  • Chandler had a week of winter this year. We reached freezing and just below freezing overnight lows immediately after rain. Sigh.... Take a walk with me through Cookie's entire garden and all the shade spaces to check who survived. We'll also have an unofficial check-in on the seedlings from the series "A Lazy Way to Grow Cactus from Seed".
    Here's the link to my segment on ‪@gtnursery‬ 's annual live show & tell on Instagram: tvC1xzXO1v...
    That was the last time I checked on the plants before the freeze came in.

    The Ortegocactus macdougallii is known for those rust spots. In the wild, those spots help it blend into it's background. It mimicks native lichen. Some people don't like those spots, but I think it's really cool on this particular species. You're doing a great job Jenny! Thank you for posting

      That is so interesting! Thank you for sharing this information! The rust has gotten even worse over the past couple of weeks since this video was recorded. I just recorded a follow-up on the outbreak 😬. Thank you so much for the support and encouragement!

    I am amazed you can remember er all the names of your plants….love your videos. I am a big fan. Keep up the good work. You were the one who inspired me to start collecting Ariocarpus. Although they are very very sensitive to rot I love them! Thank you.

      Wowowowow, that is so awesome that you got inspired to start collecting Ariocarpus because of me! Aren't they just fascinatingly strangely beautiful plants? Have you had any flower yet? And that's so funny I always think I forgot so many plant names when I'm recording like this!

    The espostoa grows in the mountain somewhere if I remember correctly the hair is to protect from the sun, but also cold I think. I have a tiny one too, love the thick layer of floof haha.

      Or at least it can grow in mountains, everything above 100 meters above sea level is mountain to me living in a country where most of the land is under sea level 😂

    Really enjoyed the walk with you in England we get a lot of rain and wind with some frost throne in it makes it fun

      Ahh now I see you're in England! You can ignore my question from your other comment, lol. How do you keep your plants? Do you have a greenhouse? I watch Desert Plants of Avalon and marvel at how she grows cactus and succulents in Ireland.

    I'm surprised at a few of those! Like some of the Euphorbias!! Here in the Ozarks, we had temperatures of - 6°F at night & 3° to 12°F during the day. Had to bring a bunch of my Euphorbias inside the house. I have some plants over 40 years old. I heat my greenhouse with a wood stove. The lowest it got was 42° inside. Burnt a lot of wood that week. I imagine this is your part of the same vortex . It's amazing what can make it if they are dry!! Glad to see you came through good!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Arizona, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants ✌️💖🌵🌷🌴🌸🌿🌻🍀🌾💐🌱🌳🌹🪴😃👍

    My favorite Adenium bounced back really nice after a surprise freeze and wound up looking like it was carefully cut back. For sure keep that one.

    Ha! 32 is nowhere near cold! Many deserts can see teen temps and some go down to single digits. There's a mountain in New Mexico with lots of cacti including echinocerues, the all-time low was -36 F.

    The Lophophora Williamsii that I have in the green house got down to 27F and they made it through,... it was only 6F that night outside and the greenhouse kept things from frosting so everything except my M. Heyderi, a 30 year old specimen found in T or C New Mexico... its freaking dead, but its the only one, all of my Trychocereus are fine and all of my Perodia are good,... I was so scared that I lost the whole crop and then they all pulled through except one.... Thank goodness most of them make it! thanks for sharing your learning experience!

      @cookiescacti  5 місяців тому

      Thank goodness it was only one gone to the afterlife. But it still hurts nonetheless RIP old M. heyderi. That's incredible how well all the other cactus took that cold!

    My cactus spend the winter in the basement under lights, so freezing is not a problem. I did lose two plants during shipping last month even with heat packs. Temperatures in upper Michigan are way above normal and the snow cover is going, so I am more worried about outside plants thinking it's spring at the end of January. I'm glad all but one of your plants seem to have survived the cold snap. Cloth covers work pretty well except for extreme cold. Good luck for the rest of the winter.

      This is at least the third time I've heard from someone across the country that it has been unusually warm... It's the same here. It was probably near 80 this afternoon and I'm just looking at the plants like they're going to wake up in January thinking that it's March... Good luck to you too my friend! Stay warm (or should I say stay cool??)

    I’m in Mesa, I didn’t cover any of mine. All I did was bring my Hoyas in. I have snake plants, syngonium, elephant bush, lots of cactus and euphoria out there and everything survived 😅

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  5 місяців тому +1

      I have snake plants outside too! And they're doing perfectly fine. I'm really glad to know you also leave your succulents outside with no cover. Any issues with rust fungus this winter?

    I would remove those pads on the prickly pear that are discolored like that. Looks like the start of rot

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  5 місяців тому

      That's interesting if that's rot starting that high on the pads but then I don't know anything about Opuntia problems. I wonder if it's some type of fungal infection. I've left it for the time being just to see what happens

    For the smaller cactus that you put in the ground, how do you keep them watered in the summer?

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  6 місяців тому +1

      I water the landscape plants by putting the hose on the ground and just letting the water run and soak. So they all get water like that. The area where the brittle bush is my neighbor has plants that they often water on the other side of the fence, so the plants also get the neighbor's water as well. I think that's why the brittle bush has grown into a monster. They're not supposed to get that big!

    How cold did you leave your uphorbias in if you don’t mind me asking I collect and was wondering

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  6 місяців тому +1

      I left all the euphorbia outside except the obesas. The obesas were hating our summer so I brought them inside and then left them inside. Our temperatures got into the high 20s F at the absolute lowest. The ones outdoor seem to be doing okay, although they're all under a shade cloth structure.
