Ive found this film as we have a Rapido Double floor MH, and the fuel tank that came with the heater will not fit conveniently into any of the lockers and give easy access to fill, so need a "flatter" tank and the way you have fitted the fuel line is terrific . Thanks for sharing
do you even need to drill the hole in the bottom of the tank? can you drill the hole in the top of the tank and using a weighted tip to hold the line straight feed the line into the tank and 1 inch or 24 mm off the bottom of the tank? or can you get 2 seal washers one on the inside and one on the outside of the tank?
hey mel, just assembled one today. i used the tank in the pack but installed the nossle slightly differently. i drilled out the bore of the nossle not including the thread. once i had the nossle poking out the bottom i gripped it with my combi drill chuck then ran it and pulled at the same time. eventually it threaded itself into the plastic. so in a nutshell, screwed it into the tank from outside. I'm hoping that will mean 0 leaks. I'll keep you posted, I've not seen this method anywhere so i thought I'd share it with you. keep up the great videos!
Silly question time- Why not hang the chinese fuel tank on the diagonal, like a diamond, and put the "tube" through the fuel cap? If the fuel line is taken off, and the tube comes out when the cap is off, it won't interfere with "re-fueling"! The fuel line would be the only extra step!
Go for it if that’s how you want to do it I’m just showing you how I do it it’s your chicken your eggs that’s the great part of building your own camper you can do it how you want good luck 👍🤓👍
The novelty tank height could be aligned with the height of the wheel arch. That way you could extend the wheel arch top board, have a cuppa while sitting on it and conclude your blog. Good video, anyway, so I salute you, mate!
Thanks Mel, we were scratching our heads thinking how we would fit our tank, searched ebay and couldn't find one that fitted behind wheel arch, then saw your video and link, now ordered.
Hello Mel. I'm subscribed after taking Greg Virgoe's recommendation to look you up. I liked your enthusiasm and can-do approach. Looking forward to more.
Just a thought, maybe. Topic for future video. As the government are planning to phase out diesel vehicles by 2030, have you thought about running your diesel heater on biofuel? As far back as 1900 the French ran a Diesel engine on peanut oil (groundnut oil) and today you can get soya bean oil as an alternative to diesel. Be interesting to find out if it would work and what it's green credentials are?.. Food for thought.
Greg Virgoe good morning that’s a great idea I’m thinking about getting a workshop maybe could set one up and do all sorts of mad crazy experiments see what they will and will not run on 🍻
got the vented lid but the circle black rubber on the vent keeps falling apart, also am getting disel on the outside around the lid, more like an oil, had 2 from company now with same problem
@@BigVanSmallWorld i drill the cap big enough for the pipe to spin freely, and locate the pipe with a small length of rubber hose under the cap. Pipe stays put, cap spins freely, and tank is vented.
Great video but I would not put the fuel pickup all the way to the bottom as plastic tanks are prone to condensation which will collect at the bottom of the tank. if pump sucks in water it will seize.
This is brilliant and perfect solution , the Chinese tank is also a perfect grey water container. Thank you and congratulations on borrowing Greg’s subscribers everyone helps. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Good video, I am going to install this on a Webasto diesel heater for window cleaning, originally it’s hooked up to the vans diesel tank but wanted it on a separate tank, plus on red for a bit of saving. I was going to use the awful plastic tank you showed at the start but put me off wen u said about the possibility of diesel leakage from the bottom of the tank. I have purchased all the bits and ready to install it. The only extra thing I’d have is a fuel filter just after the tank, just so it’s not pulling any unwanted bits through.
@@DaveOTG after about a year the vent rubber dissolves into the Diesel just vanished into thin air that’s why I say don’t get vented lid how you vent it that’s down to you me I just made a very small hole in the centre of the lid
@@BigVanSmallWorld Thanks for the quik reply. That would be the same problem I have now, with diesel sloshing around when full on rough roads. My tank is inside as well and my wood shows signs of diesel everywhere, not to mention the smell
I realised after i had drilled my Chinese tank in the bottom, i could have just put a hole in the top and poked the pipe in, as the pump seems capable of sucking the fuel up. Cold have just used say a rubber grommet.
I just got a 8kw heater, (is there a difference between the 2,3,5 & 8 kw versions?) But I'm thinking about getting 3-4 more, and use them for heating my offgrid house, it's about the size of a large couple campers, a single unit will probably work most of the time, but who likes to take a shower when its 50°F ! So atleast another to heat the bathroom and kitchen area, and one for the bedroom, and living room, I'm thinking about mounting it in the basement, and running the exhaust outside, and in to a 1" conduit, going up above the roof! Maybe something larger if I get more, maybe I'll get a piece of 1-3/4"-2" exhaust tubing, and have a 90° bend on the top , to keep rain out, it should be enough for 2-3+ heaters, I probably would only use it 2-3 months a year. I would probably use a 20 gal, maybe a 40 gal drum for fuel, I'd like to fill it and forget it! All winter! I'm not sure how long 20 gal would last per heater on medium heat, but all I have is 5gal, and 20 gal drums, but I can get a 20 gal if needed, I alsl have a 400-500 gal oil tank, that's a bit over kill, I'd probably never need to refill, with 400 + gal of fuel, ha-ha.... But probably just try it with the tank it came with, or a 5gal,.... that's a clean install, nice!
Alright mel, I bought a stand pipe on your recommendation, I actually installed it just down from the fuel cap as it's the only place I could get my hand. I pre bent it and it fits perfect 👍

