I went to see him in a nightclub, the lights went down ready for his entrance, and nothing happened. After a minute in darkness there were some nervous giggles, another minute his voice came over the loudspeakers, 'Can someone turn on the lights, I can't find the door'. He kept up this routine for another 15 minutes. He had that audience in stitches for all that time without him even being on stage and the place in darkness. The man was a comedy genius.
You are so lucky to have seen him live. I absolutely adore him. I was only a kid the night he died and had only been allowed to stay up to watch him. I was so sad the next morning. Genius of his craft. ✌️❤️🇮🇪
🤗 ahhh, Tommy Cooper 😄 My dad’s fave comedian(back in the day) and us little kids loved him too…nothing too “grown up” or complicated and lots of chuckles 👍✨ Thanks for the little trip down memory lane 🥰
Hi there. I remember watching this on TV. The next day, at school, everyone, including the teachers were doing Tommy's voice saying "Spoon jar-jar spoon." 😂😂 RIP Tommy ❤
God bless Tommy Cooper one of a kind! He died in harness! Saw him in a TV routine were the screen was black most of the time. Started with him in a room when the lights went out, the rest is him talking to himself. A door opened he went out in the hall and meet a woman he attempted to help out. When the light went on we were back in the room. The door opened to the wardrobe and he was inside talking to fur coat! Was laughing like crazy all the time.
He was fantastic. His jokes were all very simple, but he had a gift for making the simple stuff extremely funny. He was also quite a talented magician, but more often than not his tricks would always go wrong (intentionally of course) for comedic effect. Unfortunately there’s very little footage of him on UA-cam.
This was his whole comfort zone, the one thing that made him feel the happiest, in real life he had a marriage problem, drinking problem, and one incident was at a bar and asked the barman for a drink, people just found him funny all the time and even when he wasn't being funny, people would laugh or like the barman said "Very funny mister Cooper" he responded by saying "What you laughing about." annoyed. during the war when the troops would discuss something of importance or a serious topic. He'd do a trick or make a joke, how socially awkward he felt and not knowing and being able to contribute seriously to the conversation. not knowing how to engage with others. you had some comedians then like Kenneth Williams and was a manic-depressant he was alright with others for the most part, but had huge battles going on with his homosexuality, as Margaret Margoyle once said "I feel sad for him that his life wasn't as happy for him as he made it for all of us, he had the gift of making others laugh, but he didn't have the gift to make himself laugh."
As you can see he was an accomplished Magician as well as comedian and it actually takes a good Magician to make the magic "fail". He sadly died of a heart attack whilst performing live on TV and with a live audience While on stage at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Westminster, London, he slumped down and subsequently collapsed. The audience erupted in laughter assuming it was all part of the joke. However, the show’s director recognised something was very wrong, and switched to an unplanned break. He was much loved by the British public and was one of many brilliant comedy and magic shows that we will never see the likes of again.
That’s what I was trying to explain to this other magician who reacted to this, it’s like les Dawson he couldn’t make mistakes while playing piano sound funny without being able to actually play properly I’m a guitarist mistakes don’t sound funny… unless you engineer the “wrong” notes for comedic effect
There's a statue of him in his birthplace Caerphilly in Wales (also known for its cheese and castle, 2nd biggest in UK after Windsor), which was unveiled by the actor Sir Anthony Hopkins, also from Wales.
I remember tysheen watching the Tommy cooper performance as boy when he collapsed and died on stage rip legend he was queens favourite there is show were she was laughing at his stuff Best thing he was member magic circle so all tricks he did stage he could do them easy but he found out if he messed up bit audience loved it
Great comedian brilliant I was born in 1976 he could make people laugh by walking on his death in 1984 on stage of a heart attack which was televised at her majesty's theatre was the saddest moment I remember it well tommy cooper was Welsh born in 1921 Caerphilly
A different time no swearing inocent jokes was very popular. I was watching his live tv show and he collapsed and died during the act. There is a video of his actual death on stage but i saw it once after the live event and it was more shocking than the actual live event because people thought his collapse was part of the act for a short while. He act was quite unique and very funny.
Tommy did actually play the Ed Sullivan show back in the day, but the audience didn't get what he was about. He was actually an accomplished conjuror who messed it up for laughs. They also put him first on the bill on that occasion, which was a vote of confidence in getting viewers, but he considered that a step down. After all, you want to be top of the bill. And he went on to be just that.
He's from my country Wales,🏴 he's from the part of Wales called Caerphilly, his full name is Thomas Frederick Cooper. He's 6ft 3 tall & born in march 1921 & had 2 kids & was a member of the magic circle. I love him he was hilarious 😂😂👌
He was around in the seventies early eighties died on stage during a live TV performance. People thought it was part of the act.! Always on purpose he would do the magic tricks badly just for fun. A larger than life character who is sadly missed.
Please do more.he is loved by older generations in the UK. He was a member of the magic circle as was my step dad who met him twice and Tommy encouraged him to keep doing the magic.which he did. You have to be good to make the tricks go wrong. He had several shows in which as well as the magic he would do comedy sketches. Please do bottle glass and egg in a bag.
He was a very good magician, but he found that when he stuffed up one night, he got far more attention than during his normal act. So he continued with the "stuff it up" routine. I remember him doing the "join the rings" trick, and trying it 3 or 4 times. Kept saying "Some people can't do this you know..." Then he seemingly gives up and throws them down in disgust............... picks them up and they are then all joined. His timing was very good.
He was known as the comedian's comedian. All the other UK comedians watched him. Not to steal his stuff. But to wonder how he got away with the corniest material. All he had to do was walk on, and people laughed. He just "had it."
@@TysheenOrane Exactly the right response, Tysheen. He lived to make people laugh, and he died on stage, surrounded by their laughter. They thought that his collapse onstage was just part of his (fiegned) clumsiness that he usually incorporated into his act.
@@TysheenOrane it was during a live tv show as well. just as jay said, when he collapsed on stage, everybody kept laughing cos they thought it was part of the act. after a few moments, somebody pulled the curtain over him so they could get him off the stage. very strange moment.
When ever he went in to restaurants or clubs he'd always put a little something in one of the waiters or bouncers pockets saying "Here have a drink on me" .. when they checked to see how much they got they always found a single tea bag .. genius level comedy.
Some of that stuff you won't get, because it's especially about British things. With regards the sound quality, don't worry - it's very very old. In that era, to make recordings, it had to be on spools of tape - long, long before digital technology.

I saw him live years ago too. I was in stitches from start to finish.
this man was a genius !! comedian/magician, he had the gift of making you laugh by just standing there haha
I'm glad he made my day. What a sweet guy.
Les Dawson could also make you laugh by doing nothing !!!!
Great reaction to a very very funny man. "Just like that. Not like that, like that!" Brilliant RIP.

There's a clip on U Tube, of Tommy Coper being interviewed by Michael Parkinson. What a marvellous act.
I don't think any Englishman in the 1960s and 70s was as much loved by every English person as Tommy Cooper.
Especially as he was from Wales not England lol

He was truly amazing and a funny man. - Sadly he died on stage - but you'd think it's great to die while doing what you love.
True but sad
He was actually a good magician i think was member of magic circle. He played for laughs though by looking like tricks went wrong.
Yes the Magic Circle tried to ban him because he exposed the tricks by his act of them going wrong.

Tommy wanted to be a magician but his tricks frequently failed so he made a show of failed tricks and jokes some spoken and some visual.
