    System Information:
Antares is a binary star system - consisting of a red supergiant and B-Type main-sequence star - located 550 light-years away from the Sun and it is the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpius, the two stars are called Antares (Alpha Scorpii A) and Alpha Scorpii B, they have spectral types of N2Iab (M2Iab) and B2V, respectively, and masses of 11-16M☉ and 7.2M☉, respectively. The system has the Bayer designation α Scorpii (Latinised as Alpha Scorpii) and is often referred to as the "heart of the scorpion". Distinctly reddish when viewed with the naked eye, Antares is a slow irregular variable star that ranges in brightness from an apparent visual magnitude of +0.6 down to +1.6. It is on average the 15th brightest star in the night sky. Antares is the brightest and most evolved stellar member of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, the nearest to the Sun. It is in the Upper Scorpius subgroup, and illuminates the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex in its foreground.
The system consists of two stars separated by 220-529 AU, the two stars orbit around their common barycentre every 2562 years. The system is often transited by the Moon and occasionally Venus and as a whole it is around 15 Ma old.
