There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

"I'm sure one of the Nazies was a cancer, they all kind of were."
Is far too good a joke for a throw away transition.
As a Cancer… 😂😂😂
I learned about that hitlers friend trying to stop him from killing himself thing from this episode and used it as the topic for a moral philosophy paper to explore how utilitarianism would view a situation like that. I got an A!
Robert, the series is The Thick Of It and its arguably the best political comedy ever made.
Peter Capaldi (Malcolm Tucker) was also the Thirteenth Doctor and I loved his curmudgeonly grumpy energy and wished he could have brought the swearing with him to the role. "Fuckity bye" is one of my favorite missives.
"well yes he's a serial killer and a serial rapist, yes, but he's VERY good at making lists"
Like Santa Claus. Except you don't want Lavrenty Beria coming down your chimney.
@@johnmckiernan2176 I would MUCH rather have that fucked up nightmare santa thing from Love, Death, And Robots coming down the chimney than Beria
@@SgtKaneGunlock I'd rather take my chances with Robot Santa Claus. At least the worst thing he'll do is kill you with X-Mas stuff
next year’s april fools episode should be about Big Boss from Metal Gear
“Why didnt i ever learn about Operation Snake Eater in school??”
"Big Bosses fascination and really the whole snake families fascination with box's began in 1963..."
I thought I was hallucinating when he finally said out Beria's name
As a civil engineer, I agree 100% with this podcast, with respect to architects.
Joe Kassabian is my favorite guest and I love Lions Led by Donkey. If you like funny podcasts, but think BtB is too "feel good and lighthearted" the Lions Led by Donkeys is for you. I recommend starting with the episodes on the Soviet Afghan war
I'll check that one out. Just finished their series on the russo-japanese war, hella interesting.
The Triple Alliance episodes and Taiping series were also good
LLBD: where it always gets worse and 80% of everyone dies of dysentery.
My "comfort" episode that I always go back to is the Emu War or the live rerecording of that time the Russian navy made the world's worst ark (full of snakes and syphilis) while taking the long way to fight the Japanese
Still laugh at the JDSU but in that series.
Taiping and the recent Boxer Rebellion, plus the episode about the Messerschmitt Komet, the rocket powered plane that melted a bunch of Nazis, and the USS Iowa turret explosion the navy blamed on The Gays (with bonus November Kelly) are my favorites but there's a lot of bangers.
Robert Evans and Joe Kassabian on the same podcast (again)? It must be my birthday! Now all I need is a Behind the Problems or Well There's Your Bastards crossover.
Absolutely this yes
Robert Moses
I really hope we get more episodes about the Soviet Union in general. It's hard to find sources who aren't either Reactionaries or cynical Marxists trying to exploit people's desires for a rebel chic and an informed opposition to the status quo.
To Robert, Sophie, or whoever runs this UA-cam channel, the man who could have killed Hitler during World War I was Private Henry Tandey
It should also be noted that according to his account, the date he listed was one where Hitler was in Germany and not France.
Hitler only ever recollects after being informed of a painting depicting Tandey, with the anecdote being told to Chamberlain.
I think it might be false. I think Tandey misidentified someone he may have seen at some point during the war, and Hitler took advantage to tell a charming anecdote to Chamberlain about how a merciful British soldiers did not kill him.
This episode reminds me of what some trotskyists like to call about false equivalents between the far left and the far right. It's very often that people don't recognize that their shiny new world is just another murderous dystopia.
People often don't seem to understand that things like:
- Revolutions, purges, layoffs and anything that creates permanent instability and turnover of people in hierarchies is the right kind of environment for sociopaths, psychopaths and opportunists.
- People that seek and maintain power through violence don't have any problems in killing a lot of people, and romanticizing the military or guerrillas can come at a high cost.
Ughh. Possibly THE bastard. Nah, silver medal. 1) Hitler 2) Beria and 3) history's greatest monster, Vince McMahon.
id say theres a few Nazis between Hitler And Beria...but not very many
Agreed, one of the most evil and disgusting people in history... But where is Stalin on the list?
The world is controlled by Big Alpo, so no surprises there.
@@dylanrodrigues Stalin is in joint 3rd place with Vince
Nobusuke Kishi is my Gold Medal Bastard
God that sounds terrible. He doesn't deserve gold anything
Yay Joe! Big LLBD fan.
I loved his very knowing 'oh nooo' when you said who the episode was about 😆
I guess now is finally the time for me to go down the dark road of learning about this terrible person, talley-ho!
