One of the Best years for original screenplay, all 5 of the films where worthy of the award.
zachary goodwin or the worst
Evrey movie without "American beauty" was good that year.
What a great year for original screenplays. Too bad there's only one winner :-(
PTA's reaction at 2:03 is priceless
He knew he had no chance of winning. Just happy to be there.
Fiona Apple is like "now that you lost, can we go?"
😂
I legitimately wish it was a tie between American Beauty and Magnolia. Both some of the best screenplays ever written.
I would've made it a three-way tie with Sixth Sense. Face it, if Shyamalan won, perhaps he wouldn't have gone through that downward spiral in the late 2000s-early 2010s.
Magnolia a close second, but Magnolia was too convoluted to be as accessible as American Beauty was to as many people.
xD HAHAHA.... P.T. Anderson's face xD
I really liked American Beauty but my choice would have been Magnolia. An absolutely stunning film, making you deeply invested in and intrigued by a whole cast of characters.
2019: What a stacked year for original screenplays!
1999: Hold my beer
There’ve been plenty of original screenplays over the years
@@joewhitehead3 I agree, but 2019 was pretty stacked. Parasite, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Knives out, 1917. Probably one the best (if not the best) year for original screenplays of the 2010's.
Ryan Crawford It’s definitely up there
@@ryancrawford3413Looking back I think 1917 sticks out like a sore thumb.
PTA should have won for Magnolia.
What a year!!!
Sergio B what a lovely year
Holy shit PTA would have won for Magnolia, that is one hell of a brilliant screenplay.
landondonovanify I wish it was a tie between this and American Beauty. They're both some of the best scripts ever written.
american beauty was better
no sis. American Beauty is WAY better, and it's already a classic. and Magnolia has aged like milk.
O Tom damn that was a good response LOL
@@otom3487 magnolia aged like milk??? Really??
4:13 - LOL at Benigni being ignored by Spacey.
Ha, you buffoon! I'm gonna show you what a real Best Actor win looks like!
American Beauty was brilliant!
"That plastic bag in front of world trade center"
Seriously. A year before shit went down.
Love the awkward close-up of Mike Leigh’s notes because he famously doesn’t write screenplays.
"Thank you so much, I... wow, this is heavy!" classical award acceptance speech intro
Being John Malkovich had one of the best screenplays of all time
American Beauty deserved it more imo
American Beauty IS AMAZING.
Probably the best screenplay of all time
The Dude false, American Beauty was one of the worst movies of 1999
LMAO literally bye
Finding nemo is
Diego Pisfil major cap
Uh, no....
I would've given the award to ANY of those contenders except Mike Leigh. One of the best years for movies period.
Indeed. I would replace him for ''The Matrix''. A philosophical screenplay.

American beauty is a rare gem
Brilliant presentation!!! I can feel the emotion of all of these writers!!!
Although it was rather melancholy, American Beauty was a seamless, almost perfect screenplay - Ball was a deserving winner.
Congrats Alan Ball for winning an Oscar for your screenplay in “American Beauty”. 😀
Back when I still liked and watched motion pictures in a movie theater. ‘Twas one of my favorite things. A way of life. No more.
Holy shit it's Fiona Apple next to P. T. Anderson
They were dating so yeah, also love Fiona Apple and P. T. Anderson
3:09. Maybe I'm looking into this too much, but it seems like Fiona Apple is trying to calm PT Anderson down due to a previous incident two years earlier in which he threw a chair across the room after he lost best original screenplay to Matt Damon.
Yesss
And then he went on to create best TV series with the most satisfying end
All 5 were great and brilliantly written, and American Beauty rightfully won. But out of the nominees, Being John Malkovich & The Sixth Sense had the best ‘Original concepts’ (people getting to be a celebrity for a while/a therapist helping a kid who sees dead people)
El Oscar debió ser para kaufman o para Anderson o shamala pero american beauty es un clásico de los 90
American Beauty has great screenplay.
Fiona Apple isn't a fan of American Beauty, I'm guessing!
lol
She was dating PT Anderson at the time. He was nominated, and lost, for "Magnolia". She was all sad for him. After all these years, I never forgot that shot at 3:09 where she looks sadly at him and he seems kinda crushed and pissed at the same time. He still hasn't won. He's like a younger Scorsese....It'll take forever...
@@dkelly26666 In 2000, William Goldman who says it real about screenwriters who don't get things done right with projects very seriously and being replaced by others with a lot of experience with
do to so: "They were pissing them off for decades."
Oh dear, such great nominees.
