- Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
Let's bring it back to basics today for all of those budding opal cutters out there.
Much like a good fish taco is only as good as it's ingredients, a beautiful opal is only as good as it's foundations.
Every step needs to be carried out with care and to do that, you've got to understand the basics.
Today, I'll show you how by teaching my son Saxon the three pillars of great opal cutting.

Haha, my son was exactly the same the first time I sat him down at my jewellers bench, as we know they grow out of doodling and fiddling around stage. Good on you Dad for giving your boy the same opportunity to have a go and see if it grows 👍👍 Love you channel
He looks just like you! (except younger, more hair, and His Mothers good looks) besides that you’re twins!! Good job Dad
😆
Mark McArthy And a leftie as well!
Maggie Pearson - Southpaws rock! Someday we'll take over the world, because we're the only people in our right minds. Ha ha!
Twin ? What is this?
I guess I'm kinda randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to watch newly released series online?
Probably one of my favorite channels. Never a dull moment.
Thank you Kayla
never dull with all that shining opal :O
Very kind of the young man to let us share his lessons. Thank you.
My wife and I are looking at doing gems as a hobby specifically opals. I am so happy I found your UA-cam channel.
ive got a bag of various sizes i source here in new jersey , plentiful i would call it , i cannot seem to get to those shiny glittering bits try as i might . was wondering how you guys have faired .
Thanks Sax for being in the video. It's really hard to do something when you are aware that you are being watched. You did well. If your old man gives you a hard time, you could always push him back down the mine shaft!!!!!! Lol. Look out Justin!
Hahah he did after the video and shut the lid
Well guys... I had been watching something really deep and dark for educational purposes and was in tears... grabbed a coffee and flicked on my fav channel and spluttered coffee all over my phone watching you guys. Made my day. Thank you Saxon for helping us learn with you 😊
I am so glad I can help you brighten your day :-)

The natural awkwardness in this video is adorable
Laughter is contagious!
Great video as always. It's good to see father and son working together on a project like this.

You always put a smile in my face. Love opals, love your channel. Keep up the good work. Thanks from Austria!
ON. Bloody autocorrect....
SO glad you corrected that haha. I am glad you watch
So glad to see you passing your family’s legacy on to the next generation as your Dad passed his on to you.
That is awesome.
Having said that, all hijinks aside, I really do appreciate your also passing the knowledge on to us as well. I have said it many times how much I want to give this a go, and after watching this video I can see it will be a long learning curve. But rest assured that I do recognize that as fact and am prepared to invest the time, the money, and the energy and concentration into learning this skill set.
I know it will take more than I have to give at the moment, but I have already started my search for some second hand lapidary equipment, and when I finally attain what I think I will need to get started I just might reach out.
Wow he did a pretty good job, nice job kid. Keep up the good work.
Waiting for my first beginners batch from you. So excited.. thanks for your amazing videos❤️ much love
Love your videos Justin ✨
This video was both informative and ADORABLE !
Not a terrible effort young dude, keep em coming. Great content Dad!!!

Justin, I really enjoyed watching you and your son bonding over opal. He is so handsome 😍 he's going to get quite a following on here....when he's done playing with 🔥! Hope you all are safe, happy and healthy!
Thank you Cathi. I hope you guys are a safe too
Hey Justin, your son is my grandsons twin. I showed this to my daughter, she was shocked. I can’t believe it!
I won't see a better visual than the rope ascent this week. Loved it. I hope that Saxon masters 'the wheels', because the world needs as many artisan craftsmen as it can muster. Great watch, thanks........
Thank you for the kind words and yes it would be good for hime to carry the torch
It’s Dad that’s gone when the camera rolls these days, innit? Love ya to bits, thanks for the silly.
Your boy is too funny he even squeaked haha that was a fun show. Keep em coming 😀
Job well done young man!!
The intro was very funny great channel too many thanks from England.
Your a good teacher very patient
My dad taught me the art of shoe cobbler. And how grind and polish leather. He wasn't as gentle as you. LOL. But I love your videos. I'm learning how to cut opal from you. You rock!
Yes great show
Hello great video good tips always needed thanks 💯🙏
That kid is gonna be a heartbreaker. What a beautiful smile ♥️
Great video. I'd love to see more basics videos from you all.
Good to know thank you
Your son is so handsome, we want to see more like this in your videos 😂🥰😍
I live in New Zealand and I wanna buy rough opals, I never had an opal yet in my crystal collection! Wish I can get discount code for my first purchase 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
i agree
Ficou legal, parabéns pra o rapaz.
Very fun video! It is eye opening to compare when someone how has done if for years and someone who is newer at it. Every time I watch you put a stone on a dop stick I tell myself I'd screw it up every time even though you make it look easy. I can say with confidence I's screw it up much worse than your son did after seeing how he did.
Haha yeah it is an art in itself doppping
Passing down greatness.
And this is why our kids think we're dorks😂good to see you passing it on Justin, thanks for the chuckle...cheers
Dork me up lol
@@blackopaldirect they may think we're dorks but we have the power to embrace them at the most opportune time...lol
great vid :) loved the giggles lol
Another great intro!
Glad you like it!
You guys are hilarious. You remind me of myself and my son.
Only found your channel a few days ago. I didn't think I had any interest in gemstones or opal, but have been binge watching anyway. Very entertaining, this video was very funny, thankyou!
Glad you found me. :-) I hope you subscribed and be careful you are about to get opal fever haha
@@blackopaldirect Thanks, I promise I subscribed! No promises about avoiding opal fever though :-)
Great video.
Another good video Justin. Its good for you to have your son learn how to shape and polish opals. Not sure his heart is in it? Wish Id of had a dad like you
Thank you so much, learned a lot!
You are a, head case! I love your videos. Wish I could come to Australia to meet you.
Haha found this in my email today funny ,I got one of those as well ( teenager ) he’s keen to give it a go 😃
Your son is like “My Dad’s such a dork!” But it’s so cute. And keep being dorky Justin! I love it! And your channel!
That’s exactly what he was thinking haha thank you
Nice going Justin, the 2 of you together is a crack up. Keep well & Keep Rockin,
PS, love the start, note sure if your son wanted to be part of of it or just loosing it😆
that intro was awesome
Great vid thanks for the tips 😁
love it, it looks so easy when you do it!!i was sooo envy of Sax watching this video, i wish i could try it myself... i think i must purchase some beginner parcel and sand papers ( and cerium oxide)
You gotta give it a go 😊🙏
@@blackopaldirect gotta need 10 extra fingers to put on opal rings 🙈🤣
Great video!!! I get my 5 year old daughter to practice too..good looking young man...teenage stage...fun!! Haha
Chip of the same block , Justin great to see 🌍