This was a great episode
Oh by the Gods, they started Beria. Gonna be a long and very disturbing one.... I'll grab the popcorn
Just what I needed at 1AM
Better be a “hammer” heavy episode…still counting missed opportunities to reference Jamie Lofton when “hammers” are mentioned. So far, three episodes I’ve found!
The sad part is, i know you're not talking the legendary M.C. Hammer when you make this reference. 😂
"It's always the architects" hits a little close to home here on Long Island. Oh boy.
The series you’re thinking of is “The Thick of It”
Content warning: Malcolm Tucker
we're so fucking back
Ate 2 edibles time 2 fall asleep to this
I have to now retract 4.5% of everything I sad about Robert, while I take time to manage my lists.
Behind The Bastards... Always making me question the pronunciation of foreign countries and regions.
"It can't really sound like that... Can it? Have... Have I been wrong?"
Azerbaijan, right?
I think it's a Robert thing. Have you heard how he pronounces Missouri?
Dictatorship of the Proletariat does not mean a dictatorship by one guy
It is rare when Joe is one that is taking psych damage.
Oh hell yeah. Beria is one of the top Russian bastards. Which is saying a lot considering his competition is Stalin, and Vladimir “My endless lust for power set disastrous precedents and likely destroyed 20th century communism” Lenin.
Russia has unfortunately spent most of the 20th century being ruled by utter jackasses
I think the lenin bit should be more, i was so greedy for power i destroyed every hope for a better world for over 100 years and singlehandedly stopped anticapitalist movements from reaching mainstream relevance or something like that
@@PropheticShadeZ Imagine if Russia became democratic instead in the 1910s. I wish I could visit that timeline
yoooo joe episode lets gooooo
I felt that 'oh no' from Joe
This is karma for the pain he caused Tom in some LLbyD episodes.
Episodes with Joe Kassabian are always great!
Great episode 👍👍👍
New behind the bastatds episode after work? Im all in
If your skull guy takes an arm and a leg, you should start questioning his competency and the purity of his product.
He had lists on EVERYONE!
Yes, including those whom he pardoned massively.
Who would have thought the descendants of convicts would make bad hostel roommates? Remember, keep your wallet, passport and keys under your pillow. With a stingray. Stingrays and Ozbags are natural enemies in the wild.
Just joking, I like Aussies. Expert swearers. My favourite sleeveless nation.
Do you think Robert knows about the hockey team too?
This is gonna be good
Love you bunches Robert. Don't ever stop podcasting because they're is no one like you😂❤
The main difference between Stalin and Beria is that unlike Stalin, I can't imagine a timeline where Beria turns out OK. He comes off as just someone that was born evil
That's such a weird take.
Stalin, famously capable of redemption
@@dylanrodrigues Another self-admitted victim of the educational system and its correctional facilities
@@dylanrodrigues That's not what I mean. I mean that Stalin became an awful person because of his environment, while Beria would've become an awful person regardless of circumstance. Like in a good timeline where Russia became democratic and Georgia wasn't dunked on Beria would become Georgian Jack the Ripper because he's just evil since birth
What a lovely video to wake up to 😅
Ahhh, Robert Evans and Joe Kassabian also love "The Great"! 😊
Spent the first six years of my life on this mud ball we call earth, playing on a mass grave just outside of Dublin, Ireland. Don't knock 'em until you know 'em, I always say.
As an Armenian, so strange to see here an Armenian, that has a podcast, and had an interview with Armenian News channel
Love from a ViceRhino and Vaush fan!
WHERE IS EPISODE 2
I'm here from the redbeard episode...Finally another guest whos actually funny😂
Love that what Beriea down was like his moderate political policies like German reunification and you know, not all the rape?
Fun fact: Australia comes from the Latin word *Australis,* which translates to *✨️Southern✨️*
36:36 Soooo.... Dave Rubin? That's literally just Dave if you swap in Glen Beck for the new boss instead of Shapiro.
Now the real question: Is Dave Rubin the Beria of political grifters, or is Beria the Dave Rubin of post-revolution Russia?
Just wait...the new Fallout TV Series is dropping soon, and it's a guarantee Alex Jones claims it's "predictive programming for The Elite (TM) on those upcoming FEMA camps".
Whatever happened to Beck? Watched him for a bit then realized how shitty he was and never went back...
That comment so reminds me of a Firedoglake sponsor, "Nancy Reagan's Patchouli Gargle and Napa Valley Mustard plasters". 😕
"Stalin was the *good* cop"
Is the British show about UK politics "Yes Minister"?
The show is The Thick of It. Yes Minister is a good bit earlier.
