i can understand the frustration some people feel when waiters mess up the order. you work hard all day and want to unwind by eating your favorite food. you tell waiter exactly what you want and how you want it. guess what they mess it up. sometimes you deal with it patiently and sometimes you're having a bad day and you lose your cool
i was in a Chinese restaurant once when I woman talk to the waitress like that. The cook/owner came out and took the food and dumped it in the cart, cleared the table and told the people to get out and never come back. Everybody else cheered for him. It was a great scene.

I remember last year we had someone so rude and angry that it made our waiter cry. Boss took up the table, handled everything for them, and any other time they came in. She never asked any other waiterstaff or food runners to tend to their table ever but said that she would handle it completely. They came maybe two more times and we havent seen them since. Since it was our boss who didnt want to drive away even rude customers, she stepped up and took care of them herself and never asked any of us to deal with them. She protects us and takes the blows for us whenever a customer is angry and has alleviated a lot of verbal abuse with calmness and a caring tone

Thanks, I am always confused why someone would always make a fuss over something to the waiter and someone i know always reminds them about her order when they bring their food and never bother to say thank you to them. Like you said, maybe it's a subconscious desire to exert power over somebody? I personally don't like to do that. At most, i don't come back to their place. However i always make sure to say thanks to the waiter who brings my food and drink, even to the point of interrupting my conversation with friends. My father, who is a fan of Robert De Niro personally drilled that behavior to me and i adopted it for life after watching the shark tales as kid😂

Had a customer like this when I was working at a roadside diner. We heard yelling and then the waitress came into the kitchen visibly holding back tears. Unfortunately for the Karen in question my coworker was an old bear of a Greek. Dude didn't even ask what had happened, just calmly asked what table then marched out. The absolute verbal asskicking she got before he threw her out was some of the most satisfying shit I've seen in this business. She kept stammering about a refund too, and he just happily told her she should have thought about that before verbally abusing our staff over an imaginary issue.

This is why my interviews always include a meal. I see how you treat people in the customer and hospitality world. Those are your true colors. Yeah I even fly you out and book a hotel. I ask the airport, hotel, car service, restaurants, security at work to my assistant. That is your true interview. I didn't give you time unless you are already qualified but they give me notes. All those people, I deal with almost everyday.

I treat the interview process as a "date". It is a life changing relationship, we both have to like each other. You decided to apply and I have to show you a good environment. This is the exact reason I quit my job at Texasroadhouse. I had one lady who absolutely lost it and kept berating me because her food didn’t come out how she wanted it. She literally said I shouldn’t be a server because I’m “sooo incompetent” What broke me was when she said I didn’t hand her back the correct change. She couldn’t understand basic math and even after writing it out to her she still thought I was stealing money from her. She mentioned if I can’t do basic math I shouldn’t be a server. Lady I’m a Junior mechanical engineering student, finished calculus 1,2,3 and differential equations. I can do basic math… My manager agreed my math was right, but because she was causing a scene he refunded her $2 out of his pocket. I quit right after that. Both my manager and that lady made me hate working as a server. My mental health is more important.

My grandfather was in the Camorra family (Italian mafia in Naples, It) When he came here to the states, one of the things I remember most about him, was him telling me to treat the staff like the CEO. Always have money in your hand when you shake their hands. These people are the lifeblood of the company and are treated like shit by most people. Never look down on them. Never complain, but if someone goes above and beyond... let their manager know. Acting in this way gives you the best service, the best quality food & drink, and loyalty.

It's just a movie scene but people act just as entitled irl. One time a coworker made a milkshake with too much milk and not enough ice cream so it was runny. I was the one handing it to the customer and she freaked out on me saying it wasn't safe to serve and shame on us for giving out "unsafe" milkshakes. She threatened to pour the shake on the counter and refused any drink replacements or a remake, demanding we give her a burger instead. I had to get my manager for approval and she called me rude and said I should be fired. Then she called the store later that day to demand once again that I be fired. Luckily my manager just told her if there's nothing she'd like to resolve the situation then we can't do anything for her. Some people act crazy just because they can.

