TIPS REPOTTING BONSAI FOR BEGINNERS

Repotting a bonsai is an essential part of its care to maintain its health and growth. Here are some beginner-friendly tips:
1. Choose the Right Time
Best done during the tree’s dormant season, usually in early spring before new growth begins. For tropical species, you can repot during their active growth season.
2. Gather Tools and Materials
Tools: Pruning shears, chopstick, root rake, and a small brush.
Materials: Fresh bonsai soil mix, a new or cleaned pot, drainage mesh, and wire for anchoring.
3. Prepare the New Pot
Clean the pot and cover drainage holes with mesh to prevent soil from escaping. Add a layer of soil for the base.
4. Remove the Bonsai Carefully
Gently remove the bonsai from its current pot by loosening the soil around the edges. Avoid pulling hard on the trunk.
5. Trim the Roots
Use sharp scissors or shears to remove about 1/3 of the roots, especially thick, long, or rotting ones. This encourages the growth of fine feeder roots.
6. Examine the Root Ball
Loosen compacted soil with a root rake or chopstick to ensure proper aeration. Remove old soil, but be gentle to avoid damaging healthy roots.
7. Position the Tree
Place the tree in the new pot and anchor it with wire to keep it stable. Make sure it’s centered or positioned based on your design preference.
8. Add Fresh Soil
Cover the roots with fresh bonsai soil mix, ensuring no air pockets. Use a chopstick to work the soil in and around the roots.
9. Water Thoroughly
Water the tree until it drains from the bottom of the pot. This helps settle the soil and remove air pockets.
10. Post-Repotting Care
Keep the bonsai in a shaded, protected area for a few weeks to recover. Avoid fertilizing for at least 3-4 weeks, as the roots need time to heal.