@@malgault Yes Minister is a show that I don't think has a US analogue. The Thick Of It was watered down to become Veep.
The closest thing I can think of to Yes Minister is probably Servant of the People by Zelenskyy.
@@malgault I forgot about that show
"the Baku like to Baku"
the crew talking about Jordan peaterson reminds me about the time my very liberal (not leftist) black, from the hood with family who were part of the BPP, ex girlfreind was given an ayn rand book and she just had it not knowing who it she was reading.
Wait can you get oil from human remains?
"Nobody hates us like we hate ourselves" 😅
If you watch dance videos from anywhere in the Caucasus here on YT, the comments are full of people from everywhere else in the Caucasus accusing them of stealing their culture and saying it's just a poor copy of their own dance style.

Speaking of being kicked out of England for being too much of a Houligan - maybe do an episode on the crimes that got them sent to Australia...😢
One of my ancestors got sent here for stealing a single loaf of bread, but one of my other ancestors got sent here for killing a man in a bar fight. I truly don’t understand how they decided that they both deserved the same punishment 😅

Nope. Azzer-Bye-Jhan.

Definitely changes depending on who, but the "A lot of them are cashless nobility" thing is like... Not UNLIKE what I've experienced? The most hardcore leftists I know, at least, are people who can say "Well my family had money/has money, but..."
Access to strong education and ideological training, also personal insight into the worldviews and behavior of the upper class "behind the scenes"
56:19 Yeah -- as I recall, Peterson was substantially more reasonable during his early career. He's let himself get badly audience-captured over the last several years.
"More reasonable" is relative. I remember how he got internet famous...
He was better able to rein his wilder impulses in and appear reasonable and scholarly. Whatever he's been on since the whole meat debacle has not been kind to his psyche.
Rebuttal:
10:30 - What the actual F…
10:50 - Georgia invented wine, so I doubt it.
12:30 - "Blood brotherhood" or "milk kinship" is a beautiful Kavkaz tradition.
40:00 - What a Russophobic BS. That is what the Georgians (Sakhartvello) whine about; for three years they begged RUS to come to their aid, and then were all like “You helped but not the way we wanted”.
47:20 - I mean, it’s one thing for me for the first two years not to hear a mention it was a COMIC-BOOK.
59:45 - You should see his granddaughter…
"How dare they not appreciate our help" listen to yourself. You're the reason people don't like Russia.
@@TheGallantDrake Spoken like a true...
Also comic book doesn't mean it's less legitimate lmao get a hold of yourself.
@@TheGallantDrake Oh really, which comic books you prefer most as credible sources on subjects of universal matter?
I am disappointed to no end. I probably will not listen to the show. I have listened to many of your episodes (H.K. No1 was the best). Not anymore it seems.
Even my roommate, an anti-communist post-soviet Georgian, only says two things about Beria;
That he introduced the "telltale" culture*, and that he had a tunnel to a ballerina's house.
If you know Russian, I encourage you to consider *КУЛЬТПРОСВЕТ*' materials on the matter.
Your title alone is a rendition of the slimy lie that L.B. had the following;
A) A vat of acid (%100+, yes, literally) to dispose of bodies after they went through a brick-cutter.
B) A safe, full of girl panties, that he would stuff in after going hunting on the streets of Georgia with his limo, where mothers would hide away their young children.
All in all, this is a recycling of lies. If you'd believe his spouse or his meetings diary, you'd agree that he simply never had the time to do anything like that. Growing up poor as it can be, he only desired prosperity for his countrymen. Why cast a Columbus-like shadow on the phenomena that brought humanity to the last frontier?
*) just imagine what kind of culture this was, tribalism-based "people of honor" covering up for each other, now praising themselves for having "glass walls".
The opposite of how Germans came to be.
This. Complete standard western/nazi anti-communist propaganda. Dudes, do you inow what "fact checking" is? I'll be back in a while with debunking.
I mean, why not listen so that you can verify that this figure isn't slandered as you say?
I'm only nineteen minutes in and I've noted several times already where Robert makes a point to say "...after the death of Stalin, everybody wanted to blame Beria for excesses..." Or that "...novels are written in which Beria is the villain..." I'd say they're giving a fair amount of context in this regard.
He was one of the worst people that ever lived, mate. The only reason Beria isn't used as a substitute for the phrase "you're worse than Hitler" is because Hitler was worse than Beria by a small margin.
Got absolutely no idea why you're bag carrying for a guy so evil he forces superlatives in front of the word, but I'd reconsider your life choices.
