieloh1382 that’s all beside the point. I’m saying if this were someone with more hype around them people would be saying it sucks. I’m well aware of his studio playing and the fact that he did a column for a guitar magazine. As I said, that’s beside the point because I’m only criticizing this performance not him as a studio musician.
Music is certainly one of the most subjective things on the planet and given that, people enjoy listening to whatever twirls their beanie. Judging by audience reaction, looks like that would include the half-million in this crowd. If on the other hand you're inferring that Emmett is some sort of sub-par musician, you need to give a listen to one of Triumph's three platinum albums or better yet check out some of his solo material. He continues to write and record at age 69, some 40 years following this performance.
Context…there was a time when we didn’t have 24/7 coverage of guitar A concert was often the only time you got to see a guitarist’s chops; we all used to go and learn as well as rock out!
What an absolute beast on the guitar!!Rik doesn't get near the recognition he deserves.
Extremely underrated!
Emmett is a monster 👹 beyond words. To be able to sing🎤, play the guitar 🎸 and write hit songs at the highest level is an amazing talent.
This guy could play circles around many of “the top ranked “
Maybe one of the best to ever play guitar!!!
Rik is an amazing talent.
Definitely one of the most underrated, not to mention those pipes of his. You should check out some of his solo albums. 💯

imagina jam off with him and Ted
Rik's picking technique is truly amazing. Perhaps he's not the first to use it but man did he ever use it to PERFECTION here!
I find he sounds rather sloppy here. Especially compared to studio. I love his playing but I find this disappointing.
amazing vocalist as well
He is moving and I think it’s a rare best talent that i have been known to see.i think radio ga ga ,live aid ,is also good and they are two
Just a genius in his prime
Uncle Ted says: "WHY isn't this guy in Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists, yet Joan Jett IS?
Because RS has their heads so far up their asses, their ears have hemorrhoids.
No shit. She's plays like a beginner.
Rolling Stone and the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame top 100 contests are BS.

I own several Triumph albums on vinyl, I’m making this statement as a fan. He is a solid player, but this is not his best.
What a f****** row, a thousand notes a minute, and not one musical.