Justin! You didn't age!
Watching this was soooo heart-warming! "This is gonna be fuuunny!" LOLZ!!
I wonder if Saxon could tell us how much interested he is in making a career out of opal cutting...
Haha thank you
Love it!
Your son is just like me. When less intertain in something I fiddle with stupid stuff in my hand. Like the tweezer and fire and lighter in the end 🤣🙈
I am a fiddler too lol
Lovely to see a father's hands over the son's.
Hahaha love the intro - too funny. 😂
great job
That was amazing to see. Are you going to get Saxon cutting more opal? I can't believe that such a colourful stone came out of one of your beginner parcels. I really need to crack on with the other crafting jobs so I can get my mitts a beginners parcel.
Love your channel! Very educational and interesting! Thanks.
One note just FYI, I've noticed that the audio on your channel is often a bit lower than other channels.
good to know thank you
Wow i have that same yellow box screwdriver set you have on your table, here in beloit wisconsin
He's learning from the best! But he's still a kid...lol ..all in all,for someone who doesn't have alot of experience,he did a great job!
That's for another cool video 👍🏻
What grit are your wheels?
Also, you once shared that you use a wooden tip to work on deepet scratches. What polish compound do you use?
That intro 🤣🤣 I instantly hit like haha
Love it thanks guys. What type of light do you use please?thanks
LED
Hi Justine I am starting to cut opals, and i would like to ask who are the best outlets for buying rough parcel of black opals. I am a member of a Gem club but your informative video's are great. Arthur Slater
One suggestion for future vids... Id love you to talk about how the market works in terms of buying rough opal.
Do you browse and buy individual rough specimens, or you just pay the mining company for their next kilo of rocks etc?
It seems like so much risk buying rough opal with many failures, I wonder if rough opal is fairly cheap or priced assuming it will produce a good gem?
Finally would also love to see any opals you cut, where the jeweller has sent back photos of the final jewellery product they created with it
Nice lesson! Can you say more about the two machines used? or is there a video where you talk more about them? Thanks!
Lol love it!
Not a bad polish....good on you!
Hi and thanks I am starting and wanna know what grinding wheel grit are you starting the shaping with?
One of the best UA-cam videos I have seen after a long long time.
Your son looks just like you.
That is actually a nice looking stone, does it have any value?
No not really
Thank you.
Andy
What grit wheel do you use
(I love your channel by the way)
Keep it up
Hey boys, you are so lucky ! Thanks you dudes for your work. My dream is to becoming opal cutter/reseller. But in France, we dont have this opportunity.
I have customers in France making money out of opal
Have look you'r website is very beautiful, all your stones are beautiful. For my wife anniversary have find where buy nice pendant. Is not so expensive ! Thanks you again ! Respect
The final polish takes a lot longer than I thought, but is so worth it!
I like how the top is nearly flat and real round at the edges. Almost like a botton, not bad at all.
ok i have a question for you if it is alright .
say you have a 1 inch round raw blue opal , how much of it would i have to polish down regardless of shape before i begin to see those lovely glittering inclusions ?
or is more a matter of just polishing the stone itself regardless of size or shape?
i live in the states and i find these everywhere but am 100% the novice with a toolshed . if it helps , retired carpenter by trade and just like rock hunting as i walk .
Love it❤😂
I must have been lucky because on my very first cut and polish I made an exquisite black opal 🎉😂
Haha you did and you got to put extra carats on it as you cut 👏👏👏👏👏 I never did that before 🤔
Wow, how did you get calling your son after an '80's rock band past your wife? I wanted my lad to be called Scorpions and my Mrs really put her foot down.
Reminds me of the lad who came up with the name Lanesra for his daughter and his wife loved it, thought it was so unique. Yeah it's just Arsenal backwards.
Oimmmm... Que fofos, que lindos!!
