      @@chrisb5839 Chris B I bought it and as yet to fit as broke my leg and put me back 3months but it looks pretty sturdy but I did take a look at the tank supplied and if you buy the pickup pipe as shown in videos or similar I think you could do the same although it is much smaller tank. In the end I decided if the seal starts to leak I’ll just replace it.

      Greetings, I am very concerned about diesel fumes pervading the cabin. I can see where a vented lid with one way air flow would be good at keeping the fumes out of the van because the fuel removed as the heater is used must be replaced by air. Questions: 1) Is there a tank with a vented lid that does not fail? 2) Have you had any issue with diesel vapors? Thanks!

    That is a spot on job. 15L and all. Great idea.
    I installed my 10L using a tip from a Brit to install standing pipe from the top. I used a wrench with a cut out to turn nut. Hole must be accurate. Used better O-ring. I had help from a clever brother with about 100k in tools.
    Everything is installed right there all inside. Used real fuel line 5/16" OD. Replaced filter, wrapped up pump (a thump now)
    All right at my driver's minivan camper door. All protected. 2kw heater with bluetooth and real furnace setting now from Vevor.
    Mounted heater at driver's side back tub. (Seats gone).
    Everything right at eye sight.... no leaks. Open sliding door fill tank.

    Just thinking drill hole on top of original tank, put string through get it outside the filler then put nut on and tie a big knot (Use a long tail that runs out of tank making removal of string simple)..Then pull the string and when nut is around the whole put some strong glue like a super glue on it, pull up and hold it tight with something or do it upside down..Glue will stick the nut in place firm enough, remove string and hey presto screw stand pipe in...

    Hi Mel, just to let you know I have used the original diesel tank and one of the long pick up tubes you use. I slightly bent the tube and put the fuel line fitting through the neck of the filer hole. That way you can get to the nut on the back and also leave lots of room for filler hoses from Jerry cans etc

    I just used a copper minbore tube [5mm OD] which I had left after hydraulic breaks repair. I drilled a 5mm hole near the infill neck and just dropped the straight length of the tube down, leaving some distance from the bottom of the tank clear. Original, green plastic tubing fits over the copper tube if you heat it in hot water.
    That way it is easier to flush the tank and there's no weak point for leaks etc to happen.
    I must add that this is a heater for my cabin - no movement.

    • @markeh1971
      @markeh1971 Місяць тому +1

      Hi, it’s never good to pot a hole in the bottom of the tank and then try and seal it. Think about it.
      Much safer to do as you did and even better to bottom it out but notch the tube so the oil can get in above the bottom. This way you are decanting the oil and the heavy debris falls to the bottom and is not sucked into the filter.
      Take care M

    Hi Mel i have just fitted my heater and I used your recommended stand pipe,I cut a hole in the top of the Chinese tank slightly smaller and the stand pipe cut into it then I sealed it all round from the outside, I’ll get a captive nut tool later and press that into the top of the tank but it’s all fine with the Plumbers old faithful ...yes the silicone gun, I’m well impressed with the heater works a treat warms my van up in no time, I used the turret instead of the flat plate bolted down on a nice thick layer of fire retardant silicone, only issue is the red remote control was missing from the box but I can live with that,currently trying to get them to send me one,I’ll connect a gsm module so I can text the heater when away from the van to defrost it in the Winter

      Easy for me mate I’m a plumber/gas safe registered business so fitting one these is a walk in the park, the 5 inch turret is a breeze you connect the exhaust /air intake and connect the fuel line and bingo fit it in the hole sealing it with fire retardant silicone and it’s much easier, then you just carefully bend the exhaust to where you want it, same with air intake, I put mine outside tucked up into a convenient void well away from the exhaust

    i had a downpipe where the nut goes on from the top, but I had to bend and cut the metal pipe to be able to put it inside the tank and put the top nozzle out through the hole, so the pipe only reaches about 2/3 of the way down into the tank.

    do you even need to drill the hole in the bottom of the tank?
    can you drill the hole in the top of the tank and using a weighted tip to hold the line straight feed the line into the tank and 1 inch or 24 mm off the bottom of the tank?
    or can you get 2 seal washers one on the inside and one on the outside of the tank?