I’m a server! Each one of us has a section (5 tables) but when the restaurant is full, the host start sitting customers at the bar and we don’t know if we are supposed to serve them, the host needs to tell us. One day the host forgot to tell the other server right away that he has new customers. The server didn’t want the customers, he was too busy already, so I took them, even tho they were not supposed to be mine and I was extremely busy too. When I greet them they were incredibly rude. I went back to the host and told him: well I’m not taking them either! I’m not going to serve people that are treating me like shit! So I didn’t. We work in a buffet, so they ate. When they finish they came up to my manager and told him that they were not paying because I didn’t serve them. My manager said: ok! They didn’t pay and left. My manager came up to me and said: good job, I hate people like that. Sorry for my writing, English is not my first language.

This is actually how people act. I had someone throw a whole fit calling me names and incompetent because I told him what he wanted was no longer an option on our menu. Even his wife was telling him to stop. He was lucky I was newer and didn’t know my manager would have kicked him out for how he was treating me.

refusing service is a right that server hold, further and beyond, any manager is an owner representative, so manager hold the power of calling police to deliver a trespass notice and remove the people from property without need to notify the client, next time, call the manager and the police... easy and nice.

Last week I had a woman yell at me - and I mean YELL (hands in my face, spit going everywhere, the works) - over a mistake that she made. She ordered a cheesburger but when I brought it out she went off and said I took the order wrong (I read the order back to her before putting it in, she was lying). So she just went on and on about how much I suck at my job even though I apologized and offered to take it back and "fix" her order. Manager came out and she lied to him, too. He saw through it, but there wasn't really any way to prove her wrong so he had to take it off her bill. UNTIL the table next to her spoke up and said she was a biatch and lied through her fake teeth 😂

When I was younger, probably around 6 or 7, my father taught us a valuable lesson and that is to respect servers by telling us a story while he was working as one. He told me and my sisters there was once an extremely rude customer who disrespected his co-worker and downright humiliated and insulted him just because she didn’t like her food. My father’s co-worker was still very respectful in front of that customer but behind closed doors inside the kitchen my father saw that same co-worker slam the customer’s food onto the dirty kitchen floor and wiped the floor with it by his foot and spat on it. After that, he served it to the rude customer. Ever since then that lesson stuck to me and I still couldn’t forget about it. Moral of the story: ALWAYS BE RESPECTFUL. ALWAYS.

I’ve actually dealt with people like this as a server. There were so many things I wanted to say to them but couldn’t because I don’t want to escalate the situation. I’ve managed to pacify most of them, but I’ve seen coworkers get food thrown at them, get assaulted, and have slurs yelled at them. Some people are truly disgusting human beings. 🙃

I've done 6 years in retail in Norway while I studied and out of 100s of workers and 1000s of customers I've never had anything remotely close to these. I think it's due to a huge cultural difference where america and scandinavia are at complete opposite sides on some specific things. I worked in my family restaurant. One day a putz school mate came in and demanded i come out of the kitchen to take his order. He said he wanted a pizza with EVERYTHING and extra EVERYTHING. He said can you understand that. I went back into the kitchen and dumped everything on that pizza. A whole can of cayenne pepper, hot pepper, jalapeños, crushed red pepper, and everything else i could. It was over an inch thick when I brought it out covered in cheese. He took a huge bite and almost choked to death. My stepmother just handed him a pitcher of ice water. I just smiled and walked back into the kitchen. He never acted that way again.
It's same in any type of Job where you deal with customers on someone else behalf who does the Cooking, Deciding, etc. They talk to you like your the one making all the decisions or doing all the work.

I’ve never been a server or waitress. And I am 72 years old. And I have only ever sent back a dish once in my life. And that time I wanted to try the fish at a very nice restaurant. I explained to the waiter I could not tolerate bones in fish. He assured me it was a well prepared fish and all bones had been removed. It was not, it was packed full of bones. I explained I could not eat it and he was very nice. He said because I had made a point about the bones at the time I ordered he understood. I got a steak, it was great.
I could never imagine being one of these people. One time in Burger King I told them I wanted everything on the burger except onions and I wanted mustard instead of mayo and ketchup and they brought out a burger with mustard only. I went up to the counter and told them how I wanted it and even apologized because I felt bad bothering them then they corrected it and I thanked them. It’s not hard to be polite about a correction that needs to be done to your food, workers will gladly help if you’re nice.

