LAMU: THE AFRICA YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT (KENYA)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Lamu Island, Kenya. Lamu is located just off the shore of Kenya in the Indian Ocean, and was a major center of global trade for hundreds of years. Today, the island is home to a Muslim-majority Swahili community as well as the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Its culture, people, and architecture reflect its diverse past and influences.
In this video, we travel to Lamu Island, explore the unique architecture in Old Town Lamu, take a tour in a dhow sailboat, and have a meal at an upscale restaurant in Shela.

I live in Lamu and you showcased it marvelously! Thank you for this very well-thought-through video :)... the original inhabitants were of course African though :)
I love this part of Kenya preserving culture
thank you for showcasing our beautiful country in such an elegant way
Welcome to Kenya Dottie and Lenza. I am glad that you both enjoyed the old and the new Lamu town. Besides, make sure you have visited Maasai Mara national reserve. It is an amazing site that sustains Savannah wilderness in Kenya. Karibu Kenya.
Thank you! We did go to Maasai Mara! You can see our adventure there in the video before this :) It was definitely a whirlwind.

From tunisia and i like your vlogs
Good job
Cheers to you, well done!!!
Historically in accurate when you say oldest. Mogadishu, Merca, Barawe, etc are all Swahili settlements older than Lamu. Still, you likely meant most preserved. The thanks go to the Kenyan govt. And locals for preserving their culture and architecture. So beautiful.
Hi Dottie. Love your channel and I'm a subscriber and have learned a lot from your travel vlogs. The original inhabitants of Lamu were not Arab traders as you indicate in your video, there were Africans living and inhabiting the surrounding area. It is like when Western explorers landed in Africa and they said they were the first to set eyes on Mt. Kenya, Lake Victoria, Lake Turukana, The Nile and so on as if there were no local inhabitants there. It is a very sad form of "White washing" and it is disrespectful to the indigenous communities. For instance Lake Victoria on the Kenyan side was known as Nam Lolwe and the British colonialists said they were the first to see it and renamed it. Same thing happens all over Africa. Lake Turukana was renamed after Kenya got its independence to restore the locals heritage. It's a very emotive subject and I could go on and on but I'll stop there, the reason the Arabs claim it because to this day there are many absentee landlords and many indigenous Africans are squatters on their ancestral land. The whole of the East African coast was conquered by Arabs and they set up their capital in Zanzibar but after Kenya got its independence the land is under the sovereignty of the state but there still remains foreign landlords who would one day want to rule the coast and swing, peddle and spread rumours that they were the original inhabitants. The original inhabitants of Lamu were Africans!

Lamu is the best place in Kenya if you want to have 16th - 19th century vibe mixed with modern life.
Lamu Island is part of Garissa
Lamu is beautiful
Hi where is the video floating Village in 🇹🇭
You are my crush 🤩🥰 I Love Your Videos So Much From Bottom Of My Heart 💕 Love From India 🇮🇳
Lamu is not an Arab Island, it's a Swahili island, the architecture, roofing, culture, and language are distinctively Swahili not Arabic, the earliest visitors in Lamu weren't even Arabs, they were Persians and Indian traders from Uttar Pradesh. Such ignorance when trying to narrate African history isn't a thing of the present.

Voice overs throughout the video feel very isolated from your personal perceptions and also make it hard to keep someone’s attention, no reason you can’t narrate the VOs yourself. A lot of the time it sounds like you’re reading from Wikipedia too. Try showing a culture through interacting with the locals more and really asking them questions, try to describe the food you eat better than just it’s nice or it’s tasty so we feel like we’re also tasting it. And when you have random people like Elliot in your video, introduce them, or the viewer is like what, Who is this!
Sorry, but it is not respectful to walk through the streets of Lamu showing your knees. At the beach area it is possible but the old town is not appropriate.
Who cares? She’s spending money, that’s all they care about! I was in Zanzibar Tanzania and they had the same rules but it doesn’t matter as long as you are spending money, so who cares!
Interesting... But please don't ride donkeys. Just like horses, they get pain and their backs become deformed over time. These are primitive and cruel customs that need to be abandoned... And in poor countries the least we tourists can do is not participate :( (The same with camels, elephants...etc.)
WE come by @IBRA TRAVELER : WE JUST WANNA SUPPORT YOU