American Beauty totally deserved it
I have to accept that American Beauty it’s in my top 3 favourite movies of all time and its screenplay it’s perfect but Magnolia which is in my top 5 favourite movies of all time, have a better and more perfect screenplay
shit so many iconic movies that year! magnolia, being john malkovich and american beauty lol
M. KNIGHT Shyamalan? xD
+YoungFrankenstein
It stands for Meta Knight
Such contenders!!!!
A FABULOUS SCREENPLAY. SECOND TO NONE.
Excelente roteiro! Merecido.
Um dos melhores filmes que eu vi.
Lol, they wrote M. Knight Shyamalan
Love alan ball.... True genius
He looks like Michael Keaton
Sou muito fã do trabalho de Alan Ball é amo o filme Beleza Americana❤❤❤saudações do Brasil🇧🇷🇧🇷
The Sixth Sense
Mike Leigh “can we leave now?”
The quality of this is amazing for how old it is . Alan ball is a genius!
Fax
2:04 Paul Thomas Anderson 😲 hahahha
Being John Malkovich was totally shat on and it was hands down best movie out of 99
How freakin' eerie that he mentions the plastic bag in front of the World Trade Center one year before...
Alan Ball wrote American Beauty and Six Feet Under. Enough said.
Fucking Right. Have been following everything he does ever since.
I don't understand contemporary discourse these couple of years that tries to dismantle American Beauty as bad film and error of critics in 2000 who praised it/made it important. That's stupid. American Beauty is fascinating and even innovative film, along with other Ball's work as e.g. Six feet under, which is even more important for golden age of television. And that just proves that Alan Ball is talented and not just one hit wonder or even something less.
everybody looks sooooo nervous haha
Love you Mel Male Mall Gibson
imagine having PTA and kaufman in the same category and neither win
1:59
PTA’s reaction 😭😭😭
American Beauty is nice, but I would've voted for Paul, then Charlie Kaufman, Shyamalan and only then Alan Ball. I think AB is good because of Spacey's performance, not screenplay or direction (even though they're not bad).
When I was in the 5th grade watching Family Guy, I never understood the chicken coming out of cheerleaders breasts. I finally watched American Beauty 10 years later and it all made sense lol…
Alan should tell stories for all eternity. He later would go on to direct himself in his other films and TV shows and be very influenced by Sam Mendes' work on American Beauty. It's a scandal Alan did so few movies and TV shows compared to people like Ryan Murphy who create formats non stop. I guess good things are quality and non quantity.
Six Feet Under is a masterpiece
@@paperchasindude6578 loved that show too. He also adapted True Blood from a book to 1hr TV dramatic series. The 1st 3 seasons are worth watching if you like vampires, werewolves and fairies 🧚♂️🧚♀️ .. Alan left as show runner at the end of season 5. The show lost major steam in season 5 and it felt like the writers were sadly mailing it in. Truthfully season 6 it was pretty embarrassing. It’s like how was that still the same show?
Anyway I have always admired his writing and creative dialogue. His characters always had great interaction with each other with meaningful conversations. I’m curious what he is up too in 2022-23
Being John Malkovich and Magnolia were way better than American Beauty
Anyone ever notice that Alan Ball looks like a cross between Kevin Spacey and Chris Cooper(Colonel Fitts)?
COINCIDENCE ?
3:29 hmm
Alan Ball is tall.
I'm guessing Mike Leigh did not like American Beauty.
I don't know about *best* but surely Being John Malkovich should have won *most* original screenplay.
Mel looks handsome
m night shamalon should have won
Fiona's reaction sent me
and what about Matrix?
Is it just me or does he literally sound like Kevin spacey narrating American Beauty???
Although it didn’t make sense, why didn’t m night shyMalan win an osca
Everyone from american beauty won except Annette Benning
why can't Alan Ball and Charlie Kaufman won at the same time :(
"Being John Malkovich" should have walked away with this.
SHOULD'VE BEEN BEING JOHN MALKOVICH :(
The sixth sense was robbed of the screenplay oscar
Being John Malkovich was way better
Alan ball got lucky. Either Charlie Kaufman should’ve won for “Being John Malkovich” or M. Night Shamalyan should’ve won for “The Sixth Sense”
No way ! American beauty was a unique masterpiece!
Alan Ball got lucky when he won for "American Beauty." He also want to give thanks to
the LGBT community with strong voices, hearts, minds and hands with all their love &
support. He would like dedicated to the Desilu family: Lucille Ball, Gary Morton,
Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and Gale Gordon - although they were no longer by
their side, but forever in their hearts.
Your name is very awkward
Have you notice how Mel Gibson react to Alan Ball who is a gay person?
Back when I watched all Oscar nominated movies. Its all trash now.
You didn’t like any of the nominated movies from the last few years?
The Sixth Sense was such a great movie, just well done. Now after more than 20 yrs, it’s actually a cult classic as it should be.