Do you mean the original tank or the new improved tank ? thanks for watching and your support really appreciated I’ll try getting a link for the pipe when I finish work 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel, I've watched this video a few times. Brilliant, thank you. Could this tank work in conjunction with an espar heater not attached to the actual fuel line of the vehicle.. instead it works solely off of the plastic holding tank you show in your video correct? Thank you for your response
@@BigVanSmallWorld I'd love to put a smaller wood burner in my camper but there just isn't a good place for it. I live in my fith wheel camper year round with my spouse and in the winter we were spending a lot of propane so I put in the diesel heater and its saved us a lot so far
Hi Mel, Top tip ..When cutting the copper pipe with the pipe cutter, don't cut all the way through, to avoid a burr on the inside of the pipe which would reduce the bore size.. just cut 3/4 of the way through the pipe and then just snap it off.👍🏻🚐🏴
Can't you connect standpipe to top of stock tank? Any advice for installed tank outside cabin? I've seen under hood options, but generally they require heater behind seats and I prefer toward mid-cabin. Comments or any other options? ps I'm having trouble finding a tank like yours in the US. Thanks!
Yes you can have stand pipe at the top of you can install it that way you don’t risk getting a leak from the bottom of the tank later on that’s why I made this video to try and help people to not make that mistake good luck with your project 👍
I took a look at your channel Mel after watching Greg's video, really glad I did great videos and very helpful I've spent all day Sunday watching your playlists also just subscribed.
Hi Mel, I know this is a bit of an old video now but I have a question I’m hoping to can answer. I see you no longer recommend using the vented lid on the upgraded fuel tank because it perishes. I’m just wondering how you manage the vacuum / venting issues with the unvented lid? Great videos by the way, so so helpful. Thanks for them and all your help. Tom

Hi Mel I just bought a diesel heater and I was thinking about possible install solutions. Having seen the dangers of a leak I'm thinking why don't I plumb the fuel line in from the top (drill a hole and seal with tec 7 or similar,) and have enough fuel line to reach the bottom and add a weight like a nut or drilled piece of lead to keep it down there. maybe add a plastic/rubber washer about the with of the tank near the weight to stop it knocking around....? I'm just too impatient to wait for a stand pipe...
@@BigVanSmallWorld thanks a million Mel. I love your idea of using an external air intake for the diesel air heater. I'm going to install some ducting through the bulkhead so the compartment where the heater is will be fed air from the cab. This way a slightly open window means fresh air gets brought in not stale air. Also might install a small extractor fan at the rear (I have no roof vent) to complete the process of fresh air circulation. Thanks for the positive attitude it's helping me through my build!
@@BigVanSmallWorld I plumbed the fuel line in through the top of the tank. Just melted a small hole with a soldering iron and then sealed the line in. Completely leak free! Take care out there...
Totally agree with your idea about making a hole in a tank of any kind below the level of the contents in this case diesel. Diesel tends to wick around supposedly sealed joints so as you say it’s a no brainer and it’s almost as if the replacement tank was designed to fit there. As a tip a smear of washing up liquid lubricates rubber pipes so may of helped, maybe a tip for others now that you have got yours fitted.
@@BigVanSmallWorld It's the extra cost of postage / Haulage , you would be surprised by just how many companies don't or hit you for extra £ 10 or £30 to cover it . Isolation has it's cost .

