Layered Leaves: Free-Form Curves

- Gentle free-form cut curves are combined with easy topstiching to create these fun little leaves. Use them by themselves in a quilt or combine them with your choice of blocks, for example: my Rose Twirl blocks!
For detailed instructions and patterns for projects using these leaves, please refer to my book "Wiggles & Waves: Free-Form Curves."
Freehand, not much measuring - now you are talking my language! Such a great idea!
Oh.how beautiful the little leaf and rose quilt is, wow!! Thank you for.sharing+
what a nice and kind lady you are, karen! and your explanations are so easy to understand - even for me!!! 🙂
The quilt on the wall with small leaves is very beautiful, I loved the composition of sweet colors.
When I started my quilting journey two years ago, yours was one of the first videos I saw on landscaping. I made two beautiful large blocks, one was with a family tree the other with a river and fairy village. I also used the fold over seams and top stitched it layer by layer. Both blocks were totally hand stitched, as was the entire queen sized story quilt. Thank you so very much. I am going to make three more quilts the same way. Hopefully I will not take more than 4 months for each quilt. 🤣
I'd love to see a photo of your quilt. It would be so inspirational!
@@katemorgan4346hi Kate. Sorry I’ve just seen your comment. If you give me your IG I’ll send you photos.
I started sewing earlier this year and found the rose twirl video early last week. Immediately purchased the book, Wiggles and Waves, and it arrived on Saturday. Made my first practice rose yesterday. The instructions in the video and in the book are easy to follow and understand; even for a beginner like me. Saw this video and had to watch and give a thumbs up and subscribe. Look forward to practicing my first set of leaves soon. Thank you Karen for showing me new and interesting sewing techniques. Great skills and great videos.
Glad you found me and thank you for your kind words! Have fun experimenting and playing with fabric!
What a treat...thanks so very much!!! I LOVE your color palette...ALWAYS. Your work is fabulous.
I just think they are so beautiful thank you so much for sharing this wonderful idea it kind of reminds me of cathedral windows ❣️🪡🧵✂️
It's very generous for you to demonstrate your techniques on YT. I am a newby, 2 quilts in, mostly using square blocks, and straight line designed blocks, my favourite so far is the mosaic block. I feel the curved blocks may be somewhat more forgiving of imperfection. As you say about the leaves, nature is imperfect, and the quilts you make have a much more organic look. I am going to see if I can get a copy of your book. I look forward to trying free form cutting and curves. Thanks for sharing. 😁
I always love to watch your videos! They are great inspirations and a good jumping off point for me.👍🏻💖👵🏻
Thanks so much. Y love 💕💕💕💕👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏 From Brasil / Porto Alegre/ RS
Thanks Karen for this tutorial and inspiring me to get creative! Free-form cutting is scary for me, but I will definitely give this technique a try! I just found you by accident and immediately became a fan and a subscriber!!
Great video, Karen. Thanks so much. I have had your book for quite a few years but never tried your technique. After watching you make the leaves, I'm quite excited now to try it on my own! Your quilts are stunning!

What size rotary cutter do you use? Is there a special cutter you buy? My blades seem to get dull quickly. Do you use a blade sharpener?
Thank you for these clear videos.
I use the medium size OLFA rotary cutter, which uses the 45mm blade. As long as you are careful they stay sharp for quite awhile. When they get dull, I simply replace the blade. I've never bothered with the blade sharpener.
@@karen.eckmeier thank you. That’s what I’m using. Appreciate you answering so quickly. 💕
Очень красиво!!!
Danke
Hallo Karen. Tolle Arbeit. Bekomme ich den Stoff bei Dir?
Thank you so much, It is great.
Whould you tell us how to join these blocks togather?
Thank you! The blocks can be squared and pieced "traditionally"...right sides together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance OR free-form topstitched with gentle curves, which is explained in detail in my book Wiggles & Waves.
Lovely
🙏🏻👍🏻🥰
おおきさは、そろわなくていいのよ。しぜんのなかにある、はっぱもいろいろだからね。まではおうことができた。
しかし、だいたんにきるなあ。なれてるからだろう。
Very pretty and thanks for the tutorial .
