Great figure. I never thought about the goggles before. I'm gonna say that they are decorative or ceremonial. His helmet wouldn't look the same without them. Good review!
Just started watching your reviews, very cool! I love this toy line. I'm 35 this year and I grew up with gi joe in my blood. I lived close to a guy named James desimone. He as far as I know created the first guide for collecting joes. Almost every month he had trading groups to his house. Was one of my fond memories growing up with the toy line.
That's cool! When I got into serious GI Joe collecting in the early '90's, he was already starting conventions and making exclusives for them. The man was way ahead of his time!
Great review as usual! Although I preferred the Cobra and Cobra Officer, I warmed up pretty quick to the Viper, especially during Christmas of '86 when my dad got the idea to army build and bought me a ton of Vipers, CG's, and B.A.T.s that year--10 each. Wish he'd figured that out sooner when the original Cobras were still available. Anyway, the Viper became my standard Cobra infantry and the blue shirts more like Cobra's version of Rangers--specialized light infantry. They sounded better trained than Vipers, according to the file cards.
I imagined the visor could flip up into the helmet much like an astronauts then the goggles whould be used. The inside of the face shield would look similar to iron mans with computers and what not. Just a thought. Yo joe
I think that if the viper for some reason doesn't have his faceplate or if it gets damaged, he can switch to goggles that is conveniently sitting on his helmet and not taking any storage space.
just a thought on the comment around 5:30- the value has actually dropped a bit since i started army building (nm and complete only) them in 2002, they used to set me back around 20 plus shipping, and after the re use several times of the upper molds, they dropped to around 15, and now after all of the horrid 25th+ releases, i wont pay over 12 shipped for a nm, 100% example. i,ve actually in the past year acquired exactly 20 for under 200 shipped, and found that buying them in lots even totals out lower, i've gotten a few for as low as 6 shipped. some would say this sucks, as the figures value is dropping due to new product availability, but as i buy them because i love them for what they are, i'm actually stoked! and as far as the viper pit... well, they look great and are very true to the o.g., they simply are poorly constructed, and always seem to be looking at the ground. great vid as always though!
i still have nightmares about loosing my viper as a kid. ive asked the question about the goggles many a time but still can not think of why they had them other then they look cool
I got that six pack set. It was smart of hasbro to put together the most wanted figures on collectors list. And selling them these sets. Wish they would have continued using there molds. I would have liked a arctic set.
I never got the goggles either, and on the 25th version they're a separate piece that doesn't quite fit on over the helmet they were designed for. And don't get me started on those stupid bent wrists Hasbro gave the 25th version. At least they eventually got rid of that with the Hall Of Heroes and later versions.

I always liked vipers.
I usually use vipers as Pilots and drivers, like the ferret ATV, and especially for Python Patrol.

at 1:52-2:10 I think that is actually a Cobra Officer due to the Dragunov Rifle while Cobra Troopers have an Ak47.
Nope, the soldiers got the Dragunov and the Officers had the AK47s.