This is what I was thinking Ben 👍🏻 loads of great adhesives on the market now... I'm thinking glue the locknut on the outside and screw the standpipe in?
Hi Mel, just a thought, but can you not put the pick up tube through the lid itself in either tank? In the original tank it would only need a slight bend in to reach the bottom and no need for small hands lol. In the vented lid version just put it off set from the centre of the lid.😁
@@BigVanSmallWorld Hi Mel. Nice vid. again. I did this through the lid with my water tank. You just rotate the whole tank not the lid! Of course this needs you to be able to remove the tank. On the subject of red v Derv the savings aren't that significant when you look at the costs and how much these heaters use. The interior volume used up by a separate tank and the possible contamination by diesel kept inside the living space put me off internal tanks. But....I had a drinking straw ( as Eberspacher call it ) fitted to my van tank and it kept failing. The Eberspacher dealer ended up going old school... drilling a hole in my plastic tank and using rubber/fabric fuel line surrounding rigid pipe to reach the fuel. No issues after that. Happy travels everyone. John

Hi Mel, I've been using kerosene over the winter and got it at 72p a litre also a lot less smoke on start up and shut down, from what I've read about using kerosene the heater is a lot less likely to bung up if run for a long time on a low setting. Keep up the good work 👍

hey mel, just assembled one today. i used the tank in the pack but installed the nossle slightly differently. i drilled out the bore of the nossle not including the thread. once i had the nossle poking out the bottom i gripped it with my combi drill chuck then ran it and pulled at the same time. eventually it threaded itself into the plastic.
so in a nutshell, screwed it into the tank from outside. I'm hoping that will mean 0 leaks.
I'll keep you posted, I've not seen this method anywhere so i thought I'd share it with you. keep up the great videos!
Sounds really interesting good luck 👍😊👍
Hi Mel,
Just bought the tank. Came across you from Greg's channel. Really like your no nonsense approach and good advice.
Thanks alot buddy
Adam
Hi Adam thank you buddy that’s really nice of you I appreciate your encouragement and support 👍😊👍
Hi Mel I’m a new guy to all this. I got recommended by one man and his whippet. Really glad I came to have a look. Great videos
Good morning thank you that’s nice of Dave to send you hear he’s a top bloke 👍
Thanks Mel, we were scratching our heads thinking how we would fit our tank, searched ebay and couldn't find one that fitted behind wheel arch, then saw your video and link, now ordered.
Thank you I’m pleased my little video was helpful to you 👍😊👍🍻
Hello Mel. I'm subscribed after taking Greg Virgoe's recommendation to look you up. I liked your enthusiasm and can-do approach. Looking forward to more.
Steve McDonald Hi Steve thank you really do appreciate your support 🤓🤙
Drill a hole in the cap
push the pickup tube into cap.
Screw cap on and adjust pickup.
Good luck with that
thanks for the recommend on fuel tanks.. purchased a 30 liter tank with vented cap. will also fit with level and gauge. definitively UPGRADED ;)
You’re absolutely welcome that’s a great idea to fit a gauge 👍🤓👍
Just a thought, maybe. Topic for future video. As the government are planning to phase out diesel vehicles by 2030, have you thought about running your diesel heater on biofuel? As far back as 1900 the French ran a Diesel engine on peanut oil (groundnut oil) and today you can get soya bean oil as an alternative to diesel. Be interesting to find out if it would work and what it's green credentials are?.. Food for thought.
Greg Virgoe good morning that’s a great idea I’m thinking about getting a workshop maybe could set one up and do all sorts of mad crazy experiments see what they will and will not run on 🍻
@@BigVanSmallWorldWorld that's what I thought, they are only about a £100 :D could be interesting?
got the vented lid but the circle black rubber on the vent keeps falling apart, also am getting disel on the outside around the lid, more like an oil, had 2 from company now with same problem
Oh that’s disappointing I’ve not had any problems with mine hope you manage to get it sorted soon
just fit the feed line through the tank fill cap.
no hole drilled in tank.
Good luck with that when you go to unscrew the cap you will twist the pipe 😵💫
@@BigVanSmallWorld i drill the cap big enough for the pipe to spin freely, and locate the pipe with a small length of rubber hose under the cap.
Pipe stays put, cap spins freely, and tank is vented.
Great video but I would not put the fuel pickup all the way to the bottom as plastic tanks are prone to condensation which will collect at the bottom of the tank. if pump sucks in water it will seize.
Yes I know I did cut the pipe about 5 cm short of touching the bottom 🤓👍
This is brilliant and perfect solution , the Chinese tank is also a perfect grey water container. Thank you and congratulations on borrowing Greg’s subscribers everyone helps. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
In-the-van Peter thanks Peter 🤙🤓
Good video, I am going to install this on a Webasto diesel heater for window cleaning, originally it’s hooked up to the vans diesel tank but wanted it on a separate tank, plus on red for a bit of saving.
I was going to use the awful plastic tank you showed at the start but put me off wen u said about the possibility of diesel leakage from the bottom of the tank. I have purchased all the bits and ready to install it. The only extra thing I’d have is a fuel filter just after the tank, just so it’s not pulling any unwanted bits through.
Well done 👍
DO OR DON'T get a vent lid? IN the vid you say DO, in your description you say DON'T. Which is it? And if you don't how will the tank breathe?
Cold have just used say a rubber grommet.
fly bobbie oh dear never mind we live and learn good luck with it 🤙🤓
Put it through the lid
Wow sounds like an amazing project good luck with it
Alright mel, I bought a stand pipe on your recommendation, I actually installed it just down from the fuel cap as it's the only place I could get my hand. I pre bent it and it fits perfect 👍
Brilliant I’m pleased that someone found it useful thank you 🤓🤙🍻
Question can you go through the cap for stand pipe and just take it out that way ?
If you want to