I was in high school and the deli I worked at on a Navy base was not only closed, we’d been closed for at least 30 minutes. A woman started threatening us with the fact that her husband was an admiral and we’d better make her a cheeseburger “or else”. My friend said, “Yes ma’am. Coming right up.” He dug in the bottom of a filthy unlined garbage can, pulled out a burger and tossed it on the grill. He spit on it and served it to her with the biggest, most sincere smile I’ve ever seen and said it was on the house. I kind of felt sorry for her until she snatched it out of his hand and said, “It’s about time!” EDIT: Removed the name of the base, even though this was over 20 years ago. Also, I have no idea why there wasn’t a liner in the trash can. 😅 Great question though.
@@heathernks8 the food waste containers aren't lined because hot food waste is tossed in throughout the day. It would melt the plastic liners and go through leaving a mess in the bin anyways. After they're cooled and counted they go in a lined bag to be thrown out. The bins are usually washed at the end of the shift... but not always. And even then they're kinda greasy and gross lol

Had a customer like this when I was working at a roadside diner. We heard yelling and then the waitress came into the kitchen visibly holding back tears.
Unfortunately for the Karen in question my coworker was an old bear of a Greek. Dude didn't even ask what had happened, just calmly asked what table then marched out. The absolute verbal asskicking she got before he threw her out was some of the most satisfying shit I've seen in this business. She kept stammering about a refund too, and he just happily told her she should have thought about that before verbally abusing our staff over an imaginary issue.

This is why my interviews always include a meal. I see how you treat people in the customer and hospitality world. Those are your true colors. Yeah I even fly you out and book a hotel. I ask the airport, hotel, car service, restaurants, security at work to my assistant. That is your true interview. I didn't give you time unless you are already qualified but they give me notes. All those people, I deal with almost everyday.

I treat the interview process as a "date". It is a life changing relationship, we both have to like each other. You decided to apply and I have to show you a good environment. Now imagine the opposite, you ask all those places how I treat them before the interview day, the extra day is for that. I am sure someone will ask why you are there then either I am good to them or not. Boom, you do not want to work here and kindly decline.

What broke me was when she said I didn’t hand her back the correct change. She couldn’t understand basic math and even after writing it out to her she still thought I was stealing money from her.
She mentioned if I can’t do basic math I shouldn’t be a server. Lady I’m a Junior mechanical engineering student, finished calculus 1,2,3 and differential equations. I can do basic math… My manager agreed my math was right, but because she was causing a scene he refunded her $2 out of his pocket.
I quit right after that. Both my manager and that lady made me hate working as a server. My mental health is more important.

It's just a movie scene but people act just as entitled irl. One time a coworker made a milkshake with too much milk and not enough ice cream so it was runny. I was the one handing it to the customer and she freaked out on me saying it wasn't safe to serve and shame on us for giving out "unsafe" milkshakes. She threatened to pour the shake on the counter and refused any drink replacements or a remake, demanding we give her a burger instead. I had to get my manager for approval and she called me rude and said I should be fired. Then she called the store later that day to demand once again that I be fired. Luckily my manager just told her if there's nothing she'd like to resolve the situation then we can't do anything for her. Some people act crazy just because they can.

I’m a server! Each one of us has a section (5 tables) but when the restaurant is full, the host start sitting customers at the bar and we don’t know if we are supposed to serve them, the host needs to tell us. One day the host forgot to tell the other server right away that he has new customers. The server didn’t want the customers, he was too busy already, so I took them, even tho they were not supposed to be mine and I was extremely busy too. When I greet them they were incredibly rude. I went back to the host and told him: well I’m not taking them either! I’m not going to serve people that are treating me like shit! So I didn’t. We work in a buffet, so they ate. When they finish they came up to my manager and told him that they were not paying because I didn’t serve them. My manager said: ok! They didn’t pay and left. My manager came up to me and said: good job, I hate people like that. Sorry for my writing, English is not my first language.

refusing service is a right that server hold, further and beyond, any manager is an owner representative, so manager hold the power of calling police to deliver a trespass notice and remove the people from property without need to notify the client, next time, call the manager and the police... easy and nice.

