It's a rare thing indeed for me to find something about the Spyro series that I never knew about, being an avid, long-time fan of the series since my early childhood, but this was an incredibly pleasant surprise! At long last, the mystery of bipedal dragons and the absence of female dragons has been solved, Elora initially being a centaur was a HUGE surprise, and the absolute LUNACY of Amish dolphin riders had me wheezing. This was a terrific video, CGE! Thanks!
OK, I'm genuinely surprised! When you said this video would have 10 things we may not have known, I wasn't sure just how many of those would actually be new to me. But I was pleasantly surprised by how much information in this video which I didn't already know. Great job CGE, I'm liking this style of video. The start of your 'evergreen approach' to your videos is actually a really promising sign!
Same here, also very surprised on the Facts CGE brought in, like MoneyBags redesign to Spyro 2 recycling a cut Spyro 1 boss area for a world in the sequel. Very cool stuff. 👍
you prolly dont care at all but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot the login password. I love any tricks you can offer me.
@Elijah Roman I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
How dare you laugh at the masterpiece "Girl With A Stick"! Don't you know it got an 5/10 from IGN? (They said it had too much stick and not enough story!) I'm only joking of course. I found the game to be far too *wooden!*
Honestly, I reserve the right for a slow clap if the female dragons turn out to be behind Artisan's castle door. Right under our noses and we saw nothing coming ;7
I love videos like this. Videos that deep dive into nostalgic games of our childhood but from a different perspective on how they were made and trivia during development. I'd never have guessed such lovable games could've been made so quickly but didn't FEEL rushed.
The dragons are not bipedal in the first game. They are like bears, they walk on all fours and can stand up at times if they like. There are even dragons you rescue that do stay on all fours. This is what bugged me about the reignited remake.
Then you either did not play reignited, have poor reading comprehension, or just trolling: The dragons in reignited are not faithful to the original. They stand upright on two legs dedicatedly and even have cloths designed around this bipedal setup.
This made me think about how people didn't like the idea of multiple playable side characters in Spyro 3 but it was a huge feature in the newest crash game and people loved it. It just shows how time changes things
While playing reignited I made my own theory (from a designer point of view) Spyro is a "kid" dragon, that would explain why he still can't stand on two legs or fly, because of the weight of his head (same reason babies can't walk or run until they're a little older).
Hmm. The fact Insomniac games were able to crack out 3 games back to back each year is insane yet incredible. Seems like trying to do that nowadays is impossible without being discovered by news outlets, having article headlines with Forced developer Crunch.
I would say nowadays devs tend to focus too much on graphics instead of style and creative use of technology. Spyro Re-Ignited have imo less expresive characters and not so memoriable characters as original, due to this.
This was all very interesting. I'm not sure how much of this I knew, nothing really rings a bell, though I feel I may have heard about 1 or 2 things over the years, but it's all feels largely new. I had no idea the development process for the original trilogy was so hectic and difficult, though; honestly, I thought they were able to get 1 game out per year simply because game development back then was so much easier than it is nowadays, hence why companies were able to consistently get games out every 1-2 years, instead of the 3-4+ it takes nowadays... All things considered, it's pretty amazing the original trilogy turned out as great as it did. That truly is a testament to Insomniac's skill!
I can just imagine ActiVision watching this and coming up with all sorts of ideas for Spyro 4. Also, that part about Spyro 4 not being planned? Crash probably went down that road too, and look where that got him today, right?
I cannot fathom how amazingly talented Oliver and Insomniac were in working around the limitations of the time to deliver something truly special for the world. Amazing geniuses. Great video, and great to see Oliver sharing so much with you!
i think one of the reasons, that it did seem like no revisions were made for the spyro games, is because of it being a fantasy-inspired game series. no one can say that a design is unrefined, when the entire game is unrealistic.
Crystal Forest? Maybe in a future game, a level will take place in a forest beneath the floating islands. And I think it's high time we meet not only the Aquafier and Machinist castes, but the lady dragons as well.
This is exactly the kind of content we would never get if people didn't ask. You do such a good job reaching out and finding the information. I'm so glad you don't assume that it's impossible to ask the original creator's questions. I've seen the art before. But it's good to have the story behind it.
indeed. Tho bit shame they didn't put longer dialogs with those, as some of them just deliver 1 line and you cannot appreciate their design. Because on PSX they're just very limited models, so short exposure was justified. Maybe some additonal menu in guidebook to check models would be nice. Imo would be better if devs decided to tweak some features, instead of just copy-paste original. Fingers crossed for new Spyro, like Crash got.
Here's another Spyro fact you didn't know... My nephew's first Spyro experience was on his other aunt's Switch. She took it home with her, but he demanded to play Spyro. While trying to placate him with the original instead of Reignited, he has taken to calling Reignited "the REAL Spyro," and makes sure I understand that I am wrong.

actually, CGE, i've known about elora's original appearance for a long time now. love your videos. also: the fact she was changed from a centauress into a faun, was because they thought she'd look cuter

Talent? It is nothing about talent. It is all about skill, discipline and perseverance. Bloody good job on developing 3 games in such a short span, just shows how much training the team got under their belts before they tackled such projects.
Came here to say this, all of the known prototypes call Gnasty's World the Machinists and I'm pretty sure the developers themselves have mentioned it a number of times too. It's not even remotely speculation at this point lmao.

actually, CGE, i've known about elora's original appearance for a long time now. love your videos. also: the fact she was changed from a centauress into a faun, was because they thought she'd look cuter
hello!!Some of these ( like the limitate of polygons beging the cause of the lack of female dragons) I was aware because a friend of mine could contact Oliver Wade 2 years before, but it really good to revive these facts again and you telling for more fans to know, about of favorite purple boy, specialy it lovely to see a drawing from Wade of Centaur Elora! but I did't know about Monybags beging original a Rynoc or the fact of the Machines and aquafires!!! but yes about the boss sea dragon.
also , I don't know if Oliver toll you but, Oliver toll my friend that Spyro parents die in a attact form Gnasty Gnorc, the same from the start first game, when he put the dragons into statues, some of the dragons did't survive and one of them were Spyro Parents :C

Fantastic insights here, CGE!!
That's was amazing and interesting fact, Chico Canada (Canadian Guy)
Talent? It is nothing about talent. It is all about skill, discipline and perseverance. Bloody good job on developing 3 games in such a short span, just shows how much training the team got under their belts before they tackled such projects.
3:58 This is not speculation. Se 37:05 of Let's Play Spyro the Dragon Prototype part 5 by
CrystalFissure.
Came here to say this, all of the known prototypes call Gnasty's World the Machinists and I'm pretty sure the developers themselves have mentioned it a number of times too. It's not even remotely speculation at this point lmao.
didn't know many of the sequel facts at all, but i had heard the rhino moneybags one recently, and I did fanart based on the aquifiers/machinists way back when I got my presskit in 2009 lol, thanks for sharing cge!
Well, it's great to know.