Don't be fooled by this fake!
Great video mate,I was just about to fit one of those tanks, not now,I'll get one like yours, cheers.
You’re absolutely welcome
Howdy! 5 years later... anything you would do differently with your water tank to hold diesel for your heater? I am seriously considering your tank for my build. Thank you.
Yes don’t use the vent lids as the rubber perished on mine
These tanks look a great idea. Is it not easier to make it fit to the fuel tank and avoid diesel stink.
Yeah but I like to use cheap diesel for the heating
I could not find a video about how to use the other type of thank if you can make that will be great
Do you mean the original tank or the new improved tank ? thanks for watching and your support really appreciated I’ll try getting a link for the pipe when I finish work 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel, I've watched this video a few times. Brilliant, thank you. Could this tank work in conjunction with an espar heater not attached to the actual fuel line of the vehicle.. instead it works solely off of the plastic holding tank you show in your video correct?
Thank you for your response
Hay buddy I don’t see why it wouldn’t work 👍
The cats were an excellent ploy, you got a sub from me! Also the info was great, thanks
Thank you I really appreciate your encouragement and support 👍😊👍
Good idea mel nothing worse than the smell of diesel ,bit of bugger to get rid off, liking your attitude.
Thank you 🤓🤙
I haven't had any issues with the tank that came with my heater other then I wish that it held more then 10 liters.
Well done 👍 and yes seam to run out just when you need it the most I’m fitting a log burner in my next van as well as a diesel heater 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld I'd love to put a smaller wood burner in my camper but there just isn't a good place for it. I live in my fith wheel camper year round with my spouse and in the winter we were spending a lot of propane so I put in the diesel heater and its saved us a lot so far
Good video Mel
Thank you ☺️
Gotta love your videos.
And I've finally realised where I recognise your accent. You're Mickey Pearce from Only Fools and Horses !! 😉
😊
Hi Mel great idea. The cap is vented do you get a smell of diesel inside the living area?
The vented caps on these fall after about a year the rubber just falls apart
Hi Mel,
A plastic container can only hold up to 10 liters of fuel. 15 liters is above regulations. :(
Just fitted my heater and its working great. Your videos helped and saved me a lot of time, Big Thanks Mel 👍
Thank you buddy 👍
THANKS MEL YOUR REALY GETTING WARMED UP , THANK YOU AGAIN
Thank you and your welcome 🤙🤓
Hi Mel, Top tip ..When cutting the copper pipe with the pipe cutter, don't cut all the way through, to avoid a burr on the inside of the pipe which would reduce the bore size.. just cut 3/4 of the way through the pipe and then just snap it off.👍🏻🚐🏴
Mr Johnson great tip if you watch that’s exactly what I did but forgot to point it out 🤙🤓
@@BigVanSmallWorld 🧐ok
Can't you connect standpipe to top of stock tank? Any advice for installed tank outside cabin? I've seen under hood options, but generally they require heater behind seats and I prefer toward mid-cabin. Comments or any other options? ps I'm having trouble finding a tank like yours in the US. Thanks!
Yes you can have stand pipe at the top of you can install it that way you don’t risk getting a leak from the bottom of the tank later on that’s why I made this video to try and help people to not make that mistake good luck with your project 👍
I took a look at your channel Mel after watching Greg's video, really glad I did great videos and very helpful I've spent all day Sunday watching your playlists also just subscribed.
waddy78 Hi thank you so much for positive message and thanks for subscribing really helps 🤙🤓🍻
So glad I subscribe to your channel, love your videos and I didn’t know about the red diesel. Thanks mate and keep the awesome videos coming 👍
Thank you buddy that’s really kind of you to say 👍😊👍
Hi Mel, I know this is a bit of an old video now but I have a question I’m hoping to can answer. I see you no longer recommend using the vented lid on the upgraded fuel tank because it perishes. I’m just wondering how you manage the vacuum / venting issues with the unvented lid?
Great videos by the way, so so helpful. Thanks for them and all your help.
Tom
No problem at all
Great job on the Diesel tank now you can use red or green 👍🤣
That’s rite buddy my heating bill this winter was less than £40 and I’m in my van full time 👍☺️👍
In the summer when its really hot, wont the expanding diesel force fumes out in to the van?
Hi Mel have you got a link to the heater please ive seen a few but no sure whats good