Last week I had a woman yell at me - and I mean YELL (hands in my face, spit going everywhere, the works) - over a mistake that she made. She ordered a cheesburger but when I brought it out she went off and said I took the order wrong (I read the order back to her before putting it in, she was lying). So she just went on and on about how much I suck at my job even though I apologized and offered to take it back and "fix" her order. Manager came out and she lied to him, too. He saw through it, but there wasn't really any way to prove her wrong so he had to take it off her bill. UNTIL the table next to her spoke up and said she was a biatch and lied through her fake teeth 😂

That’s why, if wrong plate came, full money back or unpaid should be allowed "legally". My sister's partner always sent her food back to the kitchen because it was never correct. One time she sent it back 3 times and refused to pay for it. But when I went to the same restaurant my order was correct and I was given larger size portions. I looked into the kitchen and saw the cook and winked at him

When I was younger, probably around 6 or 7, my father taught us a valuable lesson and that is to respect servers by telling us a story while he was working as one. He told me and my sisters there was once an extremely rude customer who disrespected his co-worker and downright humiliated and insulted him just because she didn’t like her food. My father’s co-worker was still very respectful in front of that customer but behind closed doors inside the kitchen my father saw that same co-worker slam the customer’s food onto the dirty kitchen floor and wiped the floor with it by his foot and spat on it. After that, he served it to the rude customer. Ever since then that lesson stuck to me and I still couldn’t forget about it. Moral of the story: ALWAYS BE RESPECTFUL. ALWAYS.
That is pathetic "reason" to be respectful. One should be respectful because we are (and we are dealing with) decent human beings, not out of fear for retaliation.

I’ve actually dealt with people like this as a server. There were so many things I wanted to say to them but couldn’t because I don’t want to escalate the situation. I’ve managed to pacify most of them, but I’ve seen coworkers get food thrown at them, get assaulted, and have slurs yelled at them. Some people are truly disgusting human beings. 🙃

Ye, where I live people tend to be more respectful but I’ve had like 2 tables in my career time that had been rude, first I was new so I was like ok, but second I told the lady “ respectfully ma’am I will call the manager so he can asign a new server, have a good day”

I've done 6 years in retail in Norway while I studied and out of 100s of workers and 1000s of customers I've never had anything remotely close to these. I think it's due to a huge cultural difference where america and scandinavia are at complete opposite sides on some specific things. I could elaborate more, but I don't wanna talk to a wall if you're not interested.
I worked in my family restaurant. One day a putz school mate came in and demanded i come out of the kitchen to take his order. He said he wanted a pizza with EVERYTHING and extra EVERYTHING. He said can you understand that. I went back into the kitchen and dumped everything on that pizza. A whole can of cayenne pepper, hot pepper, jalapeños, crushed red pepper, and everything else i could. It was over an inch thick when I brought it out covered in cheese. He took a huge bite and almost choked to death. My stepmother just handed him a pitcher of ice water. I just smiled and walked back into the kitchen. He never acted that way again.

It's same in any type of Job where you deal with customers on someone else behalf who does the Cooking, Deciding, etc. They talk to you like your the one making all the decisions or doing all the work.

I’ve never been a server or waitress. And I am 72 years old. And I have only ever sent back a dish once in my life. And that time I wanted to try the fish at a very nice restaurant. I explained to the waiter I could not tolerate bones in fish. He assured me it was a well prepared fish and all bones had been removed.
It was not, it was packed full of bones. I explained I could not eat it and he was very nice. He said because I had made a point about the bones at the time I ordered he understood.
I got a steak, it was great.
I could never imagine being one of these people. One time in Burger King I told them I wanted everything on the burger except onions and I wanted mustard instead of mayo and ketchup and they brought out a burger with mustard only. I went up to the counter and told them how I wanted it and even apologized because I felt bad bothering them then they corrected it and I thanked them. It’s not hard to be polite about a correction that needs to be done to your food, workers will gladly help if you’re nice.

He dug in the bottom of a filthy unlined garbage can, pulled out a burger and tossed it on the grill.
He spit on it and served it to her with the biggest, most sincere smile I’ve ever seen and said it was on the house.
I kind of felt sorry for her until she snatched it out of his hand and said, “It’s about time!”

@@heathernks8 the food waste containers aren't lined because hot food waste is tossed in throughout the day. It would melt the plastic liners and go through leaving a mess in the bin anyways. After they're cooled and counted they go in a lined bag to be thrown out. The bins are usually washed at the end of the shift... but not always. And even then they're kinda greasy and gross lol
