I know you mentioned there isn't any english apps that you know of but what about just a foreigner bringing their iphone using vpn and using google maps? How well does that work?
Yes it can, however unfortunately it's all in Chinese no English for those apps available. You can use the metro app explore Shanghai, it Shows your which metro stop is at the maglev
I’d still recommend using Baidu map. Even it’s in Chinese, you may need someone to translate at the beginning. Once you’re familiar with its functions, you can always tell by different icons to choose which transportation you want to use and the estimated time needed. It’s super useful esp. when you use the public transportation. Path planning will automatically put travel time & transportation open hour into consideration. It can also show real time bus location down to the minute on when your bus/train will arrive, and whether there’re any bus afterwards if you miss current one. You can also use it to plan a trip for a future day. It’s quite helpful if you’re new to a place and know nothing about the traffic peak.
@antonyip sounds truly wonderful but again if it's in Chinese then how can it be useful to a non Chinese speaker. I'm in China now and I have tried using Amap by doing a screenshot etc and then putting the photo through a translation app sure it kinda works but you lose all the dynamism of the app

Baidu map is really useful. Besides, I found that there exist an English veison of Baidu map in an app called Immersive Translate. Amazing.😂

Google maps data is outdated and therefore frustrating to use, iPhone imap or however is called works without vpn just fine in China.

Yes Didi has the function to order a taxi in the evening e.g. for the next morning.

Do you need to download these apps before you go to China or you can download them when you are in China?
You can download when you are in China
The VPN must be downloaded and set-up before going to china, all others can do when arrived. But again VPN BEFORE you enter China