That’s a great idea still Better than the way they want you to do it 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld thanks a million Mel.
You’re absolutely welcome 👍🤓👍
Oh good one what a great tip thank you 👍👍🤓
Absolutely loving this build. Once I have done my current project I doing a van always wanted to do one to further and learn some new skills
Thank you that is nice of you to say really appreciate your positive feedback and encouragement 👍🤓👍
Mel’s Van World no worries it’s been one thing I would love to do myself make a camper so this is really getting me fired up 👍
That’s good to know 👍🤓👍
How do you prevent the diesel fuel from freezing/gelling? I'm concerned.
Since this happens as high as 32F/0C.
Do you use additives?
I’ve never had a problem as the tank is inside my van 👍
Use a tread true hole to fuel cup
This guy is buzzing and seems hyper over the new fuel tank, Great video and channel.
Thank you buddy and I respond to my comments especially the positive ones so cheers 🍻 👍🤓👍
I guess you could fit the pipe to the cap of the original tank. But I notice the original tank isn't even vented.
And you will twist the pipe as you un screw and screw up the cap 👍🤓👍🍻
nice fuel tank Mel only problem is they don't post to Scottish Highlands , Guess it's just risk the leak but i mounted tank on the back door .
Andrew Peel oh no that’s a shame I wonder why not ?
@@BigVanSmallWorld It's the extra cost of postage / Haulage , you would be surprised by just how many companies don't or hit you for extra £ 10 or £30 to cover it . Isolation has it's cost .
£35 now .. gonna buy one today ..great channel..
where is the link for the tube for the tank ?
Hi Mel I've not read the comments so apologies if it's already been mentioned, couldn't you just drill a suitably sized hole in the original tank cap then feed the fuel pipe through the hole.
Mike 6978 hi ya you could do but the cap is a screwed on so the pipe will get twisted up 🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld Sorry my mistake perhaps do the same actually on the top of the tank, make the hole an interference/tight fit for the fuel pipe.
Hello, thanks for posting this video, could you post the link for the fuel tank? I can’t seem to find it.. thank you
Hi there’s a link in the description of this video for you thank you 👍
Hi Mel, Just bought my fuel tank, Please could you post a link to the standpipe? cheers. x
Links in the description 👍
Yeah, sorry I realised afterwards..lol x
Hi Mel just wondering if you can tell me please what do you have used to stick your solar panels to your roof I have a solar panel bracket that based on but they need to be security to the roof just wondering if you can help please I would be very grateful.thank you .
I’ve used this stuff for years just make sure your paint is good as it will Pall the paint away from your body work
Hay up Mel hows about useing the original tank run the pickup pipe from the top through a ruvnut fitted with some sealer what ya recon ? Bobs ya uncle fannys ya aunt !
You could try it if you have the tools to do it but not even I have a rivnut tool 👍
Ooo! One of those tools thats an ace up your sleave. Great little tools to have in any toolbox

