    The Porsche 997 Turbo gives you genuine supercar levels of performance in a package that's also suitable for daily driving, so no wonder they're perennially popular. There were two generations of 997 Turbo, split between the Gen1 models (2006-09) and Gen2 (2009-10). So what on earth was a 997 Gen 1.5?! In this video, Lee gets a test drive in one, to find out exactly why it's considered a sweet spot in the 997 turbo story.
    Thanks to Henry at Lakeside Classics for allowing me to drive this nice example from his current stock! More details on the car can be found here: 9werks.co.uk/classifieds/7bf1...

    Best all round sports car ever made and the 997 is the best 911 Turbo version ever best of both worlds imo. Cheers

      @@Angel-fz8dr very very good. I struggle to remember anything that needed fixed in 13 years. I’m sure there was something, but it wasn’t significant and it was very infrequent at best. Oh I just had a hood strut go out that is pending a fix (pretty minor part).

    Great video thank you for sharing and highlighting this 911 turbo. The manual gen1.5 997 turbo is so rare that even the most dedicated Porsche fans and some dealers don’t really realise it’s rarity. I actually think from a price point it’s undervalued.

      That’s because it’s not a real ‘thing’. Owners just started labelling their 997.1 ‘gen 1.5’ because it has a newer PCCM system and matching centre console from the gen 2…that’s it. Hardly a reason to pay more than any other 997.1 Turbo, especially consider PCCM plus is now available.

    Same Gen 1.5 exists for the GT2 in model year 2010. Approx. 240 were built with PCM3, and before the 500 RS were built in MJ 2011.

    I test drove all the dot 997’s before buying a .2 (including one from Lakeside) the PDK box is fantastic, the DFI engine also has many advantages over the Mezger, including power, fuel economy and less C02. The only thing the 997 turbos lack is the exhaust note. An American company called Soul Performance do an upgrade (not cheap) but this finishes the total package for me. These cars are the next 993 Turbos, prices already starting to creep up as they hit the ‘classic’ market. Great video btw.

    sure its more historically significant and all that, but the main reason people want the gen 1s is probably because you can fairly reliably smash over 1200hp with them :D

    Back in October 2008 in response to Nissans claim of a 7m29s ring lap for it's then new R35 GTR, Porsche took a Gen 1.5 997 Turbo and a GT2 to the ring and lopped a huge 10 seconds off the previous Gen 1 997 turbo's lap time. It completed the lap in 7m38s only 4 seconds slower than the GT2, which managed a 7m34s. Suggesting that the Gen 1.5 had mechanical tweaks beyond the usual PCM 3.0 upgrade. It would be really interesting if you could do some more digging regarding this increase in performance and drop in lap time with your contacts at Porsche Lee. :)

      Different driver, different temperature, slightly different track conditions, PCCB vs Steel brakes, possible unknown upgrade, tyres old or new/cold or warm, track temperature, better maintained example, tip vs man transmission. It could be down to a whole host of potential reasons.

    Nice review. Had a .2 with pdk which was great car with addictive shove but lacked some character in the noise dept. Swapped it for a 991.1 C4S and got back to a cab which I missed having. I do now enjoying being able to ring this one out a little more without losing g my licence. In a perfect (rich) world I'd have kept it and ran 2.

    Cool video - they are extraordinary cars and I've enjoyed my '09 manual for over 10 years now. With a few bolt-on mods they can be made to sound and perform even better and be more exciting and dynamic to drive. Acceleration is astounding if not violent particularly in a modded car (mine has around 550awhp but some have >1000). They're built like tanks but service costs are high as you might expect. The main mechanical weakness is the coolant pipe leak issue but fixing that is typically a "one and done" permanent procedure. I agree with @niall3973 the "gen 1.5" thing is a made-up bogus reference though - the newer PCM3 looks less antiquated but technologically, it is antiquated....

    Rosso Corsa , in very good condition , I love but I have also wanted a 997 series 1 or 2 GT3 manual ,
    I have an. Opportunity to do a straight swap and
    $ 30k ( US$20k) on top as a kicker ,
    Would you do it , I’m so concerned the 355 will jump so high in value in the next few years, your thoughts ?

    It's a great car, but sorry I can't stand this whole "gen 1.5" term. This is literally a gen 1 car, using the exact same engine and design. Having a slightly less out of date PCM doesn't qualify the car as a unique special generation. Besides, many owners are updating their infotainment systems to the new Porsche Classic one. So this minor enhancement is basically meaningless.
    Gen 1.5 is a made up term. To the best of my knowledge it's not a term Porsche created. You might as well name one a gen 1.1 or gen 1.2 as some people spec'd bucket seats over comfort seats or PCCB's over steels. Makes more difference than a PCM difference!

    • @291rich
      @291rich 3 місяці тому

      The PCM is not the only difference, however it is the one that people notice and I do agree that this is less relevant now than it was at the time.
      There are though several other changes over the gen 1 that I am aware of, including the entire centre console, the steering wheel, the climate control, plus the keys that Lee mentioned. Also in the cab the roof and frame is from the gen 2 (and probably the hydraulics and control system too). I'm sure that there are other internals that were changed over as they started to switch production fully over to the gen 2. They actually printed a specific brochure for the 1.5 Turbo.

    • @adamsyoutube
      @adamsyoutube 6 хвилин тому

      Completely agree Nial, the 1.5 was desirable when it came out as it updated the crap PCM 2.1 to slightly less crap 3.1. The main benefit IMO was a proper Bluetooth system rather than the daft SIM card solution. BT being available on cheap Fords and Nissans for years before 😂.
      As others have said the PCM tech is ancient now so just buy a Porsche classic PCM upgrade.
      As for wanting a 1.5 because of the different key? Er no
      (ex 997.1 turbo manual owner)
