These college kids do Not know what they're talking about. I'm 63 years old, my dad was born in rural Alabama during the Great Depression. No running water or electricity, outhouse, lard sandwiches for school lunches, cardboard in the bottom of shoes when soles wearing out, etc., etc. He had NO "white priviledge". Worked hard in school, ended up with a scholarship & worked his way (took 6 years) through college. I had no "white priviledge", we were definitely below the poverty line as my dad was a Pastor of a small church. Had a paper route by the age of 10 - worked since then and all through college. No "White Priviledge" here.

    • @bobprivate8575
      @bobprivate8575 15 днів тому +6

By 1945, 70% of Americans had electricity to their homes. For financial reasons, the areas that were electrified first, were the urban centers. Last were the farmlands. Considering where black people tend to live, and where white people tend to live, this meant that black people tended to get electricity before white people.
Like you, I have a parent who didn't have electricity as a child. That means no running water, and fetching pails of water from the well. Heat via a woodburning stove in the kitchen.
People today, whining about priviledge into their smartphones is mind-blowing.

Okay, I went to school south of there, at UT Pan Am, now UT Rio Grande Valley. It is one of the least diverse schools in the country - over 90% Hispanic, about 5.5% white, very few black students. And the dirty truth in Hispanic culture is that the lighter your skin, the more respect you receive. As a white girl, Hispanic people listened to me when they wouldn’t listen to a Hispanic girl. I started using my power to help others. It was crazy. I was chosen for a seasonal job with a wealthy Mexican family (actually Mexican citizens) who had a second house in McAllen, TX because I was white, and it was a status symbol to have a white girl decorating their house for them. I was told that. So, consider that a lot of these people were Mexican-American, closer to Mexico, and so understand the privilege being white confers in their culture.

I think you should be proud of where you come from or what country you live in? I’m from South Africa but I reside in the UK and I will be honest that I am more proud to be British than South African because of the past that South Africa has. My parents weren’t wealthy and we were taught that if we wanted something in this world we had to work for it. In answer to your question I think this is the reason why all these Millennials from wealthy families don’t get accepted into colleges or universities because everything has been handed to them and they are lazy. That’s what it Boyles down to. I have to admit as well that I love that saying “ Land of the Free and Home of the brave”. America is supposed to be a free country and so is England England but yet we are all restricted by the government and rules and regulations made up by said government that doesn’t make us free. There is a song by a band and in the song one of the lyrics says that if you think America is free, then walk into 7-Eleven and take a pi$$ on the cheese and then see how free you are. We have it right here in the UK as well. 82% of university graduates in the UK cannot find a job in their field of study because those jobs have already been taken. I think the same goes for America as well.

I'm personally not a fan of saying I'm proud of *being* something. I think we should be proud of our actions, not things that happen to be true about us. That's sort of why I can understand someone not wanting to say they're proud. But maybe that's just my way of seeing it.
I'm not American but that's why, rather than talking about pride, I think I would phrase it as "I am privileged to be an American."
By phrasing it that way, it acknowledges that you're in a good place overall - especially in comparison to other places that might not be as nice. It doesn't preclude having complaints of course, since things can always be better. But it starts off with acknowledging the positives.

Why shouldn't you take bride in a history of people trying to constantly be more free, give more rights to people and literally fought the tyranny of a king and gave the power to the people in the form of a republic and enshrined our God given rights in the bill of rights when they could have tried to grab power and done far more evil things. George Washington is a great example people wanted him to remain as a possible king or at least a third term and he stepped down in fear of the power. Along with the heritage of hard work, individualism instead of collectivism making people responsible for our own actions instead of punishing and hating on a group's identity and all the inventions and hard work people of all backgrounds did to make this great country. The pride here is night in something you did but there were people before you arriving to give you this and you have something and a responsibility to carry it forward. There is a measure of good pride. Being proud of good redeemable actions and things of worth but not allowing that sense of gratification consume you. Otherwise we could not be proud in a day's hard work or our efforts put forth in a sports game. It's similar to that having pride in this country's efforts put forth so far. There are many things no other country has done that are robe commended and remembered.

I personally don't believe in being proud of things I have no control over, for example my skin-tone, ethnicity, sex, or nationality.
But I am thankful for being an American. I'm thankful for being born and raised in a country and culture that doesn't force me into an unwanted marriage, or make me cover my body head to toe in public, or punish me if I'm out in the street without a man escorting me.
Here in America, I can marry whoever I want, believe in whatever I want, wear whatever I want, work whatever job I want (given my skills and the availability of said job) and speak against whatever I want.
I am very grateful, and I want to preserve those freedoms for the next generations to come, not tear them down for some ambiguous new system that noone even has a good grasp of yet.

Most of your country kids are suffering through survivor's guilt, they can't just openly say they're proud of what they got cause they feel had better than the rest of the world. They feel like they're a horrible person for enjoying what they got while others country had it worse, they feel like being privileged means they're obliged to help those that doesn't.
As someone from third world country let me tell you what, we're clawing our way to the top and only fools expect those above them to lend a hand while doing nothing. We're not in such horrible position we need help from another country on the other side of the planet.

8:15 to answer your question: I assume it comes due to different factors. One that I mostly believe is that in numbers, more Asians go to college (sometimes big name colleges) than whites do.
Of course white people are a big majority, and Asians are a minority in America. But the numbers of people who have studied in college and those who haven’t or don’t have a clear difference in each of these two races.
So that is one factor. Of course there’s plenty of other factors that contribute to the fact that Asian-Americans are on top of the earnings per capita (by race) in the U.S.

No white people are pure white. We are all such a mix of cultures that we don’t have just one culture. I’m German, French, Irish, American Indian and who knows what else. So white is usually not white. I have never had privilege and neither has any member of my family. We have been poor or middle class throughout my family’s history.

I would like to know how people can say you think this, you do this, you like this, you agree with this?
These people have no clue what people go through in their lives.
It's the constant clumping people in categories and saying, well this is you.
I think of myself as an individual, nobody speaks for me but me.
