  • The last day of Cardiff's trolleybus system, a very cold wet day as befitted the occasion. From Jan 12 Cardiff streets would be served by diesel buses only

Fifty years ago today. Huge step backwards getting ride of trolleybuses and trams. Glad some cities in the UK are finally back with trams, but would be great to see some trolley networks up again.

I remember these, and the conductor sometimes having to get the big pole out to put the connection poles back on.
    The old Clarence Road bridge.

Brings back memories. I used to live in the flats above the fire station in Westcott St as my father was in the fire service. Also have a photo of the roof on fire at the fire station as a few lads were smoking in the roof area and when I see one of them he has never admitted to it but he still has a chikey smile on his face 🤣

That was fascinating. I grew up in Cardiff, but was born in 75, so missed the trolley buses.

Nice one. As a matter of interest, I noticed that the trolley bus at 1:45 carried the number 3 on the front ( a service that I used to catch from Albany Road) and number 9 on the back ( a service that I used to catch to school from City Road)-most confusing! Diesel buses were never as comfortable and quiet.

Oh those lovely olde days! 50 years ago it's a sad day for transport history! I wish to see those running again on our roads. Found the link of this great footage from: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51034523

Hi, I'm a member of the Cardiff & South Wales Trolleybus Project, we are restoring 2 Cardiff Trolleybuses, including 262, shown in this clip, its amazing how clear the footage is, we've been trying to find footage like this to show people what they looked like in service, do you know where we could find any more footage like this? we know of the film "No Trolleys to Tiger Bay" but the footage isnt as clear as this!

Have you tried the National Library of Wales which does hold film? Go to archives.library.wales

Peculiar that trolley buses were abandoned. They would be considered very green and modern fifty years later. They steered to some extent instead of being rail based like the trams that the Welsh government are so keen on now. I'm glad that I am old enough to have ridden on trolley buses. Great memories of an efficient, silent, exhaust free transportation system. Okay they were fed energy from a coal fired power supply but that is still better than the nuclear system the government wants that will be controlled by the Chinese.
