The elegance of gymnastics has been lost. Today, it seems to be all about power moves, technically more advanced and difficult moves and everyone forgets about elegance, about smoothness, about flow. A gymnast today might look at this and say "That's an easy routine! I could do that." I challenge any gymnast today to show me a routine as elegant as this. It will never happen. Today, they are simply thinking about their next "big" move and neglect the elegance in transition and execution.

The Netherlands still kept some of that elegant and grace on the balance beam

@@darkdreams3090 Okay, Wow! That was indeed fantastic and unique and I give her so much credit. However, while that was an eye opening and overall incredible routine, one that I appreciate so much considering that this era has been all about the big power moves (e.g. Simone Biles routine), the only thing that I would still criticize, and it's not unique to her, but to all gymnasts, is that while her moves are great; the step twist combinations that make her unique, the precision and execution of her pirouettes, it's the hand, arm, leg, and feet movements in transition, in-between the difficult power moves that just seem incredibly rushed and robotic. It's as if all the gymnasts of today are in some kind of hurry. I don't see anyone taking their time and making those small and subtle moves a true part of the routine. I understand that those stylistic hand and finger movements are probably unimportant in terms of points and in fact are completely unnecessary, but even so, I would absolutely love to see gymnasts take their time with and pay attention to each and every part of their routine, including those small little details that the gymnasts of old used to care about, focus on, take their time with, and truly make an artistic part of their routine, perhaps even unknowingly adding to their overall score in terms of artistic points.

The floor back then also had no springs, yet gymnasts back then still managed to get some impressive height in their jumps.

I so enjoy watching her. No slight to Miss. Biles, but Nadia had a grace and flexibility that I don’t see any longer. I suspect being Russian Miss. Korbut also trained in ballet which might be the reason she has more grace and elegance than most do today.

Love the gracefullness back then, it's a shame more gymnasts today don't observe that from Nadia, Olga, the girls in recent years do their routines hyper speed, no elegance, it's annoying.

The gymnasts today have so many requirements that they don't have time to slow down and show off that much grace.

    • @karajanechapman8517
      @karajanechapman8517 Рік тому

That kind of grace isn't rewarded by the points scheme anymore. And perhaps it shouldn't be - as beautiful as OG gymnastics was, the sport isn't dance - it's gymnastics. That said. in the early 90s Henrietta Onodi came pretty close to marrying dance with acrobatics, so it can be done. It just isn't.

Don't remember the exact score for this, but it was good enough to clinch the silver medal. Says something about her beam work in general that it took a Nadia to dethrone her as gold medalist, even having had some ankle injuries between Munich and Montreal.

They should remove the word "artistic" from today's gymnastics. As incredible (and spring-assisted), and yes, impressive as today's acrobatics are, there is no artistry at all. It's just hyper, and ugly. Maybe it should be, I don't know. Went should women be forced to be graceful, if men aren't? I don't love gymnastics anymore. What captured my heart is gone.

Oh what lovely hands & a nice rhythm too! I've noticed that gymnasts in those days seemed to try to make an arc in the air when doing their 'split 'leaps on beam, rather than showing a complete 180 degree split in the legs.

I agree how graceful Korbut was. It was not just her beautiful manner alone also but also a result of her environment -the arts (composition, ballet etc) were truly vibrant and highly developed in USSR but this grace was part of the training specifically to USSR gymnastics also! See her preparations on film. I like Korbut’s words at 28 minutes “what a beautiful gymnast you suddenly are!... you must do it beautifully.. you need to feel love and then your performance will be better” - in our times the emphasis on grace and beauty is lost in gymnastics. ua-cam.com/video/ovN5i0sHMq4/v-deo.html

Today's gymnasts are... Boring muscle mutants. Simone Biles asked what is gymymanstic, art or acrobatic... Answered acrobatic...
    Sad.

Gymnastics is a sport, after all. Some of the athletic grace was lost, but the degree of difficulty is so much greater now, & Simone Biles is simply the best!

Poor Olga... I believe that she was suffering from an ankle injury, so she left out nearly all of the difficulty from her routine in the finals. Check out the video from the preliminary round to see something better. Only the ridiculous biased judging of the day allowed this scandalously easy routine win the Silver.

I was just 11 at the time, but I still remember looking forward to seeing Olga in the 1976 Olympics. It made me so sad when her nerves got the best of her, and she messed up. I was pulling for her, but everything was about Nadia. I will always feel Olga should have gotten the first perfect ten on the bars in the 72 Olympics. And really probably the all around gold as well. ( even though I thought Ludmilla was a beautiful gymnast as well) For some reason, I think the judges were always kind of biased against Olga.

    • @cathydouglas1576

UNBELIEVABLE amount of disrespect the number of flashes going off during this routine. How many times must the audience be reminded that a blinding light catching your eye in the middle of a gymnastics routine puts you in considerable physical or even mortal danger?
