- A few weeks back, my Daily Driver started behaving strangely. And it did not become better. So I decided to set up a new Daily Driver, and I had to do some hard analysis and decisions.

Very interesting idea of going with Ubuntu Server and then adding what you need for Desktop use! I like it!
I used to be on Fedora for quite a few years, but after the debacle with Red Hat pulling the plug on CentOS and then disabling the public git access to the Red Hat sources, I felt dirty even using Fedora. For me it went back to Debian Stable, with quite a few Flatpaks to get some up-to-date packages like Steam, Firefox, etc.
With Debian I miss the fresher components, especially when it comes to Mesa and the general graphics stack, because I am a gamer in my free time. So I do have a feeling I might be going back to Fedora (or maybe Nobara? It's still 99,99% Fedora, but it's not called "Fedora"). Fingers crossed that some more libraries make it to Debian Backports, then I'd be truly happy!
Decisions for me were made mostly based on ideals. Seeing how the "open" Fedora is *ruled* by Red Hat, and how they have lost their way, really hurt to watch. So back to community-built distros for me!
This! I do feel the same about Fedora and Red Hat, and I have to admit, I knew about Nobara but did not have it on my list. It‘s now added… 😎 The server thing is something I did ages ago with Windows, and it worked there as well. I would have loved going with Debian, but I just don‘t like running with old components - yes, one could use Flatpaks and Backports to have most of the applications in a modern state, but the DE is not affected by this. The changes between Gnome 43 and gnome 44 are not as obvious as between the 30- and the 40-series, but still: It feels old.
That is why I typically go with Sid, and I don‘t usually mind it being somewhat unstable from time to time - with Sid I never had situations as with Arch where it got my system basically unusable (I am aware of my NVidia-habit of running it with the proprietary drivers being part of the issue 🤓), so that lead nowhere. Never tried Testing though, since I read mixed things about it.
Ubuntu is in fact also not part of my ideals, I have to admit. The way Mark Shuttleworth runs his company and treats his staff is terrifying (I know a few former Canonical employees in person), and the forced usage of Snaps p*ss me off, but I feel it is less evil that what IBM and Red Hat are doing. But yes, that is one of the unspoken things why I feel dirty. It does not feel right.
So, to be open: I doubt I will stay on Ubuntu Server for long, at least I will constantly check for alternatives. It just does not as aligned to my ideals as I want it to do.
I run linux mint as my daily driver and it has been years working great for me.
Linux Mint… Tried it several times, but I simply can not relate to the DE. I know, many like it, since it is close to what they are used from Windows, it is fast, it is stable, but it simply never really clicked with. Will give it a spin on one of the Laptops though. :-)
Great videos. Keep it going …
Thank you!
yes please show us how you did this! I would like to do the same. I believe I have very similar requirements.
Will happily do!
Awesome thanks! I also run my daily from a VM (unraid host) with gpu (3070) and usb card passthrough. Oh yeah if OBS has instructions installing Ubuntu with apt why use flatbak? I'm just curious of the benefits. @@opentaq
Hahahaha, really nice vid. I had the same feeling when I tried Kubuntu (normally I'm on Arch or Debian Testing or OpenSuse etc.) . But I have to (and did) admit it is a very good KDE spin. It's not so difficult to disable all snaps and enable flatpaks. There is a reason why they are still the biggest distro out there and it is not just for beginners (misconception). Interesting setup, I guess the vanilla Gnome set up is similar to a command line install on Debian? Just choose the package set you like and you get only that. For me an alternative to Debian Testing. Thanks for the insight!
Right, the Vanilla Gnome is basically installed the same way as on Debian, its exactly the same tool. ;-)
What about immutable options like Opensuse's Aeon and Kalpa? Or Fedora Silverblue? Vanilla OS? I wouldn't use them myself and I don't know how they work with OBS, but just curious if you looked at them. They're supposed to just work in a relatively low maintenance fashion.
Good point. Will check them out.