Hi Mel. I guess you could use an epoxy resin (Glue/Araldite) to seal the standpipe in place. Just a thought. Keep up the good work and inspirational videos.
Ben Withers thanks Dude really appreciate your support 👍 don’t think I would trust any glue on the tanks 🤙🤓
This is what I was thinking Ben 👍🏻 loads of great adhesives on the market now... I'm thinking glue the locknut on the outside and screw the standpipe in?

Great to hear! 👍
Yeah the square tank set up is much better from the point of safety + forgot about using red diesel = Excellent Mel

vans coming tidy mel...going to fit heater under passenger seat as its a single same as drivers seat
Lee Davies cool that’s a great place to put them 🤙🤓
Hi Mel, just a thought, but can you not put the pick up tube through the lid itself in either tank?
In the original tank it would only need a slight bend in to reach the bottom and no need for small hands lol.
In the vented lid version just put it off set from the centre of the lid.😁
TRAVELBUG TV Hi great idea but how you going to unscrew the lid without twisting the pipe 🤙🤓
John
@@BigVanSmallWorld maybe use a quick release fitting on the pipe itself. Similar to the gas one you used in your first van but for fluid/fuel. Only a thought.
Ive just looked on ebay and there is a wide selection of quick release non-drip fuel connectors. Maybe an idea for the future.
I have a new youtube channel 'restore it build it fix it' I will do a mock up and let you lnow how it goes❤👍
Hi Mel, I've been using kerosene over the winter and got it at 72p a litre also a lot less smoke on start up and shut down, from what I've read about using kerosene the heater is a lot less likely to bung up if run for a long time on a low setting. Keep up the good work 👍
Pete Hudson Hi thanks for that I’m sure people will find that interesting 🤙🤓
So it is easier on the unit to run kerosene I've ran a 50/50 mix of used motor oil and heating oil worked great just be sure to filter the used motor oil...
Mel, i know this is an older video but im wondering if you have checked the black washers in these tanks. I bought one from your link last year, the main lid seal seems to be degrading, sort of breaking down into black gunge and the one in the event seems to be enlarged and deformed to the point of falling off the little nipple. Are yours doing the same ?
Interesting I’ll have to check
Hi Mel. Thanks for the great video. I've just brought a maxspeeding rods 5kw Diesel heater for the van I'm building. I'm going to upgrade the tank to the one you've got. Do I get the vented lid or have you found something better to let air into the tank. I see you've said not to get the vented lid in the comments as it fails over time. I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks Mel and keep up the good work.
Do not get the vented lid it does fall over time
Great video as ever
Great idea I think I am going to go this way when I buy my heater as last thing you want is diesel dripping over van floor. have you got a link for the tank please Mel

@@BigVanSmallWorld Thanks Mel just saved ready to order when I order my heater in the next few weeks. Solar panel first then heater.

Yes absolutely can use them there great I used one in my old VW could take it out in the summer to make more room 🤙🤓