  • @kurfbigman7946
    @kurfbigman7946 4 роки тому +3

    hey mel, just assembled one today. i used the tank in the pack but installed the nossle slightly differently. i drilled out the bore of the nossle not including the thread. once i had the nossle poking out the bottom i gripped it with my combi drill chuck then ran it and pulled at the same time. eventually it threaded itself into the plastic.
    so in a nutshell, screwed it into the tank from outside. I'm hoping that will mean 0 leaks.
    I'll keep you posted, I've not seen this method anywhere so i thought I'd share it with you. keep up the great videos!

    Silly question time- Why not hang the chinese fuel tank on the diagonal, like a diamond, and put the "tube" through the fuel cap? If the fuel line is taken off, and the tube comes out when the cap is off, it won't interfere with "re-fueling"! The fuel line would be the only extra step!

    Just a thought, maybe. Topic for future video. As the government are planning to phase out diesel vehicles by 2030, have you thought about running your diesel heater on biofuel? As far back as 1900 the French ran a Diesel engine on peanut oil (groundnut oil) and today you can get soya bean oil as an alternative to diesel. Be interesting to find out if it would work and what it's green credentials are?.. Food for thought.

    I just got a 8kw heater, (is there a difference between the 2,3,5 & 8 kw versions?) But I'm thinking about getting 3-4 more, and use them for heating my offgrid house, it's about the size of a large couple campers, a single unit will probably work most of the time, but who likes to take a shower when its 50°F ! So atleast another to heat the bathroom and kitchen area, and one for the bedroom, and living room, I'm thinking about mounting it in the basement, and running the exhaust outside, and in to a 1" conduit, going up above the roof! Maybe something larger if I get more, maybe I'll get a piece of 1-3/4"-2" exhaust tubing, and have a 90° bend on the top , to keep rain out, it should be enough for 2-3+ heaters, I probably would only use it 2-3 months a year. I would probably use a 20 gal, maybe a 40 gal drum for fuel, I'd like to fill it and forget it! All winter! I'm not sure how long 20 gal would last per heater on medium heat, but all I have is 5gal, and 20 gal drums, but I can get a 20 gal if needed, I alsl have a 400-500 gal oil tank, that's a bit over kill, I'd probably never need to refill, with 400 + gal of fuel, ha-ha.... But probably just try it with the tank it came with, or a 5gal,.... that's a clean install, nice!

    Hi Mel, Top tip ..When cutting the copper pipe with the pipe cutter, don't cut all the way through, to avoid a burr on the inside of the pipe which would reduce the bore size.. just cut 3/4 of the way through the pipe and then just snap it off.👍🏻🚐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Hi Mel I just bought a diesel heater and I was thinking about possible install solutions. Having seen the dangers of a leak I'm thinking why don't I plumb the fuel line in from the top (drill a hole and seal with tec 7 or similar,) and have enough fuel line to reach the bottom and add a weight like a nut or drilled piece of lead to keep it down there. maybe add a plastic/rubber washer about the with of the tank near the weight to stop it knocking around....? I'm just too impatient to wait for a stand pipe...

      @@BigVanSmallWorld thanks a million Mel. I love your idea of using an external air intake for the diesel air heater. I'm going to install some ducting through the bulkhead so the compartment where the heater is will be fed air from the cab. This way a slightly open window means fresh air gets brought in not stale air. Also might install a small extractor fan at the rear (I have no roof vent) to complete the process of fresh air circulation. Thanks for the positive attitude it's helping me through my build!

    Totally agree with your idea about making a hole in a tank of any kind below the level of the contents in this case diesel. Diesel tends to wick around supposedly sealed joints so as you say it’s a no brainer and it’s almost as if the replacement tank was designed to fit there.
    As a tip a smear of washing up liquid lubricates rubber pipes so may of helped, maybe a tip for others now that you have got yours fitted.

      @@BigVanSmallWorld Hi Mel. Nice vid. again. I did this through the lid with my water tank. You just rotate the whole tank not the lid! Of course this needs you to be able to remove the tank. On the subject of red v Derv the savings aren't that significant when you look at the costs and how much these heaters use. The interior volume used up by a separate tank and the possible contamination by diesel kept inside the living space put me off internal tanks. But....I had a drinking straw ( as Eberspacher call it ) fitted to my van tank and it kept failing. The Eberspacher dealer ended up going old school... drilling a hole in my plastic tank and using rubber/fabric fuel line surrounding rigid pipe to reach the fuel. No issues after that. Happy travels everyone. John
