Absolutely, I saw him at the sandown pier theatre on the Isle of Wight in the late 70s I think , could have been a tad later but yes the first few minutes of the routine you could hear him behind the scenes being lost and not being able to find his way to the stage.

On 15 April 1984, Cooper died at the age of 63 after suffering a heart attack on live television. Great comedian it's so sad and sadly missed we used to watch him all the time

A friend of my dad's saw him live and Tommy spent the first 15 minutes pretending he was locked in the dressing room and, when he got out, couldn't find the stage. By the time he actually appeared in front of the audience, it was 15 minutes later and everyone was crying with laughter.

My Mam went to see him live with some friends once. She actually wasn't really a fan but went along for a girls night out. She said it was the funniest show she had ever seem. He did a thing where he pretended to be stuck in the dressing room with his mike on. He didn't get on stage for 20 mins or so and by the time he got on stage everyone was on the floor unable to breathe. He had barely said a few sentences in all that time and none of them were one liners just him stuck in his dressing room. :)

He would sign autographs with his own pen, then give the pen and book back. The pen had printed on it the words "This pen was stolen from Tommy Cooper. " I had one that he gave to me but lost it years ago. He was a genuinely nice man.

You said it, we just don't get good clean comedy anymore. Tommy had some great 'one liners' like, 'My teeth itch!' & 'I'm good to my wife, I never go home'. Always good to watch.

I had the immense pleasure of growing up watching Tommy on a Saturday night, doing this kinda stuff, unfortunately some of your American buddies didn't get the joke,! They said that he was a magician who's tricks failed 😳 I so glad you have seen the brilliance of the man. Dare I say a British sence of humour,👍 Tommy put a smile on our faces and kept it their for as long as he wanted, he passed away with his boots on, as they say, he collapsed and died in the middle of one of his shows, the audience though it was part of his act and laughed heartily, somehow I think Tommy wouldn't have wanted it any other way! 😁

He was in a market in the Middle East once and saw a stall selling Fezzes (I forget where so, depending on where he was, it might have been selling Tarbooshes which are very similar). He stopped to look and the proprietor waved his hands as if performing a magic trick and said, "Just like that!" in the time honoured fashion of anyone and everyone who does a Tommy Cooper impression no matter how good or bad. This surprised Cooper who hadn't expected to be recognized but it emerged that the stall owner didn't know him from Adam- it was just that every British tourist who saw his wares would put on a fez then do that.

Tommy Cooper's act and appeal was a multi-level multi-component thing. IMO no single clip or trick can really do him justice - you have to watch a half hour or so to see these elements accumulate to really get his appeal I think.
He told dad jokes really well, his act as an incompetent magician was fantastic (though in fact he was a very accomplished one) and his infectious laugh and affable manner was a factor as was his physical appearence. At well over 6 foot tall and - not slightly built - he was very graceful on his feet which added to the comedy. So, his comedy was cumulative and very few "moments" can do it justice.