I didn’t have this decision to make for my daily driver, but for my home server - I love arch, but my wife prefers stability. I ended up with Ubuntu server, and am now running my VMs and containers under LXC - so smooth, repeatable, stable 😢 😂
Yes, Ubuntu Server is quite an amazing server OS. Although I typically tend to go with Debian for that, I can understand why you chose it.
Unfortunately as a gamer I haven't found any linux distro to replace my windows 11 installation. Minecraft just seems to lock up my system with 100% ram usage and i always have problems with how audio behaves in my preferred browser Firefox. Windows although the telemetry just seems the most stable OS for me.
Yepp, typical issue. You could try SteamOS, but not all titles run there. As a plan B: If you have a dedicated graphicscard, then why don‘t you install your favorite Linux distro, run Windows as VM, and use Looking Glass with it? Best of both worlds.
Ubuntu server sounds like a nice (if dirty) rational approach. I myself have been jumping between Arch and Debian (and a little mx linux) for the last few years - but kind of falling in love with NixOS currently - maybe in terms of stability, NixOS could be another option to consider?
Will have a look at it!
Ubuntu... you should feel dirty! 😜 At the moment I'm daily driving Garuda Gnome. Arch with a vanilla gnome desktop with automatic btrfs snapshots.
In fact, I am just now installing Arch. I tried, but…
I danced around fedora, debian unstable, then i landed back on arch.
Arch in my view is the easiest to use. But my next fav would be debian. Im not a fan of ubuntu, so if im goind to install something from scratch, id prefer arch because the package manager for me is easier to use. But nice video.
Jepp, totally understand that. I use Arch pretty much everywhere, but it can be a bit annoying on a Does-always-have-to-Work-system - although I have to admit, that a lot people run it without any issues, and its always me having the issues. 😵💫
@@opentaq to be honest, I've never had it break, although I know are PPl don't share my experience.
I am one of these. 🤣
But don't get me wrong: Arch IS my favourite distro, and I never had such issues with it running on ThinkPad or Framework Laptop. I assume it is a combination of factors (including me as a person) that probably made it become sluggish.
As a non obs user i can't relate to most of you problems but i had a good laugh listening to your reasoning nevertheless.
Interesting approach but I have a naive question. Would replacing Ubuntu server with Debian server not worked ?
Good question. But no, would not have worked. Ubuntu is based upon Debian, but is - as far as the non-LTS-versions are considered - way more up-to-date. And it has a lot of things already built in, which would not be present with Debian, or which I would have had to install and configure later on.
i feel dirty after watching this video
I ran fedora silverblue
Fedora is not my kind of taste anymore, although I mainly made good experiences with it. It is just I totally dislike Red Hat, so I try to circumvent Fedora, since it partially serves as a Beta-testing environment for RHEL.
@@opentaq to each his own.
@@opentaq well to each is own. I have been a linux user for 5 years but I am still a newby. I used to be a MCSA and had many Microsoft certifications, but I am tired of fixing computers, clean viruses, etc. For that reason, I dont want to learn how Linux works under the hood, I dont care where the distribution is coming from, as long as it is stable, and functional. Of the pass distros that I used (Debian, opensuse, ubuntu, vanilaOS, Manjaro, Elementary OS, Linuxmint) I find that Fedora is the most graphically clean and crispy clean and clear vs others that look washed out. With silverblue, I never had to fix or worry about anything. I dont want to tinker. My only regret is that I wish that Gnome was as beautiful as Mac.If it gets to the point that Linux is not evolving fast enough on the desktop, I will leave Linux to Mac ( a go between, best of both world in some regards)
Totally get it. In fact, I like tinkering a bit - but in the end, it needs to work both with regards to productivity and optics. I admit, I am a bit more political on that, but that has to do with my main job of running a company being centered around true open source and cloud-native software. So I obviously have a different perspective on things, but again: I totally understand your views.
At least you didn't go with Windows!
THAT was never a consideration.
@@opentaq I'm an openSUSE user myself. But it was too good of a line not to drop here!
It is still on my shortlist. Will try it out the other day.
Hilarious! ❤😂🎉
It was quite a journey. 🥸
I would have understood his discomfort if he went to Microsoft or something.
Why was the video on my list?
I hate Yast too
